After narrowly avoiding a "Summer Offensive" theme July's winner Adrian Bamforth has plumped for something rather topical:

QuoteTHE DEATH OF DREDD.

The eldster isn't getting any younger. He's beaten more perps than you've sold hot cakes but one of the real narrative thrills of Dredd is the real-time element. As we sag, Dredd sags and one of these days you can be certain he'll go the way of all flesh. So how will he meet his untimely demise? Choking on a hottie? Dog vulture? Mutant potato? In a hail of bullets or just tripping over? WHY DID YOU HAVE TO WEAR YOUR BOOTS SO TIGHT, DREDD?!

There will be a GN straight from the nerve centre for the winner of course, and one for Tharg's Choice - and there will also be a bonafide 2000 AD droid choosing their favourite entries! All entries will be viewable here, on our dedicated FB page, and also on the official 2000 AD Tumblr and Twitter!

Rules for the art comp are these:

- It must fit the theme.

- You can enter as many times as you like but bear in mind it will split your vote so it may not be worth it.

- All entries have to be constructed specifically for this competition - so nothing you've done for anything else.

- You can enter either here or by directly putting it on our FB wall here: https://www.facebook.com/2000adartcomp/

YOU HAVE UNTIL THE 28TH OF AUGUST WHEN WE SHALL JOIN THE VOTING CHOIR INVISIBLE

Before you shell out money to have this story drawn, though, I'd very closely check the contract with Markosia. It would be a pity if, after using your own money to help get this into print, you then discovered you had less of a stake in its ownership than you thought.

Those things are wordier than the Chilcot report   :-X

Blimey Bat King that was an eye-opener. Glad you're still with us sir and that it won't be too long before you're bedecked in cosplay and back amongst us with your review pamphlets!

Horrible.  Fuck ISIS and their followers.

There is currently no link between radical Islam and the perpetrator.

The harrowing incident appears at this point still to be completely random. Neighbours and officials have said he has "no known links" but what bothers me is that everyone has made a huge assumption that he's radicalised simply because he's called Mohamed. I was on a building site today and the builder's were all like "they're at it again". There's something deeply troubling about this whole episode, not just the grim facts of it all, but the assumptions too. Leapt to not just by yourself Jayzus but by officials and individuals worldwide. Where are we going...

What about me questioning his vote being elitist crap? Was that an hilarious wang innuendo too?

What about me having done a good job revitalizing the comp but it "losing it's heart" if I dare try to moderate it in any way? Was that some kind of cunning cock joke?

You guys are expert pushers. Consider me pushed.

I quit. Or shall I say "I'm ejaculating myself from this role"

It HAS been a phenomenal month, and I appreciate the kind words over it but this slow growth comes from support of new talent and the three people that wasted their votes in protest and the person on FB (since the morning has blocked me  :o ) who felt the need to imply I'd somehow altered the rules "to fuck Pete over" have just left a really bitter taste in my mouth. When you pour so much of your time into something like this for four years you can.... lose perspective.  :-\

So I apologise if I've offended anyone or caused undue alarm, I don't intend to leave for the time being and  I'm not in favour of making this an utterly po-faced affair but do just bear in mind that now we share entries over on the official 2000 AD Tumblr and a lot of them now come from FB exclusively - the warped community of our little forum doesn't exactly translate out there and those excited new folk watching the votes come in might have been a bit like "uh, why are they voting for this cock thing instead of anything that's there?" - and also therefore people unconnected to our hilarious cynical japery might see those protest votes and think I've genuinely done something draconian like refuse an entry for censorship reasons and accuse me of stuff. Which is pretty horrible.

I'm not offended by the content. He's chosen to take "Chopper" as slang for willy, I've taken it for what the actual fucking theme was which was Marlon "Chopper" Shakespeare. So it didn't fit the theme, it didn't count. I know this is clearly a deeply confusing distinction but honestly when I was running through a new summary of the rules for the Tumblr with Molcher I poo-pooed having to clarify "it must fit the theme" in the rules because I made the bizarre assumption people could differentiate between words.

Never thought my tenure on the comp would end because of some willies but here we all are.

I wuz robbed!

Hardly. I mean your entry wasn't even on-theme and you've had people harping on about it, ruining their votes to protest its removal and someone accusing me of "changing the rules to fuck you over" on FB today. So not only has your entry made far bigger impact than any of the others but the stupidity of peoples reactions to its removal made me genuinely consider if its worth running this competition at all. Is that a better prize than a GN?

Perhaps!

From James Newell via an enquiring FB user simply called Halo Jones:

Quote"The Ballad of Halo Jones Book 4" or what might have been...

Where did she go... she went out.

Alan Moore & Ian Gibson's seminal 80s 2000 AD masterpiece Halo Jones was notable for many things, not least of which was that it was never finished. Moore & Gibson both have ruminated in the decades since of where she might have gone - Moore expressing several times he was keen to continue her adventures into much later life. Where would you have her go next?

There will be a GN straight from the nerve centre for the winner, and one for Tharg's Choice - and there will also be a bonafide 2000 AD droid choosing their favourite entries! All entries will be viewable here, on our dedicated FB page and on the official 2000 AD Tumblr!!

Rules for the art comp are these:

- For this comp especially but generally for all future comps be RESPECTFUL of the source material, needlessly explicit entries will not be tolerated.

THARG'S CHOICE goes to BRENDAN MEACHEN

...and our Droid's Choice this month comes from 2000 AD art dynamo and co-creator of modern classic Kingdom: RICHARD ELSON

QuoteI've been following the entries as they came in and there were a couple of stand-out pieces for me but I'd like to mention a few others that I really enjoyed first.

Flight to the Death by Andy Lambert really appealed to me as it illustrates a scene from the first issue of 2000AD that I ever bought. I've always been a massive Brendan McCarthy fan and I loved his giant, mutant birds.

I really liked the Moebius tribute by Bhuna and Neil McClements - Brian Corocoran's action shot - Jan Lyew captures a real attitude and relationship between the characters of Dredd and Chopper in his pic - Uwe de Witt's very strong run of entries, especially the 1st and 4th - Great to see 'the' Steve Baskerville (who inked me on a Tyranny Rex strip back in the 90s) making an appearance and Mark Higgins' excellent young Chris Weston look-a-like Chopper (really nice lighting and sense of structure on that upper leg in particular).

My two favourite pieces were Shaolin Monkey's sculpture of Will Simpson's design for the mad-robot-chef Cookie (inspired work of a great character that for some reason makes me smile every time I look at it) and the action packed epic that is James Newell's Midnight Surfer. James' piece just takes the top spot for me. Really strong composition/lighting and full of great ideas: - Dredd merging with the buildings of Mega City 1, the wake of Chopper's board merging with the flash highlight on Dredd's visor, Chopper escaping the walls of the city - symbolised by the towering letters of the words Midnight Surfer. Powerful stuff. A really well thought out and executed illustration that tells a story in a single image. Great work James.

There were some really excellent entries here. I can't believe the amount of time and effort so many people put in to making this such a strong month. Thanks to you all for making this such an enjoyable competition to follow. I look forward to seeing more great artwork in the coming months,
