Creative Common / Setting Up A Webcomic Advice...

We are the dinosaurs to webcomics nimble little furry animals. As we watch the asteroid approach they're all on kickstarter or earning money off the back of millions of views and google adwords.

Now PJ's got me thinking about webcomics. I'm close to releasing the first issue of my comic, and planned to do so with a press run of 200 copies which I plan to give out for free to get word-of-mouth going - I also plan to make the issue available free via clickwheel, myebook, ect, ect, wherever I can host it for free for readers to read for free, ect.

Going forward, might it be best to start of a website, gain a following and eventually go a kickstarter route to fund print releases? Mind, I'm very much a traditionalist and will always have print copies available, but maybe only in runs of 100 or 200 - while a webcomic, obviously, has the potential to reach many, many more readers on a comparable budget.

But I'm that comics dinosaur PJ describes. And on top of that, I'm fairly computer illiterate. Any advice that any of you have for me - from finding a place to host the comic to figuring out how to get advertising on the site or even how to draw readers to it - would be greatly appreciated. Heck, if any of you wants to partner up on that front, I'd be appreciative and willing to work out some sort of agreement.

I have my team assembled (El Chivo on art droid duty, Bolt 01 on letters), have a first episode finished and several other scripts in production to keep the strip regular whether it goes forward in print form or webcomic or both (I think both).

Of course, I'd be remiss if I didn't pimp that project right now. Here are the links to El Bigote, a Gothic Mexican Horror Western Dark Comedy:

Cheers for taking the time to read, and thank you in advance for any advice you might give!

Meanwhile, Rich Burlew has just raised $90K in 2 days through Kickstarter to get one of the dead-tree volumes of his terrific web-comic Order of the Stick back in print...

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/599092525/the-order-of-the-stick-reprint-drive

...so there's still money in comics somewhere, just maybe not in the traditional arenas.

So this is a realistic route?

I've never seriously considered it, because I simply hate being bothered by folks trying to get money off me for their projects...but I suppose Mr. Burlew has been at his webcomic for years and has a following. I may have to look into that, so thanks for the link Tordel.

And no worries PJ - I think most of us enjoy appreciate the perspectives you give us on the 'real world' of comics.

I would suggest asking any suspicious characters their thoughts on the new Dredd film. It'd probably get a reaction like the blood test in The Thing.

  Brilliant!

Not to Rebellion, he's not. In spraying his bile around the internet, on dozens of boards, he's working quite effectively as an anti-PR campaign for the Dredd movie.

Exactly. To some, I may seem the dickhead for starting this thread, but I did it with the best intentions. Whilst there are a few of you folks that have had more experience with him, I've seen him run through here two or three times in the 3 years I've been posting.

And most of you know me. I've never started a thread like this, so it's not like I'm on any sort of 'witch hunt' or out to get someone.

But I just can't shake the sense something is up here. The responses from that individual (posing as two individuals no less) in this thread should make it clear. And I don't think this poster is being very subtle when you look closer at his posts (between both his handles).

Maybe I'm wrong, maybe there is something in the water over here. I apologize to those of you who feel "there's more important things in life than trolling a troll". Carry on then, and I'll leave you to it.

It's my 200th post.

That post belongs in "Life Spugs" for the rest of us. ""

Let me ask you, wonkychop: when you meet a new person in real life, do you immediately drown him in your shallow stream of consciousness? Never mind, you probably do.

Locust. I don't know if you will read this 'cos hopefully I'm on your ignore list. This should have gone into Sharks "are you mental thread" because it sounds to me if you are getting paranoid. I hope this doesn't offend you.

Yep.

I have the strange feeling that He-Who-Should-Not-Be-Named is mucking up the forum again, and in fact may be wearing several guises (at least two). Is it possible for a mod to check up on that?

As we get closer to the Dredd film's release, I think we ought to keep a lookout for you-know-who. There will (hopefully) be a lot of new traffic through the forum and I'd hate to see this place go through THAT again. A quick trip over to the film's imdb page is enough to remind me how utterly annoying that guy is.

Rogers found a challenger for his crown

No. Roger's actually clever and worth reading (most of the time).

Right, Firefly has me thinking I've missed out on other quality sci-fi shows - so I started watching Farscape tonight. So far, the pilot leaves me unimpressed (except for the glorious puppets) but then Firefly's pilot left me somewhat cold as well...

Even I've managed to stop myself posting facile and witless comments on this thread (up to now) so give it a rest.

I'm glad someone else said it, Cosh, because somehow I've resisted saying it. And it's not just on this thread - it's on every thread. I can't read a single thread these last few days without these two annoying the shit out of me.

Close both of your accounts now.

I can tell you that the image book I drew - Fearless, sold in the region of 3.5k (a crappy number I think, but still within the top 300 books that sold that month) and I've never earned a penny from it.

Really? Maybe I should scrap my plans to go to Oakland next month for Image's pitch-fest...

TBH I really enjoyed RE5 and dont see what all the moaning was about.

Me, too. I thought there were a few very creepy scenes (the African villages). Whilst I thought 4 was better, I certainly enjoyed 5.
