Hey - 3rd time lucky and all that.

If only we could edit our own messages, I could easily have fixed the first of the 3 posts it took me to get that right.

As for "incompetently done", we all make mistakes, shaz, or were you born perfect?

I'll replace those large images with small ones - that much I can do.

The cover of prog 182 (note the very normal looking blocks compared to later Block Mania designs):

The 'teaser cover of prog 229 (showing the judge force that turns up in episode 1 of Block Mania):

The wraparound cover for Prog 236 (quite surreal as Dredd is standing astride a block):

That would be Prog 182's one-off "Block War" (which is the first Dredd story after The Judge Child quest and features a stunning cover in which he shouts "These blocks are under arrest!")

Stallone tried to mimic this scene in the movie but it came out as "Muh muhfflah bluh uhh!"  And then he took his helmet off and snogged Hershey!  Oh fuck, I'm in a bad mood now.

Review
Wonderful opening episode, from the wraparound cover by Bolland to the centrespread splash (both depicting unbridled chaos) to the cliffhanger closing frame, with a handful of judges facing 6 blocks worth of insanity.

The juxtaposition of the ultra-violent cover & centrespread with the first black & white frame of Melda Dreepe works well:  check out her bunny shoes!

I agree with other posters that the concentration on the cits, and their ingrained weirdness, is great.  I love the reasons given for choosing sides as well (eg "Uh, I've got a slight fancy for Blyton?").

The Judge force reflects a teaser-cover given a few progs earlier and (I think) is the first introduction of that style of hover pat wagon.

Nerd Watch
Episode 1:
Visible on opening splash: Max Jaffa & Fred Gee
Side A: Dan Tanna & Betty Crocker
Side B: Enid Blyton, Rikki Fulton & Henry Kissinger
Side C: Pancho Villa

Armament:
Cits: hand guns, smoke grenades, blunt objects & harsh language.
Judges:  Lawmasters & Pat Wagons (with riot foam).

The short-lived and infrequent "Tales From Mega-City One" dealt with ordinary cits, as I recall.

As did The Helltrekkers, of course.

I would, but I just re-read it two days ago because I wanted to check how many episodes it took to do the [spoiler] with [spoiler] doing the famous [spoiler].

I couldn't believe it.

The kickroms are rather tricky to find:  lots of places to sell them but it might (if I were that way inclined) take, say, 10 minutes to find a free download from google.

I don't know if this was the case in the two movies you cite, but often actors are contractually obliged to "big up" a movie during the press-hype phase (technical term).

So, if they say it's shite BEFORE the cinema going public realise it to be the case, they could be (legally) responsible for any loss.

Tis a fecked up world, and no mistake.

Help! / Re: Identifying artists & writers?...
28 February, 2005, 09:53:07 PM
I'm getting conflicting information on that one:

http://members.fortunecity.com/ukko/creators.htm#garres_r

says:

"T.B. Grover A penname for John Wagner and Alan Grant"

(As does www.2000ad.nu/linksproject/, http://www.dcs.gla.ac.uk/ftp/pub/SF-Archives/Misc/SF_Encyclopedia-corrections.html and various others).

However, several sources also say that Wagner used the pseudonym when writing alone as well.

The truth is out there...
