I liked Damnation Station a lot, despite not caring about it in the slightest for the past two weeks. It was a nice one-shot amid the rest of what's going on, with some decent emotional clout.

Have to wonder why they didn't lead off with this one.  Would have made a nice opener with the potential for flashbacks to explain the drug issue.  Still, as Colin points out, two progs on from 1850 we really are seeing a lot of the potential from that prog being realised.

Dredd is really building up nicely and I hope this one runs for a while.  personally I've always felt that the undercity was one of the great underdeveloped opportunities of MC1.  Hope Carroll doesn't wrap it up too quickly, especially not with everything that he has thrown in now!

Flesh was definitely the most aptly named 'strip' of the week.

Prog / Prog 1851 The Red Road
21 September, 2013, 11:04:10 AM
After last week's rather disappointing jump on, this week's takes a tick up for my money.  Good strong cover from Goddard and Caldwell.  Dredd ticking over nicely but with Carrol's usual propensity for using Dredd as a back up character rather than lead.  Art work suits it and for my money it is showing promise.

Brass Sun is heavy on the action this week with a nice if not entirely unpredictable twist.  Flesh, considering that it is always one of my least favourite tooth strips makes for a not entirely unpleasant read so that is something.

Goddard taking over lead art duties on Aquila makes for a nice transition.  Couple of chuckles at the anti Christian rant.  Trying to work out if Rennie is being historically accurate or deliberately provocative.  The irony being that if the intent was the latter he may well discover that it is actually the former.  Nice little set up and recap of previous events.  Why didn't they use this last week?  Would have made for a much stronger jump on.

Damnation Station is a minor improvement on last week but Harrison's artwork does not seem to maintain consistency.  The computer generated backgrounds occasionally clash against the cartoony style of the line art.

So overall a bit of a surprise that the post jump on prof shows tooth's potential far more.  I know this topic has been heavily  covered elsewhere so will leave it at that.

Any chance of a synopsis of what went before in Damnation Station, Flesh and Brass sun? Just for new readers at least. The paragraph in the nerve centre isn't enough.

I think that was part of the problem for me as well.  Reading through it felt like a slog as I was sat there thinking "I should remember what happened" but I don't.  A quick web trawl put the first run at about 1690 and I cannot remember a blessed thing about it which does not bode well.

For me the big problem with this prog was that as a potential 'jump on' prog it seemed imbalanced toward continuity heavy stories.  Brass Sun and Flesh worked better for me personally as they had not long finished their last run and both benefitted from being stories that have an emotional resonance (love Brass Sun, can't stand Flesh!) meaning that recall of relevant events from previous runs helped the story make sense.  Dredd really was for my money the most 'welcoming' series insofar as the use of the journal for exposition helped establish the basis of the story.  It really was a good attempt at grounding the story for my money.

I know that the Meg has it's own review thread but I do think it is worth contrasting the two.  Much stronger Dredd's and Flint's art ....   Ordinary could have been a good one for the prog as a jump on strip.  Insurrection ... Maybe that's the problem, a first rate meg can really make a 'mediocre' prog stand out.  That said, for the prof, 'mediocre' is head and shoulders above a lot of what the competition put out on their best day.  I guess the problem with being spoilt for as long as we have with 'wow', we are becoming more demanding.

...  the message which was posted up on fb not so long ago; "Hi everyone, just to give you a heads up - we've had notice from our distributors that, due to problems beyond their control, Prog 1849 was a day late arriving in the warehouse and so it is unlikely that subscribers will receive their copies today. Apologies for this."

Which is ironic because my weekly Saturday Prog has, for the last four weeks, been arriving on a Monday except last weeks which arrived on a Tuesday  >:( Perhaps I am being rewarded for my patience.

Same here, another weekend without the leisurely digesting of the prog.  ah well, stick with the prog slog in the meantime.

Wish they would use other options as well to advise subscribers. Personally do not touch facebook with a bargepole due to the insane amount of hassle it has generated on the work front over the last few years due to its popularity as the weapon of choice for cyberbullying.  Why they can't simply email subscribers to advise them of any delays that they might be aware of is a mystery since we get the monthly advisory email that they have taken the latest payment.   ... Ah, just found the comment prominently hidden on the homepage!  Talk about small print!

have a sneaky feeling from their touting the 'coffee table' format that the price is going to stay the same.  Have to be honest, starting to waver on this.  Think I just skimmed through the last one and still haven't read it properly.  Not a good sign.  Not a patch on Dez Skinn's old tome (can't for the life of me remember the title!) :-[

If you find yerself in this position again please shout!  Got a whole stack from the past few years I'm happy to shift on for p&p since they are duplicating stuff I already have.

