RIP Peter O'Donnell. :(

I always remember being shocked when I first read Modesty Blaise in the Evening Standard [now Pravda Standard] as a young nipper. 'She's kicking people's heads in and she's a girl!' I shouted angrily since mysogeny was a word I had yet to encounter.

All these years later I appreciate the great writing and Artists particularly Jim Holdaway who contributed to Peter O'Donnell's superspy. A newspaper comic strip classic.

Yep, keep on plugging away willthemightyW. Success really is 10% talent 90% sweat and graft. Practise does indeed make perfect, rehersal is everything.

Terrific stuff Cthulouis. The whale being sawn up on the 2nd page is particular inspired as is the graphic for the psychedelic whalesong. Yellow submarine meets Quentin Tarantino!

Perhaps a little more sympathy should be shown to our neighbours across the water.

Many people went bankrupt virtually overnight and there were apparently mass
demonstrations against the Banks etc but it was hardly reported outside the country.

I saw on Newsnight how the houses built are standing mostly empty with one women and her family being virtually marooned alone on an empty estate.

I think we've pretty much well had it enviroment wise

I disagree with that. To me, taking such a view could mean not being willing to do something about it and that's no good! Although at times I'm inclined to agree...

While the planet is very likely moving toward a new equilibrium that we're perhaps currently not best prepared for, there are remaining 'natural' areas that should and can be protected, not least to provide areas to study how natural systems respond. I'm not only talking about the usual poster boys like rainforests or Antarctica, but areas within the UK and the rest of Europe. Whether that will ultimately happen, I just don't know. I hope so.

The UK has some truly world class terrestrial, freshwater and marine habitats that I get the impression most people don't really know about. For a lot of people it's just not relevant, unfortunatley.

M.

I believe the lead levels in petrol was something that we reduced for the overall benefit of our health but it still was not really something that inconvenienced a lot of people. So there's some hope. We changed our behaviour when we realized the consequences were worse than the cure.

However asking people to reduce their water, fuel, consumer lifestyles to go with less than they feel that they should be entitled too is much more of a demand and the simple truth is that a lot people will ignore it or find a way round it.

Bit cynical about Human nature I admit but I really don't see any escape from this. When the Volcano erupted the general emphasis tended to be on the delay of air passengers and the effect it might have on the air carriers themselves with various quotes ranging from the £millions to a £billion or so of losses to the economy.

Not a lot of environmental awareness there I'm afraid.

The Black Atlantic, the first Mega Cities-it's all coming true!

I think we've pretty much well had it enviroment wise the Planet will do what it's been doing geologically for millenia and if we're in the way or there's too many of us -too bad. Geography is destiny as we found out with Icelandic volcanoe erupted but it's pollution is fairly minimal to the human species pumping out all sorts of muck into the atmosphere. The Planet is definatly warming and we know from the fossil record this is usually a pre curser to climatic change.

If we just happen to be adding to this climate change by drilling for oil, driving cars etc that inevitably leads to enviromental disaster than the dumb monkey that is mankind is more than willing to do so.

We are a selfish, territorial ape and unwilling to change our ways particularly when there's a personal sacrifice to be made, for a future that we will not personally see, and therefore feel we have no real obligation towards. :(
