TBH a shocking absence of 2000AD talent from that list most noticeably the unparalleled sublime talents of chris blythe. Also greatly saddened to see a lack of the brilliant GNs.

If I may be so bold as to suggest the much under-read Comics Journal for a vote partially due to its long-standing services to 2000AD - its iconic issue 300 contained a marvelous 20page discussion between Gibbons and Quietly largely revolving around 2000AD, plus there was that rather lovely O'Neil cover of late featuring all his thrll=powered finest.

Many thanks for the linkage / preview. The first two vol. are available for low low prices on amazon atm and well worth it for any boarders who haven't yet. The (frankly not great) 'new' art in them was their only real downside so the preview really shows the bar being raised.

Any idea on a timeframe for the rest of them?

Your post suggests an either/or attitude towards Millar's venture and 2000AD, which seems an oddly hostile stance to take to a proposed publication that, to the extent that we currently understand it, will either fail horribly or expand the potential reader-base of British comics more radically than anything has done for a generation. Liking Millar's material is not a prerequisite for recognising this.

I say "Cheers" because this is an internet forum dedicated to sundry discussions by adult fans of a comic created thirty years ago for the entertainment of children and, thus, anything posted here is hardly worth getting as upset about as someone, say, poking you in the eye. If it, or, indeed, I bother you that much then I would invite you to deploy the "Ignore" function this forum so generously offers.

i think you should stop attributing to peoples posts readings they clearly can't sustain.

It seems standard in this forum to have an either / or attitude to the Meg and you'll not find one post from me saying anything other than 'its great, keep the faith, you can't like all the fish all the time'. In light of that an either / or attitude to 'CLINT' seems more than sustainable - but even then I dont say that. Millar - I've no interest in. Comics written by two 'celebrities' rather than say giving Al Ewing or any of the guys that have done decent future shocks an alternative forum - I've no interest in. And yet.. AND YET I say 'hope it gives some art talent an alternative forum to make a living AND good luck to all involved.

Whatevers got your goat isn't my problem.

A new British title launched into the mass market with all the noise that will accrue can only be a good thing for British comics, which are otherwise pretty much dead in the water.

Are you saying 'cheers' sardonically in keeping with the rudeness of your introduction or 'balls' joshingly depsite the format of it imperiously standing alone at the start of your reply?

Either way Millar work has never interested me and largely in genres and conventions  I've no liking for and little interest in. 2 stories written by him and one by Ross and one by Boyle aren't going to interest me in the slightest. Nevertheless Good luck to em and all involved and all those sending in submissions to them. Me? I'll keep on giving my change to the prog and meg and appreciate just how great those two long-standing forums for developing British talent really are.

The only upside is that perhaps amongst the Boyles and Rosses there will be work for a few british artists / writers / colourists etc.

Any update on what is happening these? Originally Vol.3 was March now the site says June...

Having seen 10 copies of Vol.1 sitting in Forbidden Planet untouched at 20 quid I can't see it having shifted much although the reduced prices of 1 & 2 on amazon made them much better value and not bad reads...

While i think he went on to be a rather good artist i don't think anyone can sustain that Raptur is good art - there are hints here and there but really its like McCarthy done with crayola. At times its shockingly flat, the anatomy is wonky, perspective and scale constantly off and the storytelling is non-existent. Its right up there in the Steve Sampson levels of 'not good'.  Its VERY sub-par Deadlines 'second swathe' art.

On the whole 2000AD has to support an artist developing and like I said he went on to be a good artist so that decision is justified - there are a few in the current crop who are in the same position (although they are on the whole much better if still 'learning') and its a bit unfair to bitch about em. Long as the professional editors think they will grow into a good professional and its not the bulk of the art on show then thats grand by me as a punter. Mind you dosn't mean you have to think reprinting Raptur was a good idea.

Didn't the original print have 'Monster design by Tony Luke' credited to it? (Venom meets Predator hardly took hours to come up with tho).

the Meg is great - sure its not 2000AD but is there anything comes close to it?

'Great art'?

Hummmmm.. is it safe to say something is bobbins 10 years after it was first printed on here? Cause its bobbins.

Unlike the LOVELY cover - much like PJ's use early in the year the spot colour on the B&W was brilliantly effective and evocative. Best Meg cover in ages. Best Dredd Cover in ages.

Brilliant Dredd comedy number too. Hurrah.

each week the BBC Radio5 program 'up all night' adds one book to its 'virtual bookshelf' - the format is people call in, nominate a single volume (be it the Collected Works of Shakespeare or a novella) and it must be printed version. No non-existant 'best of' etc. People then text or call in in support and the total votes at the end of that night gets the book on. After 10 weeks there is then the inverse in that the discussion is which of the last ten books to take off. Very often an obscure book can get on and stay on when it has someone giving it passionate support - eg 'brewers dictionary of phrase and fable.

Thereafter the books are read in a bookclub fashion and - importantly - the list is constantly repeated each week several times.

Now... strikes me we need to get something 2000AD on there...weekly publicity, on a BBC list and eventualy read and discussed on air..

I would suggest we discuss a candidate here (be it Prog 1, Casefiles 4, America, Dante, Halo Jones..) then all get behind voting for it in the early hours of one sunday.... any takers?

His chin reminds me of the awful early colby art from the 600 / 700s.  Definitely like the updated lawmaster even if the update itself is a bit post-akira 'new' rather than something totally radically new. Got to say not loving the cover tho the pose and composition are rather good.

actually looking at it more its more the face and badge i don't take to - the gun arm and body are really well done.

Defoe is barnstormingly bonkersly bloody brilliant. Another fine 2000AD match of story and art - Mills' excels in silly names and 'group' yarns with more invention irreverence and bravado per page than any other writer. He's at his best when he's at his most madcap and high-octane (see also Vampire Knight & ABC WARRIORS) and this is a particularly fine example. Add to that some unique art in a style few other journals would accommodate and you get another example of why 2000AD should be lauded as the best thing in comic.

The collection was my fave GN purchase of 2009 and roll on BK IV, V, VI, VII, VIII etc etc

funnily enough at the time of MEG v01 #01 i viewed Midnights / America and Kenny as ALL dredd strips and only Als Baby as obviously not (despite the famed intro page). To view them as not part of 'Dredd the strip' seems arbitrary and more a reflection of their subsequent success (hell I've America in about 4 formats now) rather than their positioning at the time. I'd warrant the Meg was even launched with some guff about '3 NEW DREDD STORIES!!!!!' In addition the Meg has subsequently had issues with 'more than one' dredd strip (as opposed to dredd world) as has the Prog (as recent as prog 2010) so again it seems a bit arbitrary...

anyway somewhat sad to see them not included - especially Kenny as one imagines the Cam collection isn't going to be in print forever.

Nevertheless all needs to be in the context that this whole project is tremendous and trebles all round for the droids concerned.
