I met the fucking Emperor yo!

And had a hawt date with Bolt 01, many hugs with Richmond and Vicky, and Rich and Iz. Finally met the Molcher, looked at Matt Timsons, Andi Ewington and John Higgins and Dave Gibbons crotches AGAINST MY WILL. Didn't get enough time with Liz and Conor, I may have got a Dunk sketch but no one knows for sure, anyway Dunk's daddy kept a close eye on him all day making sure he behaved properly so it may turn up yet! I cooed over the youth and prettiness of Crazyfoxmachine. I got Johnny sketches from D'Isreali, Nick Dyer, Kevin Levell (who buggered off far too quickly) and the lovely Bolt man also Ian Culbard who is a gent and no mistake.

I did a panel, I drank a lot of gin, I learned that Rob Williams has the cold dead eyes of a serial killer (alledgedly) and got to see the fabulous Mike and Leonie Carroll and super fab Sally Hurst. What else did I do? Too much to bore you with and sorry I didn't get to see more boarders. Good con, loved every second.

All righty, folks... It's 04:04 in the morning (the time at which I normally go to bed) and Leonia and I are now up, awake, packed and ready, and very soon will depart on a Grand Epic Journey that promises to treat us to Thrills, Excitement, Unknown Wonders and Exotic Strangers!

And after we get to the airport, we're going to Bristol!

Admittedly it's been a while since I read it, but I remember thinking America was a great read because of how different Dredd and his world seemed compared to everything else I read before.  Yeah, we all know Dredd's a hard bastard, but in this one, seeing him from the point of view of Beeny, made him a completely unlikable monster.  Sure, he came off like a fascist, but that was the point.  We were seeing Dredd from the point of view of someone who's afraid of him.  And I think Beeny being a wimp was the point, too. He was the average guy who just wanted to stay out of trouble who saw the woman he loved completely ideologically opposed to what he feared the most.  He needed to be a wimp so that his point of view wouldn't overpower the two characters we were seeing through his eyes.

I wasn't as big a fan of the second America story, though. To me it felt like a sequel for the sake of being a sequel, and that Bennett Beeny came off very creepy.  I do like that we got Judge Beeny out of it, though, as she's a character I've grown to like quite a bit.  I'm glad they didn't completely forget about her after this story came out.

I could've written this post as it's exactly how I feel about the story. And Colin describes how I feel about Beeny in the first installment very well too. But the second, I was so disturbed by him, so, so creepy and wrong.  I think America is important, it's seeing Dredd through other eyes in a non comedic role. Had that happened before, without the sort of "first person" view of him we usually get he's scary and cold, and knowing that and seeing it are different animals.

I am also a fan of Judge Beeny, I like the continuity - that the powers that be haven't forgotten her parentage and don't entirely trust her but Dredd does. I like that whole storyline alot.

Help! / Re: Ant Wars!
03 May, 2011, 05:49:43 PM
luckily the living room is laminate so have put some powder and a couple of the little traps down and lifted the carpet and sprinkled stuff underneath as I think that's where the little blighters are coming from.  I feel all crawly, its horrid.  Hope yours are all gone now Mr Wells.
