Suggestions / Re: Kid Friendly Reprint

Quote from: stacey on 12 October, 2009, 12:16:51 PMIt is one of my pet bugbears about the lack of comics for kids around.  All those stupid gaudy things in the newsagents are not comics, they are magazines with bits of plastic tat sellotaped to the front. The have a couple of strips in but they aren't comics.

Agreed. Primers for tomorrows consumers?

Books & Comics / Re: Asterix at 50

Asterix books were tremendous fun. The first twelve, at least, are well worth reading. Mansion Of The Gods, Asterix The Legionaire, and In Spain were among my favs.

Oh, and Cleopatra really did have a very pretty nose.

Walter The Wobot (many already in colour).

What is the age range of the 'kids' in question? Younger than the 12 -14 age range that would have been the original target audience?

I liked Drag Me To Hell.  Essentially it's an OTT remake of Night of the Demon and that's one of my all-time faves, so I'd not need much prompting to dislike a rip-off - but Raimi's homage is good daft fun that grosses you out more through moments of 'ick' than throwing dismembered parts and gallons of blood at the screen.
I recently rewatched the Fright Night films and Monster Squad - all recommended if you haven't seen them before.

I'm not a big horror fan either but would also recommend the original Night Of The Demon. Not particularly scary, but a sterling effort for a B movie. Worth it for Brian Wilde's (Last Of The Summer Wine) five minute cameo, if nothing else.

Psycho and The Shining are loads more scary than any of todays blood-soaked offerings. 28 days Later was a cut above the rest though. Compulsion, by Roman Polanski (not horror, but uncomfortable). Bad Taste (Hilarious, Peter Jackson, from 1987 - and maybe even something the wife could watch)?

btw. Does anyone know where Dave Gibbons artwork first appeared?

Isn't it widely held to be Powerman for a Nigerian publisher?

Cheers

Jim

Actually, I meant to ask what other British comics would Gibbons work have appeared in pre-2k? I'm guessing not many as I'm sure I'd have heard about it by now. Would be nice to check some out though, if possible.

Or buy some of the Hotspur Albums when Ron did the covers as well as some excellent work inside.

Did he do the cover to the 1975 one? (Use the drop-down menu in the following link):

Hi Jim, that's pretty good detective work. Having said that, I'd like to think I'd recognise Jim Watson off the bat as some pre-2000AD Warlord stuff I've seen of his is much more obviously "Jim Watson" than the above Hornet piece.

My first thought was actually Chaykin inked by Janson, but that would obviously be nuts.

It would be nice if someone could post some pre-2000AD Ron Art just to see how he developed. The only example I have is a one-off from Warlord circa 1976 and is pretty obviously him.

Isn't there a bit of a problem with any imaginary Ron Smith 2000AD collection, in that the vast bulk of his stuff is B&W Dredd, and that's now all back in print.  He's almost too tied up in the fabric of Dredd to pull his contribution out.   Also, much of the remainder is on stories that most of us would rather not have to read again.  Seems like the 'best' Smith collections would be non-2000AD stuff, a definitive Daily Star run, or a compilation of his outside work.

Talking of outside work, can anyone tell me if the following mid-'70s page from the Hornet is Ron Smith? If not Ron, then any ideas who it might be?

(Apologies if this is slightly off-topic):

I voted Stronty as well. Brad Pitt as Johnny. Ron Perlman as Wulf. Not sure who gets to play the Gronk.

Long overdue movie.

That's the one. Having re-watched it, I don't think it's what B.S.C.'s looking for.

Nada Surf -Popular? The video has elements of all the above, though currently hard to find it on youtube.
