Books & Comics / Re: Bill Watterson biography

Anyone have the delux slipcase set of Calvin and Hobbes?

I have the Far Side and Mad's Don Martin volumes and they're brilliant. However, I did hear Watterson changed a few of his cartoons to make them a bit more PC...

Hullo! Good to meet you!

My wife is in the Air Force and has been deployed to Afghanistan, so collecting the Prog has proven a wonderful way to count down the time til she comes home safe and sound - every week I walk down the WHS knowing that she is another week closer to being back with me. Only 5 more Progs to go!

First of all kev-lev, I want to let you know you're a fantastic artist - but I'm sure you've heard that enough in this forum. I find it extremely difficult to critique art, as I can't doodle a straight line, but I know what I like and what appeals to me, and this work is very nice.

Pinup one is fantastic - the look on the girl's face is both sexy and menacing, and the pose is fantastic.

I have one minor quibble with pinup - and it's not due to your penwork but the digital coloring of Dredd. It's too clean, not gritty enough. But as this is the norm lately, I suppose you've got nothing to worry about. The problem is, when I look at your pencil lines from your roughs, I can see a lot of the individuality in your style that's lost by the digital color...but this is a complaint I have with most comics nowadays, so I wouldn;t mind if you dismiss it. That said, your Dredd is as good as anything in the Progs right now! I'm sure we'll see you there plenty of times in the future!

This should certainly be in the 'Life Spugs' thread...

Perhaps I should calm down  :o. Yesterday I watched a silly program that suggested only America would survive the end of the world, so I wanted to alert everyone to forget the UK citizenship test - study for US or Canadian citizenship! Ha!

It was pretty funny, though - as a paranoia propaganda piece. Don't you find it amazing that such things can still b produced and still work? Does the program raise valid points of concern? At times, yes. But the frantic pace, dire narration and rapid editing were there to give it a "doomsday feel". The end is nigh! The end is nigh! Sadly though, this type of thing is the only way to get many people's attention.

Excellent write-up Emperor!

I've just started writing comic scripts (not for any money mind you), transitioning from writing short stories and screenplays, and I made great use of a few issues of Marvel's "Eye of the Camera" series. In case you don't know, in "Eye of the Camera" a finished comic is presented with the script, allowing a would-be writer to compare finished panel to scripted panel - and we're treated to scripts by the likes of Kurt Busiek no less.

What has been working for me as far as writing scripts (now I have to figure out how to market them....thread?) is to storyboard key segments or scenes and jot whatever notes I need for scripting. This was something I did while writing screenplays for my short films - and even though what ends up in the finished project might be radically different, it helps me to get into the flow of the story and action and also makes me feel like I'm "catching the moment". Then I go back a shape it all up into script format.

Hope I don't sound like a know-it-all, cause this is just what works for me! I look forward to reading tips from others.

Has anyone seen the program "Earth 2100"?

It's very interesting. Scientists from around the world got together and made predictions about Earth's state come 100 years time, factoring in overpopulation, pollution, natural disasters, war all of that...and while the rest of the world succumbs to lack of resources of one kind or another, America, due to its size and the diversity of its natural resources, squeaks by...

So, perhaps everyone should start studying for an American citizenship?  :o

No, us Yanks don't have that on our on citizenship tests! And we don't even ask that when you're entering the country on holiday - unless your skin color is a certain shade of brown, ha.

Seriously though, in commuting back and forth between countries (I live in England now but travel frequently to Philadelphia and New York), getting into or out of Britain is much more of a hassle than entering/exiting the States.

Good lord...What on earth is with the submissions mostly being from people whose names begin with the letters "ma"?

There's Matthews, Matts, Marks, Martins and I'm Malcolm. This could potentially get very confusing...

I sense something sinister brewing.

100% makes me the most Great of them all. A combination of knowing, guessing and being better than you makes me what I am. British.

This might be the most accurate statement I've seen on this forum.