Interesting looking at the stuff you have on ebay there.  Would be curious to see how many of those actually shift at the prices you are asking for them.  Hope they do go but do think you are being a little ambitious (although not so much with the poster prog).

Some very tasty art there, Dale - especially the Steve Dillon Pressbutton / Laser Eraser stuff.

That is some real prime Dillon. Dont think i ever caught more than a couple of those stories - wasnt they reprinted in Warrior?
Any of these going to be up for grabs, Dale?

I thought that Warrior was the original and they were reprinted from Warrior but am willing to be corrected.  Cracking stuff at the time along with so much else in those pages.  His more recent Marvel stuff feels decidedly inferior compared to his 80's work ( Alone in a Crowd is my all time favourite Dredd standalone and would definitely be a grail piece for me).

Books & Comics / Re: Whats everyone reading?

decided to take advantage of a deal on the Ellis Stormwatch reprints.  Having enjoyed the early issues of Authority (although not as much as Planetary or the Monarchy) but sometimes puzzled by references to aspects of Stormwatch it was an interesting read.  Pulled out the old Authority issues off the back of it.  Definitely an uplift compared to the Stormwatch stuff.  Felt like Ellis came into his own there, not to mention Hitch.  Had to laugh with the creator bio which emphasised Hitch's marvel UK credentials but missed his tooth work.  Remember him doing a few bits around prog 500 that always made me think of him as an Alan Davies lite.  Man he's changed!

Picking through DC's Wasteland from the late 80's.  Nice brand of bizarre with some cracking Lloyd artwork.

On the non graphic front working on Stross' Neptune's Brood.  Strange how this one is taking so much more time to get into, not sure why.  In the same vein as Saturn's Children - post human universe et al.  Normally his stuff is more immersive but this is taking time to get into properly.  Weird.

I think my postman has delivered my prog to anouther house any serjestions.

Have you tried asking at number 72?

?????????? I think im missing a joke here

I just picked a random number that could conceivably be a house on your street and suggested you ask if they received your prog by mistake. You asked for suggestions and, as the sensible answer had been provided, that was the best I could come up with while on a break at work.

Ah!  The old random suggestion option, an old classic.  Just don't mention cheese!

Sounds like a dealer from the prices on offer, normally they would look to pay about 1/3 of the true value.  The £250 sounds like someone trying to see how knowledgeable you are.  The £500 doesn't sound completely unreasonable considering that complete collections appear for £2000 roughly on ebay on a regular basis but I would say still on the soft side.  The issue is the 'pretty much complete' bit.

The big question is how much effort do you want to put into shifting them. Shifting them as a whole could be easier but you may have to take a hit on their worth.  Splitting into chunks might net you more cash but leave you with chunks that are hard to shift.  The poster progs are highly sought after as they don't appear very often but there are loads of the annuals out there so you might find them hard to shift.  The same goes with the megs and the progs.  Some of the earlier megs can sometimes be harder to offload as they are more commonly available.  The progs can be harder to shift once you get past the 300's at times but might go nicely in yearly batches.

Nope, the Zenith disappearing act was due to the shop crashing periodically. With the Nemesis book, we had to put a hold on the last 60 due to issues with the printing, but that's all sorted now so they're up for grabs.

Whatever the reason, I'm with Strontium71 on that one ... it's an ill wind and all that!  Looking forward to it.

Like I say, bit of a conundrum.  Does it go to a board member for a fair price or does a board member get a fair price for it.  ::)

I've just been to the shop to pre-order the Termight edition , and it's not showing up - have they all been allocated?
There were only 200 so I'd assume so.

Nice to hear its, possibly, sold out - for Rebellion. Not so good for folks that was hoping to snag a copy of this Ltd Ed.
Almost keep forgetting ive got a copy paid for. September is still a long ways of yet.

This week's news email has it at the last 60 copies.  Been umming and awing for a while but finally took the plunge.  Gone through okay but didn't the same thing happen with the Zenith?  Disappeared then reappeared?  Bit of a sneaky marketing strategy going on?
