Other Reviews / Re: MARS ATTACKS JUDGE DREDD #2
03 November, 2013, 03:44:31 AM
Down the Tubes have a variant Mars Attack cover on display, showing Stan Lee (the 'nuff said one) as a Judge.

(Well, he's meant to be a Judge but he's obviously a jimp, given his name badge has his Christian name rather than his surname, and he's got writing on his glove.)

I'm sure that's the placeholder cover that was used before the red one was finalised/revealed.  I remember seeing it on Amazon UK when I pre-ordered CF1, and also being disappointed when they changed it to the red design as I liked the black one better.  It reminded me a bit of the last two Black Flame Dredd novels.  They finally got their act together with a uniform cover design...and the series ended!

(I also preferred the placeholder cover for the SD Agency files 1 better than what we got.  They were the same, but the original had some faint enlarged panels as background.)

Looks like Prion are releasing a paperback version of their 2009 hardback:

Best of Judge Dredd: Classic strips from the galaxy's greatest judge

The Best of 2000 AD is Prion Books' latest sci-fi comic strip offering and will be a dream come true for an entire generation of manboys who grew up with one of the world's greatest ever crimesolvers. Judge Dredd is the future's most famous law enforcement officer bar none. He has graced the pages of the generation-defining cut sci-fi comic 2000 AD for over 30 years and now also features in his own Judge Dredd Megazine.

Prion Books, 288 pages, paperback, 13th March 2014

Er, manboys?  Is that a typo for fanboys, or something from Thailand I don't want to know about?  And I love the fact that Dredd "now also features" in his own Megazine, like it's only been running for a fortnight.

Also, at 288 pages, it's 16 pages shorter than the hardback version.  Does that mean Prion have decided some of their selections weren't the best after all?

Amazing! Although, not sure how you spotted that one in the first place! ;-)

It was the two Tharg heads, they're a dead giveaway.

I just spotted this last week, hunting through some old progs.  Mike Dorey obviously had some "Blake's 7" photos in his reference file, as demonstrated by "Psi-Testers" in prog 408:

He actually gave it five terms (not including any of the four that we know)

I'm trying to imagine what they could be.  'Slightly peeved'?

He looks like Jughead in a Halloween mask.

Have you seen the news about the "Afterlife with Archie" series that's coming up?  It starts off like 'The Moses Incident' but with Hotdog instead of the boy.

Is Red Bull not an illegal stimulant?

No, Red Bull is still legal in the Big Meg - it's everywhere in the Dredd vs Death game.

Mike Perkins did a fantastic job.

Not to mention his other achievement, forever immortalised in poetry.  You know, that time when he ate 80 gherkins and pickled his internal workin's.

What is the thing that looks like a g string stretched over Captain America's shield?

Probably Slaine's shield, and Joe Pineapple's G-string?  Devyln Waugh's G-string?

It's dead/unconscious Stogie I feel sorriest for!  :(

Yep.  What's the white thing snaking in on the left behind Shakara's weapon.  Is it Ace Garp's scarf? And is that the High Rock grounded in the background (also on the left) beyond Dante's flintlock?

I like that cover.  They seem to be standing on the helmets of the more popular strips.  I can see a Judge helmet, Helm, Johnny Alpha's pointy hat, Hammerstein?  It looks more like they are standing on the skulls of the vanquished, rather than on the shoulders of giants.

Looks like a rather impressive anthology of one-offs and and also-rans.  I'm seeing The Visible Man, The Amazing Maze Dumoir, Xtnct, Tribal Memories for definite, and is the guy in the foreground Greysuit?  Is the sword-wielding guy from Telguuth, and who is the dame with the machine gun?

That's Homer the Barbarian. The girl with the gun is from Family. Foreground man is the Universal Soldier.  You can't quite make out the young girl from Life Cycle, the robot from Colony Earth, or Superbean....

I hadn't noticed the Skizz helmet in the pile before now, nor the 'dead' Stogie on Helm.  And is that Dante's rifle at the back?
