Brilliant idea - and it gives me enough time to come up with something myself!

From what I gather, the reason so many of us are crap at remembering things is not that we have poor memories, it's that we don't really know how to memorise the stuff we need to remember.

You have to train yourself to memorise. You know how you meet someone new and they tell you their name and a minute later you can't remember it? That used to happen to me all the time, and it got so bad that I knew I had to do something about it.

So now I say their name back to them if the situation allows, or I picture them standing next to someone famous with the same first name. It takes a bit of getting used to, but it works.

It's not easy to do over the phone because you can't see what they look like, but then you employ a different trick: write down their name, the reason they're calling and the time and date.
