Film & TV / Re: Ideal TV repeats
25 February, 2007, 07:58:43 PM
I thought I was just making a throwaway comment.  I have only seen one episode of Shameless and it just seemed to be a bunch of stereotypes - maybe I missed some hidden subtlety in there somewhere but the show looked to me to be laughing at the people they portray rather than with them.

I have seen Love Thy Neigbour on DVD recently and to be honest it seemed to be anti-racist at heart, though the execution of it was extremely clumsy.

Love Thy Neighbour, Mind Your Language, It Aint Half Hot Mum, Black and White Minstrels...

or is stereotyping only acceptable when depicting the underclass these days, making shows like Shameless OK?

Suggestions / Re: Reprints in the Meg?

Some of the annual and specials Dredd stories that never made it into the Case Files?  They may be poor but they are at least rare and old enough to be gaps in many peoples collections.

Other Reviews / Re: EE #19: Time Flies!

To be honest, I want EE's to be stuff from pre Prog 400 days, purely because that right there is the gap in my collection :> (plus, I enjoyed the Shako one so much...)

Time Flies feels to recent - oh, I know it actually ages ago, but I want to live in a world where the 90's are very recent and I am therefore not old...

Looks like he's taken the 'Arrest Black Babies Before They Become Criminals' slogan from T-Shirt Hell seriously.  He should wear that shirt on his next public appearence.

I have mine in box files in the attic.  26 progs fit in each one so I have lots.  My Megazines are in them, too.  Fairly handy when I want to re-read anything as I have all the boxes labelled.

According to the Fantasy & Sci Fi Book Club's website, the Dredd Casefiles are going to be a set of 13 books.

First time I've seen your Touched By The Hand of Tharg page - love it :)

yes, I understand that some of those stories don't need addressing - especially Helltrekkers which has been reprinted fairly recently in the meg - but, yes.  If the Case Files were ordered as on your site, that'd be ideal!

The biggest headache I think is going to come when they get to the crossovers - will Dredd world stories be included, or just those 2000ad stories appearing under the main Judge Dredd heading?

2106
Helltrekkers

2107
Anderson: Four Dark Judges

2108
Anderson: The Possessed

2109
Anderson: Hour of the Wolf

2110
Chopper: Soul on Fire
Chopper: Song of the Surfer
Anderson: Contact

2111
Anderson: Contact
Anderson: Helios
Anderson: Triad
Anderson: The Prophet
Anderson: Random Man
The Dead Man

How does all of this fit in?  Some of it is important stuff in the development of Dredd's world and effects Dredd stories directly (such as 'Four Dark Judges' and 'The Dead Man')

And then it gets *really* complicated with the introduction of the Megazine.  Will there be seperate Case Files for Megazine Dredds and other direct Dredd world stories?  How will they piece together stuff like Judgement Day?

So far we are missing a handful of Annual and Specials stories, but as the series grows, I'm interested to know how it will be handled.

I'd have gone for what they seem to be doing - taking it a year at a time and including everything related to that year in one or two (or three...) books with the year clearly labelled on the spine.  I'm geeky enough to have an excell spreadsheet dividing all the stories into thier respective Dredd years in order and everything, and for me any complete re-read of Dredd should iclude at leaast those extra stories that have an impact on the development of the story - those early Anderson's in particular.

Suggestions / Re: Graphic Novel Subs

I'd sub to the Case Files.  Bloody hard to get hold of the first one - Forbidden Planet sold out, other local comic shops and Waterstones didn't have it, 4-6 week estimated delivery time on Amazon... and I live in Manchester, not short of big specialist shops.

That would be very interesting indeed and would take Dredd  places the story has never been before.

It crossed my mind reading it that Dredd might still be considering offering Nate that auxillary post knowing full well (and I have no doubt Dredd knows full well - he has never been stupid or gullible) that Nate is the vigilante - perhaps letting him off under 'diminished responsibility' (futsie) rules or some-such. It would suit my Dredd-geek-lore for Joe to bust Nate immediately, but Tharg in the letters page hints at Nate continuing his killing spree... and I have to admit I would not be up in arms over any 'out of character' guff if this was to happen - this  is such a good story.

Y'know, for such a hyped up story it was OK... just a pity it was completely overshadowed by the excellent mandroid over in 2000AD. A real coup would have been to serialise Floods 13 in the prog, and print the whole of Mandroid in the anniversary Meg.

Back to lurking...

For me it is defiitley the t-shirts that were available in the 80's which really need to be re-released exactly as they were.  I have the Stare Into The Face Of Death one, the Death Aid one, the Torqemada 'Are You Pure' one, the Nemesis 'I am the Deathbringer' one (lots of 'death ones but the again I _am_ a goth) and a great Dredd one.  The 80's shirts were fabulous and I would love to get hold of them all again in decent condition.
