The most entertaining review of this flick I've read so far comes from our very own Professor Bear.  Arsom stuff.

The Prof is a genius. I read this twice, as i was laughing so hard I was afraid I'd missed whole sentences during my fits!

As a few of you might remember, I embarked on a major prog slog a few years ago. I had just completed my prog collection, and started reading from prog 1 to - I think is was around 1600 at the time. I read every story, every letter, every word beamed on the page by Tharg. I nearly fried my circuits big time.

Like a fool I started reading from the beginning again! But this time I'm moving slower, really taking in the stories I like, ignoring strips that didn't hit with me and passing over letters and such.

One things that strikes me is how Pat Mills carried 2000AD in the early days. His stuff was far and away the best - and well ahead of its time, in my opinion. I am a big fan of Pat Mills' work (I even liked Dynosty), and rereading this early stuff makes me realize just how great of a comics writer he is. Invasion and Flesh leap off the page, especially in comparison to the juvenile Dan Dare, Harlem Heroes and Mach-1 and even a Judge Dredd strip still finding its way. Fantastic stuff, trail-blazing and ahead of its time.

So what are your thoughts when you read those old progs?

*I use the word "adult" very loosely here, as some (many) (most) would argue that despite my age I have a long way to go to reach adulthood, or that I started aging - from a maturity standpoint - backwards when i reach twenty-five.

Shoot! I didn't see this message until now, Johnny! I'm sorry I never got back to you, and I'm sorry we never got together. PM me for my new phone number.

If I remember correctly, I got mum an electric potato peeler and dad a pair of oscillating tower fans.

Hey, Proudhuff! I peek in at the forum now and then, I miss this place and all the weirdos on it (not you, of course). I keep up with most everyone on Facebook at least.

Ah, that would be fantastic if you have some or most! Let me know what you want for them!

Hey folks,

As some of you may know I moved from England to the US last year...aaaaaand well, progs are tough to come by over here. SBT was sending me progs all the way up until the year-ending prog 2013, but while getting back on my feet, finding a job, ect, I couldn't afford to have him send them to me.

Well, I'm back up on my feet now, and need progs! I've missed so much it seems!

If you have progs you're looking to get rid of from prog 2013 on, please PM me and let me know what kind of deal you'd work out with me and we can set up a payment via paypal.

Cheers!

If you want to see just how much of a loon Card is, go to the US Amazon site, search Ender's Game, and read the review he wrote on his own book.

Pff.  I do know your opinions on superhero books by now, Matt,

Have I been gone from the forum for so long that I don't know what your former handle was? I guessing you're Prof Byah - amiright?

I agree with your post, though: we should stay away from it, and make it disappear. I think folks did a good job of that with Frank Miller's last bit of bile, and I think - after the initial bit of curiosity waers off, because, let's be real, there's no way DC allow even a hint of hate-mongering to make it to print - this will be forgotten.

The can't wait bit was pure sarcasm.

Truth be told, I could live the rest of my life without reading a Superman comic regardless of who writes it. But hey, DC's ploy worked - I haven't given a rat's ass about Superman since, like, ever. Yet here i am reading about and discussing him. I suspect many others in this thread fall into the same category.

Superman is a hot topic right now, because of Orson Scott Card. Card fans will check the title out, Card haters will monitor the series. Gay rights folks will keep their eyes on the comic, reporting anything that can be construed as a slur. The self-righteous lot (and they're the loudest) will be up in arms until Card's run is over. And lots and lots of people who would never read the comic will be suddenly very aware of it.

It's a good move by DC from a commercial standpoint. Ethically...well, as far as I'm concerned, if he doesn't use it as a hate platform, I could care less. And we all know DC won't allow that, so IMO there's much to do about nothing here.

A homophobe writing about a grown man in a spandex suit (and tight red undies worn on the outside) while flying around to save the day. Wonderfully ironic, can't wait.

I always start with the logo front and center, but it always slides to the left. I think my head slopes.

I feel Facebook has really done wonders for my comic, El Bigote. The following isn't huge, but I'm pleased with how things are going.

Of course now I'll have to share the link: https://www.facebook.com/elbigotecomic.

Other Reviews / Re: JUDGE DREDD: IDW #1

I thought it was a weak effort for a first issue. Pretty run-of-the-mill story mixing various elements of past Dredd stories. Dredd has a similar entrance to the one he made in prog 2. I felt the first story should have been expanded to fill the issue - that way, we could have gotten a bit more in-depth with each of the set-pieces (
longer fight with the tree, the crooks and even the robots; all three confrontations were over so quickly
). As it was, it was lacking in any suspense (I never felt Dredd was in any danger). I did enjoy the art very much, though I thought the Robocop robots looked kind of dumb.

The second story was well below standard; I don't think Bolt and Rich would commission it for Zarjaz, let alone Tharg print it in the prog. The story's twist was obvious, and...well, the whole thing was dull. And the art was not my thing at all.

That said...

We have to keep in mind this comic wasn't created for us - it was created for the mass market American comic readers, most of whom have little to no exposure to Dredd. We're viewing it with eyes that have been cast over thousands of pages of the "true" Dredd series already.

The few reviews I've googled are positive. What does that mean? Is this a good start to a comic series? Are we just unable to see that because we can't take our fan goggles off to read it objectively?

I'd still say no, it's not a good comic. Not yet. But when I took off my goggles to read it a second time, I felt there was enough there to come back net month and see where it goes.

Will this be available on DVD/Blu Ray - or even online - any time soon? I'm anxious to see it!
