Prog / Re: Prog 1652 - Born to be Wild!

Ok, I'm converted. All my reservations about a new art team on Dante have gone.

Is this the first time 2000ad has had five strips and no stinkers?

I thought we'd all agreed that was non-canon and never happened. A satellite full of biochips from across the galaxy? Honestly.  ::)

Seriously, welcome back guys. I'm glad you aren't gone for good.

Quote from: Dark Jimbo on 07 September, 2009, 11:53:28 PMJust a minor thing, one story has a couple of pages printed in the wrong order. It was originally misprinted in the prog, and the reprint replicates that mistake.

Ok. I can live with that. Thanks Jimbo.

None, I believe it was a gift too subscribers.

It was indeed. A couple of years ago when I couldn't afford to subscribe for a year up front and 2000ad's archaic payment system wouldn't accept my minority debit card. I was gutted.

Is it for sale, perchance?  ::)

This news about the misprint is a bummer.  I hope they step up with a corrected edition ASAP, but then again, we're still waiting for a corrected Devlin Waugh vol. 2.

And now, unfortunately, Case Files 13...

Oh, what's wrong with it? I was about to order 11 - 13...

General / Re: Do you remember your first time

874 with the Rogue Trooper poster.

I was 14, so a relatively late starter. At the time my bus fare to and from school was 15p each way. By walking home each afternoon I had 75p for a new prog each Friday.  ;D

I'd already bought some of the monthlies and the Complete Judge Dredd and these two and the weekly prog quickly became regular purchases. I had a few Megazines too, with Armitage's second outing and Mechanismo but didn't buy them regularly until volume 2 issue 50. Probably due to the cost, I don't remember.

You bet I do. My girlfriend reads some of it too but prefers the collected volumes.

Wow! Grant, I love TTP. So much so that it was vying for my attention with Babylon 5 and almost won!  :o

By some wonderful coincidence the blog starts with some progs that I bought last week and am currently reading, then a few entries later reaches the period when I started buying 2000ad, the late 800s. It's been a joy to relive those heady days and follow the progression to the 'rebirth' with The Pit, Sinister Dexter and Nikolai Dante.

You may just have inspired me to start my own re-read. Keep it up!

Books & Comics / Re: Comic Collection Management
03 September, 2009, 03:06:51 PM
I have a bit of paper torn from a notebook in my wallet. On it is a list of the progs/megazines/annuals that I don't have. If I happen to stumble across a purveyor of old thrills I just whip it out for comparison. Over time this will become so worn, torn and faded as to be almost illegible. I'll then lose it and have to create a new list, thus the circle begins anew.

I suppose a spreadsheet or database of some sort would enhance my geek-cred but I expect it would be less fun than rifling through my collection every few years to reconstruct The List.

I'd also like to pipe 'er.  ;)

Off Topic / Re: We are all mutants say scientists
02 September, 2009, 04:11:50 PM
If I understood that article correctly, they're saying that the genes we inherit from our parents contain, on average, 100 mutations. We need a term for this rate of naturally-occuring mutation and I propose '1 Stront'.

I owe an apology to Paul Marshall and Alan Craddock for forgetting their names in my previous post. Sorry Paul, sorry Alan.

Paul Marshall and Gary Caldwell, you mean?

Cheers!

Jim
:-[ I'm going to stop posting from work as I'm clearly useless without my reference material. I still haven't got used to four droids on one strip anyway. Script-Art-Lettering, the holy trinity.

Megazine / Re: How crap is Armitage?
02 September, 2009, 01:06:11 PM
I bought my first Meg around the time of Armitage's second series and I've loved the character and the setting ever since. I'm pleased to see from the summary earlier that during my temporary hiatus I only missed one Armitage story. That's also a real shame because the first two series and the flashbacks, apart from being very entertaining reads, established a protagonist and his nemesis in a setting that was hostile to them both. (Efil Drago San is a criminal but he's more a part of the establishment than poor Armitage ever will be.) The third series seemed a bit disjointed (not helped by that episode where the page order was scrambled) but it added another loose plot thread. I always got the the sense that there was something epic rumbling on in the background, but that it would take years of strip-time to resolve. Now, after years of real-time, it seems to have faded away and we're left with police procedurals. They're good stories, but without that epic and shadowy backdrop I wonder whether Armitage is the best character to tell them with.

Monthly episodes don't help. The slow-burn worked a lot better when the Meg was fortnightly.

Quote from: Colin_YNWA on 02 September, 2009, 09:04:43 AMKingdom deserves special mention as that was just a great 6 pages (I hope it was 6 don't have the Prog to hand!) and Elson's art has gone up a notch again.

It was five pages (I counted them last night), as was Shakara, which is probably why they seemed so brief when I read them.

I owe an apology to Paul Marshall and Alan Craddock for forgetting their names in my previous post. Sorry Paul, sorry Alan. That's some great work on Nikolai Dante, especially the blood-soaked double-page spread.

Not read the very earliest SinDex stories, but the thrill lost something the day the giant robot crocodile ceased to be a cast member.

But he was there a couple of progs ago.

I'm sold on the Riddler idea too. The Penguin's shtick was always that he, erm, looks a bit like... a penguin. WTF? The Riddler at least has the potential to be is a dangerous lunatic.
