Quite a serendipitious post, VampiraJen, given that at the same time, more or less, I started my 'dreams' thread.

I would have mentioned both Luther Arkwright (with the first one having edge) but I thought we were just naming our best.  And, unfortunately for Talbot, I also own From Hell.

Difficult - but I'd have to say From Hell. Unoriginal, I know.

I thought, and this is going to sound heretical, that strips like Moon Runners, these slower, 'gentler' strips, were trying to play the same game as Halo Jones.  Only they did it in the way that I play the same sport as Jason Robinson.

He cannot, perversely, by virtue of His omnipotence.  He made man, He made the world, so He determines our character/desires/will.  You would have to argue that in the acts of creation He affected studious indifference to the constitution of the resultant objects, to keep things 'fun'.  But that verges on calling God not all-good, or reckless even.

But this is, in effect, an argument against free-will in general (as our body and our environment do not lie within the realms of choice, neither does anything subsequent).  But this need not affect secular ethics in any radical way, except in the role of punishment for punishment's sake.  And it is here where it is of special importance for Christianity, as those who make bad 'choices', including what to believe (but we cannot, even in a radical free-willer's universe, choose what to believe), a damned (for eternity).

The Jehova's Witnesses get round aspects of this problem by denying the existence of Hell - they regard an eternity in Hell a bit harsh for 70 so years of badness.

Of course, certain Protestant sects, such as the Calvinists, deny free-will on the grounds of God's omnipotence and omniscience.  But they still damn the bad to Hell.

'you've all got free-will'

I would say that an omnipotent God precludes this.

But - and I'm not just trying to be an arse here - what sacrifice?  If you are a Christian, then Jesus was God as man, eternal and omnipotent.  The damage dished out to him by a few provincial Romans was surely an insignificant sacrifice for such a being?

'Chick, 79,...  became a Christian in 1948 while honeymooning in Canada' - presumably after he'd got all his premarital sex out of the way.

But it would stop Jack Chick having the money.

When I was first pointed in the direction of his comics I thought it was a joke, a parody.  Every strip ends with a guy kneeling on the floor begging fogiveness from a nasty, vengeful and egotistical God.  Then you can fill in a tick box form to make sure that the last panel of damnation will not be your fate.
