1984 annual has loose pages for me, only the first couple but thats normally the best JD story, I guess I could replace it but the childhood memories would be dimished somehow.....

With typical grace and magnanimity, PJ is happy for me to share for which I am very grateful.

I don't know whether the Future Shocks of yore got any cover placement and I'm not sure if 3rillers have had any yet. But if they did they may look something like this. Or if not it is my version of a star scan or reinterpretation of work from a great narrative artist.

Great Image Hoagy.
If I remember rightly, the 3rillers have had two covers in the past, the first was for the giant robots story '15 minutes' and the second was for the more recent story of post financial crash London drawn by John Davis Hunt.

Looks like Odeon want to guarantee sales of at least 100 tickets so a Kickstarter campaign may be coming your way to show your support for this screening on Halloween (at least thats the latest news on the Facebook group)

Working on something for the comp. it hasnt been abandoned!

Martintds, its good to get a different subject matter, makes you have to think a bit more but should make everyone more creative!

Gents, feel free to go off at a tangent if thats the kind of conversation the Prog inspires!

Back to a review for me though....

Cover - a bit static and the colouring deadens it a bit as it was very yellowy fire colour but its a new character so at least its an intrguing image.

Dredd - Strangely unsatisfying and as BlackMocco pointed out, I agree its due to Boo Cooks art not suiting the tone of the story, far too colourful for the darker subject matter. I was rooting for Lenny to survive in a part of the Meg that looks like the Cursed Earth and the payoff felt a little cheap with the bully getting his come-uppance but carrying on living when he didnt really deserve to. Not my favourite Dredd story of the year.

Sinister Dexter - What does it say about a strip where the main characters are assassins but the most enjoyable episode (by far) of their recent adventures has been set at a bbq with not one gun in sight? A rare change of pace which surprised though Im sure there are errors with who knows about who in which universe. The quotes joke was as grating by page 4 as funts.

Aquila - Top class act from Leigh Gallagher, and when a story has a characters divining by reading collected excrement, you know you could only be reading 2000ad!

Brass Sun - yes, plodding along with not too much occuring, i second the comment made earlier that the art seems a little looser this book but the story will hopefully pick up and have our heroes leave the confines of the ship.

Black Shuck - Get to the story in a second but as in the past I have been a heavy critic of Steve Yeowell latest artwork, I feel the need to say that his work is so much better in this strip, more detailed and the backgrounds are back! Excellent colouring as well which really make me think Steve should stay away from black and white for a while, A tip of the hat to you Sir.
The story was straight into the action with a page or two of 'Hello i am.....and I do this....' hey its a new story and to be expected so looking forward to more next prog.

Going back to Dredd's absence, he didnt really star in Mandroid which was a pretty long story and only included him at the end when things started getting nuts. Its also a great example of the toughness of being a MC1 citizen and city block life.

I know what James means about the feeling of detachment from the characters and quest storylines of Aquila and Brass Sun, which only emphasises what a feat Mills and Davis pulled off with their tightly focused take on a similar format in Slaine: A Simple Killing.

Did we read the same story which took 12 weeks for him to cross a bridge and get defeated by someone insulting his dad? I wouldnt call that tightly focused, more like extremely decompressed to showcase the art of Simon Davis. Luckily the painting was so good it made me forget why Slaine was travelling around so slowly.

So we are talking about a JD story where Dredd does not feature at all or the absence of a JD strip from the prog? There are quite different animals as has been picked up on so far in the thread.

I've always been a fan of Dredd and especially MC-1 and can certainly vouch that when the craziness of MC-1 is bought to the fore, JD can easily be just a supporting character in his own strip. That said there has been something missing in some Tales of MegaCity One where it just doesnt gel and could be set in any future or 2000ad character city (with some exceptions of course).

A complete absence of JD in the prog would be unusual and as one of the strongest characters that 2000ad has in its arsenal, it would be a mistake to leave him out. The real test is to find a replacement in the JD world to take over as he has been aging for sooooooooome time now, would hate for the strip to do a 'Strontium Dogs' and just become a weak shadow of its former self. The scene was set quite well for Rico in the Cursed earth but nothing was ever explored to its full potential.

With regard to Wagner JD vs non-wagner JD, I enjoy stories by both as you cant have a hard hitting story every week, it would deaden the character and world too much and become big two-like (This week true believers, everything changes....again!) but saying that I have hated the way some stories have jarred post DoC with making MC-1 feel like nothing has happened. Is this the fault of the writers though? Its not as if they all conference call each other every week to get an update, it must be tough to catch up fast!

Aquila meets Black-Hawk... now that would be something  ;)

Think its been well discussed that Aquila is an updated BlackHawk for the 2010's. Now if they were to meet that would lead to a situation similar to when Rogue Trooper, Friday and Tor Cyan get together for a beer on fridays

The half hour format won out and listened yesterday evening. I wasnt expecting much from Collectors corner when I heard the description but foolish old me, I was surprised that it was an enjoyable new slot in the show! Another winning part of the interview with Carlos, his points about character creation were insightful and amusing.

Well done, will await Episode 3 (or C or III) eagerly!

And now off to enter the competition.....for the piece of KFC.

Listened to the first hour this morning, I was a bit dubious that your guest Dr Phil was a bit removed from the usual 2000ad creator but he brings more than enough comics knowledge and insight to the mix. He should have laughed more at your GET TO DA CHOPPA joke though when you were discussing Invasion!
Another great instalment.
