Books & Comics / Re: Starscape Update

What's the false pretence?  Gary Simpson wrote for 2000AD.  It was a bloody good story and the zombie tale 'Dead' has received good reviews as well. (and the next one, Ouija, is sensational!).

If I just said, it's a zombie story, you'd probably wonder if it's any good.  My response would be, "well it's written by someone that's been published by 2000AD" (he's also written for a few other companies too).  Doesn't guarantee this one will be any good but it's an indication that he can write.

And if you think anyone involved in small press is writing for capital gain, you're crazy.

Books & Comics / Starscape Update
30 June, 2005, 07:37:30 PM
As some of you may be aware, I'm going to be spending some time in Egypt.  This means, unfortunately, that Starscape bi-monthly will be suspended.  The good news is that Starscape will be relaunched next year as a quality produced graphic novel that will hopefully be available in comic and book shops as well as via the web and mail order.

Amongst the stories to look forward to is the complete zombie epic 'DEAD', from the mind of Gary '2000AD' Simpson and Lee 'The Confessional' O'Connor.  There's also another great story of the GUARD DOGS, as written by former Marvel UK editor (now editing Panini comics and working for televsion in both Britain and Spain) and Commando/ Spider-Man/ Power Rangers writer Jason Quinn with the enormous talent of Pedro Cruz, as our heroes face off against the terror that is...Stick Boy?! And it seems likely that Pedro will be helping out Jason on a new Spanish childrens TV series on the strength of his work for Starscape!

One of our newest recruits is Tom McLaughlin who was recently completed a script for Spider-Man (Web of Spider-Man #3) that Spider-Fan.org rated 5 out of 5! Tom's now working on his first commissioned horror movie but took time to write the time-travelling epic 'GOLDEN' featuring the purity of golden-age heroes up against the grim'n'gritty villains of today!

Talking of time-travelling, we'll be completing the tale of CLOCK WORKS by one of my favourite writers, Grant Springford, as well as bringing you the comic adaptation of the KNIGHTS OF ETERNITY featuring the temporal warrior of the Eternal and a cast of mythical heroes, including Beowulf, Robin Hood, CuChuchalinn, Lancelot and Merlin as the demons from our celtic past return!

And don't forget the return of the Deterrent as he faces off the might of the Dreen and discovers that enemies aren't always in the places you expect!

To those that subscribed to Starscape, expect some special deals, Egyptian comics (in English, natch) and free gifts - thanks for the support.

And stay tuned for a series of webcomics dedicated to superhero action inspired by the excitement of Bronze and Silver Age Marvel!  And talks are ongoing with Fleetway Egmont aimed at publishing a series of classic stories in graphic novel format.

Keep looking to the stars!

Chris

But it's got Geoff as a main character and he's fantastic ('oh yeah, turn it off when I come on').  Unfortunately, Herr Flick is also in it a lot :(

If you're not a fan of the series, the film will make absolutely no sense to you.  Thought it was good fun but not the most amazing film I'd ever seen.  Recommended but not 'to die for'!

Help! / Comic Expo table available
11 May, 2005, 08:10:57 PM
Aargh! The wife can't come! Been told to submit her PhD this week (strangely enough that's what happened to me last year, hence no exhibit then), so I'll have two tables to run on my own. If anyone wants half a table for free in exchange for helping me out, you're
welcome.

Books & Comics / Re: Striker's done...

Still, I have to say that had I known they were reprinting Billy's Boots I might have been sorely tempted to start picking up a copy. Don't suppose there's a chance of Starscape picking it up, do you?

Nah. Was pretty confident of getting Doomlord though until yer man announced it.  Might be some developments on a classic strip after Bristol.

As for Striker.  It seems to have sold quite well to me - often more than 2000AD, so there must be something wrong with the accountancy.  In the end, it held no interest for me as I love football but have no interest in footballers.  Still, it lasted pretty well and I hope it doesn't put Pete Nash off.  Think a monthly would be a goer.

I'll be another at the Novotel.  Starscape and the Superhero Store will be displaying at tables 2 and 3.  Got a number of Actions, Battles, Starlords, Tornados and 2000ADs going for sale.

BTW apologies for not commenting on the board too often.  I won't bore you with the details but I do regularly tune in.

Seeing as I've not signed in for ages, I'll put my mention here.  Starscape - a comic influenced by 2000AD, Valiant and the Mighty World of Marvel - will be at Bristol, so pick up a copy of vol.1, issues 1-6 featuring the Leopard from Lime Street, plus all-new stories from creators from 20000AD, Marvel and DC Thomson, plus issue 1 of vol.2 is now out with zombies, super-heroes and time-travellers.

The Superhero Store also has a stall and will be selling early 2000AD, a complete series of Tornado, Starlord issues, a stck of Action, war comics like Battle and Warlord, plus adventure comics in Valiant and Victor, not to mention gole, silver, bronze, gilded and modern age Marvel, DC and independent comics from the US and Marvel UK.

Via Diamond (assuming they accept it!) but probably still cheaper on PayPal.  Also available through Amazon.

Should feature a brand new cover by...nah, I'll keep you guessing (believe me, it's a real coup!).  Also an interview with...actually I'll keep that to myself too!

Many thanks to a certain artist and comics newshound for the negotiations etc...more details when I can confirm.

Anyone know what the rights issues are?  Obvious answer seems creator rights but on British work that old it seems unlikely.  I had the thought maybe it's to do with The Spider: Master of Men?

Anyway, you can still buy the Hookjaw book next year as the first in a series of Fleetway collections (all being well) from Spitfire.

Starscape and Superhero Store have two tables at Bristol.  Now that I'm in the middle of relocating back to Scotland, that'll mean Moniaive then, as well.  Maybe I'll have to organise a fest in Edinburgh if Moniaive is finishing.
