Seems to me that Albion has it about right, at the end of the day it's all about what's in the head.  Don't see how moving to another country helps at all.  If you're not sorted up top, all you're doing is taking your problems to another country.  Don't know what the answer is but maybe just sitting back and thinking about all the positive things in your life may help.

I had to give up a sucessful business some years ago through ill health, was told initially that I probably had motor neurone disease but subsequently was informed that although I had a serious condition it was not MND and I probably would be around to see my lad graduate!!  I was, indeed, still around to see him graduate and to see him do very well in a career that he loves.

Also, now have a 20 month old grandson whom I absolutely adore and life is sweet.  Don't care that I no longer have a business; don't care that I no longer have a flash car; don't care that I no longer go on cruises; and don't care that I no longer have the posh house.  In fact, I get embarrassed now to think I once thought that material things were important.  Like the old saying goes, "the best things in life are free."  Off to see the little lad on Wednesday and to take him a new "Digger" and me and the missus couldn't be happier.

General / Re: COVER OF THE YEAR 2010 - THE RESULTS!
10 January, 2011, 12:26:21 PM
Being an retarded old git with too much time on my hands, I actually kept a score sheet and, based purely on the Cover of the Year thread, and not knowing if marks were awarded through any other thread/website, I'm not sure you got the score right, Pete!  I'm sure you're right and I'm wrong but thought I'd just mention it.
Cheers,

Not normally, Mikey, but as you have initiated this conversation I'm quite happy to join in.  Have you, by any chance, got long hair, me old fruit?!!  ;)

Who's the nutter?  The person trying to initiate a face-to-face discussion with a real live person or the person "chuntering" on about it in to cyber space?!!  ;)

Really enjoyed 666; good, old fashioned comic story.

Hi Shark, I totally take your point regarding peoples' savings, I was being slightly frivolous there but, as any household knows, taking on debt to pay debt is the road to hell. I simply don't see how Ireland can get out of this.  I predict that within the next five years they will either restructure their debt or default.  Why not do it now and get it out the way?  Nothing bad will become of the Irish people as the political decision was taken many years ago that the European super state and the EU currency will never be allowed to fail.  The Germans will just have to keep on putting their hand in their pocket to support countries like Ireland, Portugal, Spain etc. etc.  Oh! and the UK, as we're almost in as much c**p as the Irish!!

I know you're the expert on this, Shark, and I'm sure what you're saying is correct but I think I might have an even simpler solution.  Why don't the Irish borrow as much as they possibly can, from any governments/banks and any other mugs out there who're prepared to lend them money and then just default?  It's been done many times before.  Argentina defaulted in the early '90s and the last time I looked on a map Argentina was still there!  It doesn't seem to have fallen into a black hole and the population doesn't appear to be starving!  Problem solved for the Irish.

There'll be a bit of whining for a few months by the governments/banks who've been striped up, but it will soon be forgotten and the merry-go-round will just start again.

I recommend these two books if you like a bit of history but from a slightly different perspective:-

Rifles - Six Years with Wellington's Legendary Sharpshooters by Mark Urban (Published by Faber & Faber)

and

The English Rebel - One Thousand Years of Troublemaking, from the Normans to the Nineties by David Horspool (Published by Penguin - Viking)

Wow!!  12,000 signatures, out of an adult population of some 40-odd million, that's marvellous!!  The populace are obviously enthralled by this campaign!!  And, yes, I am a Times reader.
