I think it is worth remembering that Star Wars was a visual feast  on scant bones.  It is brain candy of the highest order.  The problem they have now is that after nearly forty years it is becoming a bit more apparent.  I don't think many of us went to see TAF expecting to be blown away and personally I don't expect it with this.  It looks enjoyable and that is really about it if we are completely honest.

Have to agree with eamonn here.  Much better prog than of late.  Only gripe is that Carroll ends with a tease that we've had a few too many times before now.

Couple of chuckles in Survival Geeks.  Soylent Green ...  And again I have to agree that this was a better Future Shock than some of the others we've had of late.  You know sort of what the denouement is going to be but it still manages a bit of a surprise.

And all this on a Saturday too!  Tidy.

Now, back to the marking!

What about crowd funding?  Certainly there is a lot of support here.  What is the worst that could happen?

So anyone realise Canary Wharf tube station...?

Didn't quite get this at first but having seen a few more articles ....  Canary Wharf as a stand in for the Death Star?  Chortle!

When they first talked about the expanded universe in film I was concerned.  Over the years quality has been diluted with quantity way too often.  That said, this trailer speaks to quite high levels of production detail.  This looks like it may well go some way to block out the bitter memory of the prequels.

Books & Comics / Re: Whats everyone reading?

I've always recommended Mort and Reaper-Man as some of the better places to start on the Discworld series rather than The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic.  The first two books are enjoyable but show Pratchett still trying to find his voice properly.  They feel a bit like he is still trying to hard.  Mort is the first to really showcase his strengths to my way of thinking.

Having now worked through Men at Arms, Jingo and the Fifth Elephant I'm now on to Thud.  It is interesting to see how the whole cast has evolved over the course of the books on some levels.  The humour has become more subtle and the social analysis more complex.  Jingo was probably the best for the humour, especially Vetinari's take on the old Jingo song:  "We have no ships. We have no men. We have no money, too".

Thud is probably the best book for a critique of some of the complexities of extremist thinking.  The Deep Downers cast as a comparison for, I'm guessing, Extremist Preachers of all stripes.  Along with The Fifth Elephant, Pratchett found the perfect scenario for examining ethnic tension in the Dwarfs and the Trolls.

I did think about including Monstrous Regiment since Vimes appears but since it is only as a supporting character near the end it got passed over for now.

Prog / Re: Prog 1975 - top cop for the chop?

I'm with Colin on this week's prog.  Dredd is definitely the highlight although it is shaping up to be another one that may well read better at the end.  This week does feel like a filler.

The rest?  Well I accept that there are seasons when the prog is a bit 'meh' to me.  It is to be expected with an anthology that caters for a wide range of tastes.  Nothing hideous, just ... hey ho.  Sorry.

I was pulling my hair out last week as I woke up and my glasses were not by the bed - after turning the house upside down and not finding them,  I eventually assumed I must've taken them off in the taxi home from the pub

Had a similar experience a looooong time ago.  Night out at the NAAFI with too little food and too much vodka.  Woke up next morning sick as a parrot and blind as a bat.  One of the MT drivers carried me home and took my glasses with him.  Unfortunately I didn't know which block he lived in so spent the whole day wandering around in a literal blur until he turned up and gave them back.  Worst hangover ever!  Them were the days.

One of my guilty pleasures is X-men.  I guess largely because it was one of the earlier titles I started reading back in the eighties when I started moving beyond the tooth.  The John Romita Jr artwork and the mutant massacre storyline were my earliest experiences and I have to say, probably the best.  Recently I've found myself struggling to figure out what the hell is going on.  The death of Cyclops?  Oh yeah,  a few panels in Secret Wars.  Terrigan Mists and the potential extermination of mutants (again!)?  Nope, not a clue where that came from.  I'm all for trying complex storytelling but at least make sure key major events are part of the core story, not a vague and oblique reference in some obscure comic that no one else has read.
