Prog / Re: 2000ad's Dan Dare - why didn't he come back?

heh, I think Revolver's Dan Dare killed it off more effectively than anything else. It was completely, horrifyingly brilliant but really knocked the stuffing out the character. I bet it's one reason why the Dan Dare Corp are so cautious.

Prog / Re: Prog 1858- Gorehead Unchained

Recrewt's posting of the T-rex image side by side with the cover helped me work out what was wrong with the cover - the anatomy is too much like a human, albeit a really demonic looking one. The top third of the head on the t-rex image is very narrow and doesn't really have a forehead but more of a crest with the eyes on both sides. The eyes are also much smaller.

Apart from that though, it's a pretty dynamic design and the gaping jaw screams danger. Gorehead is almost bursting off the the comic into my living room. The logo is covered up a bit too much as I nearly missed it on the shelf. Given that 2000ADs are often placed at the back, the darker covers can sometimes be a bit hard to locate and I need the logo or byline to help me out. I'm glad the byline had Gorehead's name on it else I might have walked past. I really liked the colours as they were a bit different.

As far as the contents of the comic goes - I think Brass Sun is perhaps moving a bit slowly (although stunningly imaginatively) but will be brilliant when collected and it is always good to have different stories moving at different paces. I have enjoyed this iteration of Damnation Station more than the first. It felt more space opera less soap opera. It's always good to see the master, John Burns, in the comic and I liked that panel where Brian muttered rebelliously under his breath just like little kids do when told off. I thought that was a good bit of observation and I could almost hear him. Flesh has been pretty funny in part nine and I LOVED that panel where Gorehead flips the corporate shill into his mouth. The 3riller could have been an ongoing series and I really enjoyed the art. Nice to have Jesus Redondo back - I really hope he stays around.

Yes, my favourite cover this year so far. It's beautiful.

Rest of the prog was enjoyable too. Aquila is my fave strip but Dredd is good at the moment because I really like that collection of judges as characters.

I don't have much of a problem with Carter's voluptuousness in Flesh apart from the fact that every woman in that strip is drawn in exactly the same way so that I can't tell them apart. But then the men are usually drawn like gargoyles so I don't think humans are James McKay's top strength or perhaps he prefers animals to people. There is more character in the men's faces which I put down to his having grown up looking at a bloke in the mirror as it definitely helps. When I draw the opposite sex they're more of a wish fulfilment exercise too.

The shading on Carter's arse was pretty flat. If he 'felt' her as a character he might have lovingly described that admirable roundness. On the next page she confidently stands at a perky angle with hands on hips and her head doesn't quite fit the body because it's not big enough, I think. He just horizontally flips the source he was drawing from at the bottom which is okay to save time but doesn't show what she's thinking much. The men look fantastic in the middle panel - I assume he was using source refs then as the one on the right looks just like Jack Palance.

He does fabulous dinosaurs and dinosaur world. He is great at action. The heavy linework makes me think of lino cuts which is a good thing. There was some marvellous warping in this episode too. My favourite panel was the last one. Carter looks a real person and has some expression on her face and then the reflection shows the real danger. It's a great POV shot.

I've quite enjoyed this rather quiet interlude in Flesh's story too.

The rest of the comic is completely marvellous. Totally different styles, complex stories and Damnation Station was very sad this week. DS seems to be telling its story in a more fragmented way at the moment and getting the readers to connect the dots more. However, I shall see whether it all falls into place in later episodes.

I don't want Judge Joyce Jr to cop it in anyway. Y'hear me Mr Carroll?

Ah that's a bit more positive. Good luck to your girlfriend, Will. Having experienced a milder form of eating disorder in my late teens I remember how long it took to get back to 'normal' and I've never quite managed a particularly healthy attitude towards eating since. It's a big struggle so she's a real fighter..

I don't keep my copies and I got a Simon Davies cover (Ian Botham! That's who it reminded me of. Plus there's an actor whose name is refusing to come to mind.) So if anyone wants it they could PM but don't expect a fast reply what with weddings I have to go to and stuff.

Now that there Carl Critchlow is good inee. And Mr Bagwell. Awesome.

Fabry is my favourite as he put so much effort into character, storytelling and backgrounds. However, I agree that Bisley's is the definitive take because no-one seems to be able to do anything different now. I wish they would though, just for the hell of it.

Actually Radiator, once you started explaining a bit more I immediately started thinking about PMDD too. I'm lucky in that I don't get really bad PMS but I have polycystic ovaries which means a whole other range of problems. Both conditions are affected by imbalanced hormones and I know someone who started one pill, the PMDD went beserk so they started a different type of pill and her symptoms eased. It isn't the standard model of depression as most of the time the sufferer is okay - just that one week or two a month when life is utterly unbearable.

She must know that even at best she has really, really bad PMS and it really doesn't have to be that way. There are things a doc can do and she can feel less wretched. She may well have had less than sympathetic doctors who didn't listen before. It took me over 10 years to get some of my gynae problems diagnosed. So she should keep trying until someone takes her seriously.

Jayzus - keep trying! Loads of writers seem to paper their rooms with rejection slips - it comes up regularly in interviews. Just input the phrase into a search engine and see. However if you keep going you'll get there.

Personally I have more sympathy with your Mrs, Radiator, knowing how awful it feels.

When the prog is really good you get plenty of frothing adulation - remember Trifecta?

All in al a decent prog this week. Zombo was funny but Zombo himself was a bit of a passenger in the story. I am worried that the constant story inflation has left him behind.

Congratulations Trouty! I'm glad you are settling in well. I hope your family is also having a good time.
