Yes, that's a rather nice 'un Mike. Great detail there - how did you color it?

Maybe the similarities are just superficial.

Howard's characters seemed to have more depth, and were more tragic (particularly Bran Mak Morn0 and his writing overall is a bit more focused. Mills has so many - so many - ideas that he packs into his stories that they become more than 'adventure yarns'. I do prefer the themes running through REH's works however.

Wow, that's an incredible coincidence, Lordship! Ha, great work there.

So it's apparent the link between the two has been thought about before.

Books & Comics / Patt Mills - Robert E. Howard fan?

Somewhere I've posted my thoughts on the similarities between Robert E. Howard's Solomon Kane character and Defoe, but as I've been mired in a full-on Prog Slog, I've come to realize just how much Slaine resembles one of REH's other creations...

...not Conan the Cimmerian, but Bran Mak Morn.

Sure, there are differences, mainly in that Bran was a Pict. But I think Mills borrowed a lot - or at least was influenced by - Bran Mak Morn's story, particularly for the Demon Killer arc in which Slaine does battle with the Romans.

I am positive Mills wouldn;t have ever openly admitted to being a fan of another writer's work, but hey, I could be wrong. Has he ever mentioned REH as an influence, and what are your thoughts?

My lil locusts can be right lil shits, but there are moments when nothing can compare to having a 15 month old sleeping on your chest or a 6-year-old paint a magnificent work of art for you out of the blue!

Forbidden Planet sells poly bags by 2000AD era sizes...and they have the magazine-sized boxes that say - wait for it - 2000AD on the side! Got my collection all bagged and boarded and stored this way!

I just bought a full set (a few gaps) in Australia (where they are even rarer) for $1250 (700 GBP). now if they run for that here they would be worth even less in the UK. Where there are more of them.
Mind you if you are interested I happy to negotiate buy and overseas freight.
My collection can always do with an upgrade

Yet strangely enough, when we're playing sports it's okay to slap each other on the arse - even in front of crowds - and no one bats an eye...

The Luke Kirby stuff needs to be sorted out and collected.

I purchased it at the thrift store after reading a review describing it as "Harry Potter if written by Lord Dunsany"...not a fan of Harry Potter (read them to my 6-year-old), but I absolutely adore Dunsany.

The opening lines are brilliantly written, but I guess wordsmithing does no good if it's just wordsmithing. Thanks for the advice, Kerrin - I may give it a go just out of curiosity.

Where did you get it and how many comics fit?

I've got a few plastic comics boxes and they're a charm but expensive. I keep all my early Conans, TMNTs and obscure 80's b&w comics in them.

I will have to ask the local Forbidden Planet if they carry these.

First person to suggest a group hug gets punched in the throat!

Cheers

Jim

I've been so full of love and lovliness lately I intended to suggest a group hug. However, I'll now hold off on doing so.

I'll juist save one big special hug for Mr. Campbell at Hi-Ex...
