The original draft had more swears but I calmed down a bit :)

Don't get me started on the issue where Flash Thompson loses his legs in Iraq...

That reviewer sounds like a bit of a pillock. My favourite description of Future Shocks was Christopher Nolan when he called them little Twilight Zones. They were always an integral part of the prog and I'm pleased they still are. Pretty much anything that isn't Wagner Dredd gets labelled as filler sometimes and thats a shame.

I swear by Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide, my battered 1997 edition is always nearby. It has informative 100-ish word reviews of about 18,000 films and an actor and director guide at the back. It is quite American in it's outlook, and uses US names (La Haine is listed as Hate) but usually has a listing to help you out (Matter of Life and Death-see Stairway to Heaven etc.)
But it does have a picture of Leonard Maltin on the front, he's no George Raft :)

Books & Comics / Amazing Spider-Rant
04 December, 2008, 03:44:15 PM
I've just read the Amazing Spider-Man Annual featuring the shocking truth about Jackpot (she used DRUGS to get her powers, so she has to DIE) and there's a scene where Spidey just pops in for a little help from Reed Richards. No mention of how Spidey is a wanted criminal and Reed was the Mengele to Iron Man's Hitler in the Civil War. Nice that they've made up and everything, but this bubble universe Spidey seems to be trapped in is doing my nut in.

There has been vague talk that it's all going somewhere, but I'm on the brink of giving up reading ASM. One More Day was even shitter than you've probably heard, but  Brand New Day has for the most part been fun and exciting, with Dan Slott in particular writing some good stuff. It's the inconsistency that is driving me mad.  BAH HUMBUG.

Thanks for listening :)

Nice! I liked the half Lovecraft half Clarice Cliff cover image the other week too!

PS Everyone knows Boba Fett's second cousin is called Pedro Fett. For shame.

I'm on the brink too I'm afraid, I still have a lot of good will towards the show but the last few episodes have been arse water. I don't feel like this season is going anywhere.

Did Raider really have to ram the bomb, couldn't he have just chucked a tin of peas at it to get the same result? (I'm assuming he had no projectile weapons)

Gunstar Heroes it was not.

Books & Comics / Re: Batman RIP? (Spoilers)
Oh yeah, she was the one that said "Now do you get it?" last issue, cheers Bongo.
I think comics are only as niche as the direct market makes them personally, but then mr mythical casual reader would probably buy it off ebay* these days anyway instead of looking for their local comic shop. But just appealing to this bloke leads to stuff like Space Girls and Blair 1. Just a bit more accessibility would be nice. Half of the time I read a DC book and feel like I've missed an issue.

* Unless it's a highly collectible back issue by now :)
It was the identity of the Black Glove that had me avoid the tinternet all week until I could read it, which you may have gathered is left unclear. Is he really Thomas Wayne? Or Mangrove Pierce pretending to be Thomas Wayne? Or The Devil pretending to be Mangrove Pierce and/or Thomas Wayne?
The problem is this clearly isn't the end of the story, even though it's been marketed that way by DC. Christ knows what someone who loved Dark Knight and read about this issue so bought it at lunchtime will think of it.
I had no idea until today that Dr Hurt and the Space Medicine experiment, Thomas Wayne's Batman costume etc. are actually real comics from the 50s. DC could have put out a cheap reprint of all this stuff and the Zur Enn Ahrrr story, (call it Black Glove Origins or something) but that would probably make sense. You shouldn't need an encyclopaedic knowledge of Batman history to understand it, but it helps! (see also Final Crisis, every other book DC publishes)
I have really enjoyed his run on Batman, and thinking back to the three ghosts, the issue set in the future with Damian, Joe Chill in Hell, it's all been just this one story all along.
I'm going to re-read them tomorrow and pay more attention this time :)

It is an intriguing and exciting comic that has been growing on me a lot today. But like Flavor Flav said: Don't believe the hype.

PS I still don't quite get the significance of the red and black, can anyone enlighten me? Was it just a reference to Joker and his binary poison?
