>Mike's Time Twister...sorry Mike, can't take another A&E Ending.

I understand completely, WoD! For the past eight years I've been one of the judges of an international SF short story competition, and after a couple of years I was so completely sick of cliched stories about Hitler, Adam and Eve and time-travel that I lobbied to get a ban on such tales included in the rules (unfortunately I was overruled).

Earlier this year I was thinking about the competition and I began to wonder if it would be possible to combine a bunch of very over-used ideas into one story, just for the heck of it. Once I spotted the similarities between "Adam and Eve" and "Adolph and Eva" I just knew I had to write it before someone else did!

Thanks Byron!

But... Peter Pan? Do you, perhaps, mean Alice?

Help! / Re: dtp software?

Hi Tanky,

You could give Quark Express a go (like inDesign there's a free 30-day trial of the latest version), but I should warn you that it's not particularly user-friendly.

The simplest approach is to use your word-processor to compile and edit the text before importing it into Quark (or whatever DTP program you're using) for the type-setting phase.

Alternatively, you could just stick with the word-processor and print out the pages yourself.

Going to a "proper" printer is expensive, especially just for a single copy of the book. However, there are companies out there that specialise in binding single-volume books for college theses and the like.

Cheers,
Mike

Hmm... Good question, Tordelback!

The stories in the collection can (I hope) be enjoyed without having read the novels, but they will mean more to those who have knowledge of the New Heroes' universe.

The solution, of course, is to buy all three of the novels and the collection. That's about 240,000 words of superpowered goodness, enough to keep even the fastest reader entertained for a good few hours. Or if not entertained, then at least out of trouble.

Certainly! All copies will be signed and numbered: does your niece have a favourite number?

Good news, everyone!

1000 copies of my brand-new short-story collection - The New Heroes: Superhuman - have just arrived from the printer!

The book is now available for ordering from the official New Heroes website.

Please buy lots of copies; they make ideal Christmas presents for your loved ones.

Many thanks,
Mike
P.S. The image below is what 1000 copies of the book look like. Ah, self-publishing: the one thing everyone forgets to mention is how much bloody space the books take up!

I strongly recommend Swan Song by Robert R. McCammon. Haven't read it in a few years, but I was mightily impressed with it.

The only man who could voice Dredd in a CGI show is Toby Longworth. He did a brilliant job on the Big Finish CDs and the Dredd vs Death game.

I haven't watched a new episode of The Simpsons for years, but I might watch this one. If I remember.

Another screen grab: the Comic Book Guy tears the rival shop apart.

Off Topic / Re: Looking for website beta-teste...

I've installed Safari on the PC and discovered that, yes, the Back Button doesn't work on the bibliography. Damn!

However, my research on the web reveals that this is actually a problem with Safari and not with my site. Undamn!

There are dozens of forums that suggest complicated work-around solutions, but in almost every case the solutions are followed by a lengthy string of comments along the lines of "It didn't work for me."

I'll give a few of the possible solutions a try, but I'm not holding out any hope.

I've coming to the conclusion that Safari could be an acronym: "Stay Away From Apple's Rubbish Interface."

Thanks for the feedback, guys!

PJ: I've implemented your suggestion for Previous and Next years.

Tordelbach: I've tweaked the code so that clicking on a year will only search the date fields and not everything. However, the rest of the code remains the same, so entering "2000" in the search box will return everything with "2000" in it.

I've no idea why the back button isn't working on your systems: it's fine on mine! Are you using Macs by any chance?

I've also changed the "Mainpage" text to "Index" (which is what it should have been in the first place!).

All the changes are uploaded now: give it another bash!

Thanks again,
Mike
