Well literally thanks to Cameron and the hype around Avatar, my local cinema (Showcase in Nantgarw) finally upgraded to 3D and Cardiff got itself an IMAX.
So for that at least he's almost made up for Titanic

Saw this last night. It was fun enough and Ali Larter makes a HAWT redhead. Lots of nods to the games, as usual, and decent set peices made all the more cool with good use of 3D. Of course the story was all over the place, but not enough that it bothered me at all.

Still say Pirhana holds the dumb but fun 3D crown at the moment though.

Film & TV / Re: Long distance, chick flick for us.

Now I'm all for the fact that some chick flicks are watchable... I have a strange love of Steel Magnolias... Shirley MacLaine is AWESOME and Julia Roberts dies

But saying you might as well wait for Expendables to come to dvd and go see this instead?

Uh-oh... ten minutes into the 2000AD prog 1700 part of waiting for the trade and we've already had
"Well I hope the interiors are better than the cover"
and dismissive sighs at Dredd

Its looking like those of you who love to get your angry on are gonna LOOOVVE this one
I'll be finishing it off going home tonight as yesterday and this morning was working through the news and CLiNT parts. Just about to send an "Are you f*cking mental" message about the cover comment tho.

General / Some additional audio goodness for 2000AD fans
15 September, 2010, 09:30:28 AM
I know 2000AD is woefully underappreciated by the general world of podcasts, so as I know two that have come out this week and feature it, I thought I'd give you guys a heads up in case you were after some drive-to-work listening

First is Good Morning Geekdom...
They do a feature called "Gateway to Geekdom" which is basically recommendations for either total newbies or people looking to try something different. The pick this episode is the 2000AD jumping on prog 1700. Wont be anything new for you guys but still cool to hear someone getting excited over 2000AD.... especially as its my wife doing it so of course has to give Leigh Gallagher a bit of stick  :)

You can direct download the mp3 here, or if you wanna use itunes they are on the same Geek Syndicate feed as mine and Flints 2000AD cast
http://geeksyndicate.wordpress.com/2010/09/15/good-morning-geekdom-episode-8/

Second is Waiting for the Trade.
As the name suggests they usually just do trade paperbacks but in the new one they talk CLiNT and 2000AD 1700. Not had a chance to listen to this yet, its queued up for the drive home.

You can get it here, or just search their title in itunes
http://wftt.libsyn.com/index.php?post_id=640774

And an honourable mention....

Another podcast called Dissecting worlds. Basically looking at the workings of fictional universes as if they were real and making parallels with historical civilisations. Manages to be clever without feeling patronising and I've recently loved their Mass Effect and Marvel/DC Universe episodes. They also did a special on the Dredd Universe back in June which I did link at the time, but might as well repost in case anyone missed it

http://geeksyndicate.wordpress.com/2010/06/01/tgwnn-series-2-a-new-name-dissecting-worlds-and-this-episode-the-dreddverse/

Again, you can itunes them through Geek Syndicate if you'd prefer.

If anyone else knows any podcasts where 2000AD stuff has been featured or reviewed drop some links in as its always cool hearing other people's opinions and shouting "YOURE WRONG YOU IDIOT" at the car stereo.

I'd be up for seeing three more, especially if Hamill comes back as an older and possibly bitter Skywalker. I'd ideally like them to be a lot more adult though and as others have said, let Lucas drop in some plot points but give it to someone else.

Best case we get three cool movies. Worst case we're no worse off than now.
But then I dont hate the prequels. Well, not all of them. First was a train wreck but 2 and 3 were decent enough sci-fi (and I hate to use this word but it seems the most apt) romps.

And being in a packed cinema which lost its shit when Yoda had his gunslinger moment was something thats gonna stick with me for a while.

Film & TV / Re: 3D

Cinema wasnt much better. It was only the last 5 minutes or so when the characters in the movie shouted "LETS ALL PUT ON OUR 3D GLASSES..... AS A SYMBOL OF... UM... SOMETHING"

3D was crappy, movie was a bit of a disappointment.
Though as it came out the week Freddy Mercury died I did get a morbid chuckle out of the
"Freddy's Dead - Music by Brian May" credit.

sorry, de-rail... as you were.

Film & TV / Re: 3D

Oh yeah, the 3D is DEFINITELY a "Lets see your downloaded copies do this"

Its like cinemascope back when TV first kicked in.

It is a gimmick but I do think that due to the investment involved in outfitting a cinema to play 3D movies its one that will be around for a while. Hell, I could even see it going on forever now, if only on cgi kids movies. Dont think it'll become the norm though.

And I've only seen movies made in 3D, not retro-fitted, and I gotta say they both worked really well for me whereas the old 3D never really did the job... even at the end of Elm Street 6 back in the day!

Im a fan but have only seen two movies in it so far (going to see Resident Evil on Wednesday).

Avatar had depth and did impress the hell out of me as an experience... this probably due to it being both my first "new" 3D movie and also my first proper IMAX having only ever seen The Matrix at an IMAX cinema in the past.

Pirahna 3D made the most out of the gimmick and played it as that... a fun gimmick to exploit the hell out of. And for me that really worked.

Did a review of this for the Geek Syndicate website if anyone interested

http://geeksyndicate.wordpress.com/2010/08/25/judge-dredd-tour-of-duty-the-backlash/

short version... ARSOM!!

The literal last progs story in this collection is the first one I read when Flint asked me to be the newbie on the podcast. Its like this book was made JUST to bring me up to speed on what I missed. Absolutely loved it.

Waiting for the pc version
Would have gone for the wii, but after the Wolverine game was 4 times as long and 100 times as much fun on the pc as opposed to the wii, I'll hang on
