Interesting bit of post-modern writing, that, with it's hilarious "Tharg and the droids are just a humourous fiction" gag.

It's true that PJ has no motive for wanting dominion over others.  It's only when he feels slighted, or if he has no personal wealth, that he tends to go on murdering sprees.

However, with Dredd, it's personal, and those around Dredd become targets which don't obviously further PJ's machinations.  Wasn't the robot roc just a slap in the face?

Of course, his motive may all along simply to have been to become anonymous once again.

As a citizen of MC-1, somebody's bound to annoy him at some point in the future.  He'll murder them, then the law will get involved and hence more conflict with Justice Department will ensue.  It's not unreasonable to figure that the only way he'll ever be free of the judges is to gain power over them, by whatever means.

I've never been much good at predicting Wagner, though.

I thought it was perfectly done.  As I mentioned on the Meg 234 review thread, this kept us guessing to the end, as it would have been a perfect time for PJ to lose.

I'm glad he didn't, and I expect there'll be more.  Wagner is famous for his extended build-ups, so who knows, maybe Maybe is destined to be a far larger threat to MC-1 than his past endeavours would suggest.

(Of course, it probably won't involve him building an army of giant stompy robot bugs, but that's life.)

In order, worst to best (although only Shakara showed any real class):

Atavar XXV
You spin me right round, baby, right round in circles, like a record with a scratch in it.

Judge Dredd: Blood Trails
The script really picked up this week, with Dredd back on form:  endangering Vienna just to try and get a scoop on the bad guys (much more like it).  Loved the perps driving off the bridge.

Shouldn't someone arrest those two jimps for impersonating Giant and Guthrie?  Maybe it's a red herring, but it now seems obvious that Guthrie is for the chop.

Future Shorts
I got the "fart" joke:  but when I was playing arcade games it was 3-letters only:  so lots of CIA and KGB.

Sinister Dexter: Dodgy Accent To Kal Cutter
If one has to stop every frame and spend ages translating dodgy phonetics written in english, doesn't that completely ruin the flow of the story?  Yes, it does.  And it's about as funny as "'Ello 'Ello", which wasn't.

Crabapplistics Inc.
What a crappy cover.  Verse looks great, but the monster is all blurry, where it would have been groovy to see his kilt and monster sporan in all their glory, plus the mouth and the tusks and so on.  Boo.  Looks good from a distance only.

Liked the "various attempts to kill boar-demon" bit.

Shakara: The Assassin
More, please.

:: "Nick Razor"

Nick Rivers: Hillary, that's an unusual name.

Hillary Flammond:  It's a German name. It means, she who's bosoms defy gravity.  Nick...that's a nice name, what does it mean?

Nick Rivers: Oh I don't know, my father thought of it while he was shaving.

From urbandictionary.com:

troll
One who posts a deliberately provocative message to a newsgroup or message board with the intention of causing maximum disruption and argument.

One who purposely and deliberately (that purpose usually being self-amusement) starts an argument in a manner which attacks others on a forum without in any way listening to the arguments proposed by his or her peers. He will spark of such an argument via the use of ad hominem attacks (i.e. 'you're nothing but a fanboy' is a popular phrase) with no substance or relevence to back them up as well as straw man arguments, which he uses to simply avoid addressing the essence of the issue.

A person who, on a message forum of some type, attacks and flames other members of the forum for any of a number of reasons. A real troll usually flames threads without staying on topic, unlike a "Flamer" who flames a thread because he/she disagrees with the content of the thread.

Trolls are people who flame the posters themselves, they flame because of rank, previous disagreements, sex, status, ect.

Trolls MUST NOT be confused with Flamers, who attack threads based on thier content or lack thereof.

A dumbass who makes idiotic posts in message boards newsgroups for the sole purpose of pissing people off, often lacking in intelligence. Sometimes compared to people who pass you by on the sidewalk then grab you in inappropriate places.

Akira is a good place for pleasing sound effects:  in fact, on a second read-through, ignoring the dialogue and just reading the SFX isn't half bad.

Special mention to the first series of Shimura, with it's shaped SFX - a "boom" sphere, I seem to recall.

Favourite of all time:  "THWOOP! THWUP! THWUP!" from the onomatopoetically named thwup guns in Strontium Dog:  Portrait of a Mutant.

Curious:  are the SFX all written by the writer, or do the artists and letterers get in on the act by adding their own?

Help! / Re: Total War time reference.........
28 June, 2005, 03:13:48 AM
Was it the first ever Anderson Psi story (where she releases the Dark Judges) where she was in direct continuity with Judge Dredd?

In Anderson Psi, the Dark Judges did for most of a crock block, and in the subsequent issue, Judge Dredd was on clean-up detail at said block.

You can see why they play it looser than that most of the time:  continuity wrangles aren't payed as much attention by the creators (it's been reported) as they are by the fans.  Fair enough, really, as that way leads to the dark side.

It doesn't get mentioned a lot, to be fair.  Used to be in every profile of Dredd in every annual and sci-fi special going (or did it?).

I still forget how many years ahead of us he is:  is it 120?  Something like that.
