although as I've bored people with many times before, I think (early) Sláine as a story is set more in a synthetic pan-European dream-time than it is in Irish myth.

That's a great point TordelBack. There seems to be a lot of European mythology filtered through Slaine, and not just Irish/Celtic myths. Heck, I've even spotted a Gilgamesh reference or two (maybe coincidence, or wishful thinking?).

Part of the problem I have with Slaine is that Mills can get caught up in mythological/historical details that the script can become quite dry. I thought if there was any problem with the Horned God story, that was it - at times the action would awkwardly cease for exposition.

Yeah DC Dredd is awful...right now I've just read through the 800's and into the 900's in my Prog Slog, and as bad as some of that was, it is nowhere near as bad as that DC rubbish.

Oh yeah, fester is getting better and better - glad I got to work with him before he goes bigtime  :D!

I also liked the Shark's Zombo twist on Re-Animator. Good sexy zombie fun.

In parts of Philly you'll find people that drink a clear liquid called "wooder", while in New York they'll drink the same, but called "wudder".

Ah Kerrin, my favorite parts of the comp are your lyrical intros and outros. You must write these things ahead of time  :D!

Good fun following along as Mr. Campbell posted them...gave me time to take in each one and consider them properly - not that this made my vote any easier. What an amazing bunch of artists we've got here! Well done all!

I always feel bad only being able to vote for 4 entries - someone will always feel left out, and damned if each and every entry wasn't good fun this month!

The Ramada is full...I'll have to check with the wife to see where she booked us today. So...we're all set. And no Peter, you cannot room with us.

But then if we say "Vulf", would we then call him a "Wiking"?

Oh Gloady, beehive.

You like to "keep this handy for close encounters", eh? (the Aliens references never grow old)

You nailed it Kerrin - Pat Mills takes everything too seriously. Sometimes it works for me, like about half of Slaine, half of Nemesis, ABC Warriors and Defoe. But then again his "fun" stuff, such as Metalzoic and Flesh, doesn't do it.

That said, he certainly has lots of ideas.

Wholeheartedly agree with you about LOTR, Mike, although The Hobbit is extremely well-written - and well edited, as are his shorter works which seem to be tighter and more focused.

Is Slaine an archetype might be the better question.

If Slaine and Slaine's adventures are as meticulously researched as we're led to believe (much through Mills' very writing - he speaks with an authorative voice), then we'd have to say Slaine is a Frankenstein's monster of Celtic myths and heroes. Nothing wrong with that. Very little nowadays is wholly original. Tolkien is considered a master, though he did much reworking of myths.

The correct question to be posed is .. .Is Slaine original? the answer is no :)

Ooh. James, we've actually been discussing that on another thread...love to hear your thoughts.
