Film & TV / Re: Last movie watched...

I have no interest in Marvel Studio movies still, but I likely will watch the latest animated Spider-Man movie in the coming months.  I've got to watch Caravan of Courage and The Wailing first.

Quote from: Hawkmumbler on 01 August, 2024, 10:01:56 AMAlso two of my favourite movie of the year involve a big monkey using a smaller monkey to twat some other monkeys, and a guy using a psychic POV sex tape to kill a nazi space incel.

Ooo, that sounds interesting.  What are their titles?

Quote from: Funt Solo on 28 June, 2024, 03:34:44 PMThat one I found a struggle and I'm a huge Leone fan. It may not make any difference to your view but it's really his westerns that shine.

I didn't actually know that he directed it until today when I checked to see if I'd seen any of his films.

I'm not a big fan of westerns so I've never had much impulse to watch his.  I was actually surprised that there was something of his I have seen because I assumed all he did was westerns.

I have only seen one Leone film and I can't say it impressed me (I actually got pretty bored watching it).  It was Once Upon a Time in America.

As I was checking to see if I'd seen any of his other films I discovered that apparently Kurosawa earned more from copyright royalties off of A Fistful of Dollars than he did Yojimbo (a film I have seen and really enjoy).

Quote from: Hawkmumbler on 14 June, 2024, 07:58:46 AMVENOM & VENOM: LET THERE BE CARNAGE

Cheeky afternoon rewatches prior to the third and (assumedly) final outing with cape cinemas only true gay couple.
They're guff, hilarious hokum of the highest degree.
I unapologetically love them, both these movies know the kind of b-flick shenanigans they where crafted to be, there's enough of the cast and crew being in the the joke without it tipping into trite meta humour, some of the stunt fight choreography is unexpectedly great for a bunch of blobs going ham at each other. Big, loud, gaudy and unassumingly camp.
Best cape movies of the last decade, this isn't a hill I will die on, more a sand fort of righteousness. And you aren't allowed in my sand fort.

The Venom films are absolute peak trash cinema - so much fun.  Thanks for the heads up that there's a third.

I'm still really burnt out on the superhero genre.

Are we recommending digital painting software?

Krita has come a long way.  It's more specifically a digital painting program rather than a Photoshop clone and it's got a lot of functionality.  I've been noodling with it for a number of months now and the more I get comfortable with it, the more impressed I am with it.

It's also free.

I agree Morrison is over-rated*... but liking marmite is a step too far!

*I didn't think especially highly of Zenith after finally getting to read it.  Steve Yeowell's artwork was great, sure... but I found the story very meh.

Quote from: pictsy on 25 March, 2024, 06:35:20 PMI always assumed other series had different characters, or different portrayals and perhaps explored different ideas and attitudes.

It's...belaboured and complicated.
Basically the Universal Century is the 'prime' timeline. MSG, Zeta, ZZ and Chars Counterattack are basically one long story spread across a decade in universe and the cast is in constant flux.
0080: War in the Pocket, Gundam F91, 0083: Stardust Memory, Victory Gundam, 08th MS Team, Gundam Unicorn, Gundam Narrative and Gundam Hathaway (as well as the IGLOO series of event films) are all within the UC also but with different casts, though overlap does occur. Some of these are better than other but 08TH MS Team is genuinely fantastic and entirely self contained so maybe give that a shot if you're really interested? It's only 14 episodes long too.

Outside of that, well it gets more complicated (ESPECIALLY with Turn A Gundam and Reconguista in G, both of which take place within their own time lines but reference events of the UC...it gets weird, I'll leave it there).

Of all the alternative timeline entries I'd absolutely recommend the most recent, Witch from Mercury. It's super short at only 24 episodes across 2 seasons, super fun and charming and just...a lovely time really.

Oh and ah, one more thing.

Avoid Gundam Wing like the fucking plague.

Thanks for the recommendations.  Next time I'm in the mood for some anime I'll give them a shot.

Neon Genesis Evangelion was fun.  I like it a lot more after watching those two shows.  Made more sense.

I didn't get on with SDFM because I couldn't stand the characters.  I didn't get on with MSG because I couldn't stand the characters and the show was promoting some really shitty attitudes - I actually read about what goes on later in the series and it was definitely not going to get better in that regard.

I always assumed other series had different characters, or different portrayals and perhaps explored different ideas and attitudes.

I think I need to both rewatch and reread Ghost World.

I remember enjoying the film more.

I tried watching the first Gundam series after having a miserable time watching the first Macros series.  I did not enjoy it at all and just stopped.

I don't know what the other series are like, but I have certainly been put off for a while.

I don't think I even got through season 2 of GoT.  It's a bit of a blob in my memory.  I might have got into season 3.  I don't know... it just couldn't hold my interest.

I did read the main five books of SoIaF.  I really wish I hadn't.

The big take away I got from Bioshock Infinite was that it went on too long.  I was getting bored and aggravated well before the conclusion.  I also really liked the environment design, particularly right at the beginning.

iirc the game was initially intended to be a lot more ambitious with the rails playing a more prominent part in gameplay - but it had to be scaled back.

Interestingly it's the only one of the Bioshock games I completed.  I got bored of the others incredibly quickly.

I played the Portal games again.  They are very cute games, among my favourites.

I gave up on the X-Files.
The programme has problems, for sure.  It's also pretty dated.  The conspiracy stuff hits different today than it did in the 90's and not for the better.  It's conceits can be incredibly contrived.  Nevertheless I persevered.  Then I realised I was persevering rather than looking forward to watching the next episode, so I started watching Brooklyn Nine-Nine again and I've been having a more enjoyable.

Did this in my latest Runequest game.  Scorpion-person jerky is apparently the most delicious thing ever.
