I'm excited for the new film, I read 'Peach Trees' and if that's what ends up on screen, you'll hear no complaints from me, although that script seems to imply that Justice Dept. has no Psi Div, which is an odd angle.

Karl Urban, eh? Well at least it was anyone BUT Jason Statham! Statham would have been an instant "I'm not paying to see it"

For the record, Stallone wasn't great in the role but at least looked good with the helmet on. That movie is crap though :S

General / Work in Progress- Judge Dredd helmet
29 August, 2010, 11:33:47 PM
Hi guys, haven't posted in a while. A while ago I started work on a Lawgiver Mk1 and a Dredd helmet....well the Lawgiver is on hold for now as I was building it from a NES Zapper and sadly it broke during construction and is not salvageable.

However, my Dredd helmet is progressing and it's now in a stage where I can show it too you, it is very rough around the edges at this point though.

I have been using 'Emerald Isle' as my main reference for the helmet, I like how it looks in that one. I'm not over keen on the cheekplates having that curve when viewed from the front...I know Termight's has it and others have built theirs that way, I'm not criticising them at all but I prefer the straight-edged look :) Now the Emerald Isle helmet has quite a low-profile mohawk section, and for most of the story the respirator badge appears to curve around the front of the helmet, I originally wanted to try and recreate that but rather early on decided to go the easier route of buying a respirator badge from Termight and working around that. Thanks to Wake BTW, fantastic work on those badges.

Some of my reference:

Anyway I started off with the deleuxe Iron Man costume helmet...at this point I should thank 'Judge Palmer' for leaving the faceplate off the helmet visible in one of his photos, that gave me the idea to sacrifice mine. I thought I could see a faint curve in his which told me roughly what he cut away and I did likewise. Having found more pictures from him on the RPF I can see that I was actually a way off what he did but never mind. That Iron Man helmet BTW is a great base helmet but they are about £40 brand new so only use one if you can get it cheap. I see them on eBay from time to time at a fraction of the cost.

So the process was very trial-and-error, first I experimented with some wire and cardboard just to get an idea of the shapes and what I needed to cut off the helmet. Then the add-ons were done by supergluing some thin plastic to the inside of the helmet and cutting the shapes from that. The thin plastic also served to block the big holes which are left in the sides of the helmet once you remove the massive vent cover things. Then I matched the shapes with some thick plastic and used two-part epoxy resin to secure those to the clear plastic and the helmet. The thick plastic also finished filling the big holes in the side. The epoxy was from Poundland, it's no Araldite and tricky to get off your hands, but it does the job. The next step will be puttying and sanding, a coat of 'Bondo' would do wonders as well but I've never used it before.

And so here it is:

Due to the trial-and-error nature of the construction, it's not entirely symmetrical...but then, neither were the original Stormtrooper helmets in Star Wars. The fit is pretty good for my head, not perfect but padding should sort that out. I think my that my big nose is going to end up far too close to the visor than I would like. Also I have a funny feeling finding a visor to fit will be a b*stard.

Comnments, criticisms and advice much apopreciated :)

Help! / Re: Dredd's vices...

IIRC, smoking and alcohol are not permitted in Mega City One. Other countries are more lax; Judge Sergeant Joyce of the Murphyville Judges drinks synthi-stout (Guinness) and is married. He offers to take Dredd out for a pint when they first meet, Dredd's response is, "A DRINK? Are you trying to be funny?!"

I have it on good authority that although Edward Woodward died, Callan refuses to lay down and die :)

The Aliens 'Colonial Marines Technical Manual', written before Alien3, gives a much better follow-up to Aliens.

Little known fact: the final chapter of the Technical Manual -- the one dealing with the Aliens themselves -- was lifted in large part wholesale from the Alien Biology articles that I wrote for Dark Horse UK's Aliens magazine ...

Cheers

Jim

Hey yeah, there's your name in the credits at the back! Well Jim in that case I would like to say how good your stuff is, and suggest that you should be writing Alien movies, and not whoever was responsible for 3 and Ressurection.

Another thing that annoyed me was when Sigourney Weaver was interviewed by Empire in the run-up to the first AVP, and she called it "..a bad idea". I thought "She's got some nerve saying that after the last two Alien movies"...

I finished Damnation Alley today. What a great book.

You should watch the film, I love it. I mean, it's pretty much a B-movie, but it's good fun. Plus you get John 'Hannibal Smith' AND Stringfellow Hawke together in the same film, driving a huge armoured truck! And the classic line:

"This whole town is infested with killer cockroaches, repeat, KILLER COCKROACHES!!"

Look, I'm half Irish, I felt I should make the point that there wasn't any trouble at the match.

Also, I think the only good thing to come out of this is that it will go some way towards the introduction of video replays for referees

I don't like Alien3, and I don't count it or Resurrection as canon. The opening sequence of 3 is utter b*llocks, so everything from that point is tainted.

At the end of Aliens, the Queen (which detached its egg sac on LV426) takes out Bishop, then drops down and fights Ripley, before getting blown out the airlock. It clearly doesn't scuttle off to some corridor in the depths of the Sulaco and lay an egg, 'just in case'....not that it could anyway, because the egg sac is gone.

So Alien3 is flawed from the get-go and the whole premise is flawed, because that egg couldn't and shouldn't be there.

The Aliens 'Colonial Marines Technical Manual', written before Alien3, gives a much better follow-up to Aliens. It's done in the style of reports by W-Y staff; they start off by reporting how the Sulaco has been recovered and they have gotten lots of data from Bishop, and at the end they figure out that the explosion of the colony reactor would NOT have touched the original derelict (it would be sheltered by the Ilyium range) and that there will still be some specimens there. It ends with communications from an extraction team who have recovered specimens....that's a much better basis for a sequel.

Let it be noted that there was zero violence from the Irish supporters at the stadium. Would we be saying the same if it was England? I doubt it....

NO to Statham as Dredd, thank you!

IMH, the best way to avoid the whole issue of an actor wanting their face to be seen, á la Stallone, would be to cast an UNKNOWN. Someone with the right build, the right jawline etc...I'd like to see that.

But Statham? *shudder*

I had the full set of ReAction figures, courtesy of 'Your More Store' (RIP) who did them for £3 each. Decent figures, actually. The Legendary Comic Book Heroes Dredd is fantastic, except for the guns, the gold elbow pads (I prefer the green padded style), and the fact that YOU CAN SEE HIS FACE (if you peer up into the helmet)

I expect these new 1/6 figures to be ridiculously priced, á la Hot Toys.

I saw a 1/6 female Street Judge (based on that movie *shudder*) on eBay the other day, unlicenced I think but nicely done.
