Aw, fuck!

There's a really great video about a mural he did in 1975, in Partick, where he had to come to terms with the locals and their spray cans.

I saw his exhibition in Glasgow last year, where I got to see this full size and with the missing half:

Quote from: The Legendary Shark on 30 November, 2023, 09:11:50 PMAs to Funt's accusation that the speaker minimises the Holocaust, this is not so.

Yes, it is so:

bringing up the Holocaust as it carries

out a holocaust against Palestinians

From Wikipedia: "Nazi Germany and its collaborators systematically murdered some six million Jews across German-occupied Europe"

From Wikipedia: "Since the start of the ongoing war, as of 18:00 on 23 November, according to the Government Media Office in Gaza, more than 14,800 people have been killed in Gaza"

So, he's either saying that the murder of six millions Jews (with no provocation whatsoever) is the same as a complicated conflict in which about 15 thousand people in Gaza have been killed, or that six million Gazans have died, or that only 15 thousand Jews died in The Holocaust. He's not really clear - which is why hyperbole is such a shit way to debate anything - but especially on a topic as heated as this one.

He's minimizing The Holocaust. You're spreading that around. Please - just drop it!

Yeah, I see what you mean. I know there is a lot of common ground - nobody is keen on the spilling of innocent blood, I'm sure. I expect we're all in agreement on that.

It's that being a launch pad to open the door to other, more hateful stuff, that I'm suggesting isn't a palatable (or, perhaps, even legal) thing to be doing.

Perhaps we can all agree just to change the subject?

Well, that's the problem, right there - it isn't. For example - he equates The Holocaust with current events. That is minimizing the extent of The Holocaust, which is an anti-Semitic trope.

(Note - I'm not saying he doesn't also make valid points about current events, but he does also minimize The Holocaust.)

Flagging this up to moderation - is it really okay to propagate this stuff on here?

I realize that news about the Israel-Hamas conflict is terribly upsetting. I'd caution against throwing out content, though, that sways into dangerous polemical territory. I wouldn't like to see more threads locked.

(I'm deliberately avoiding pointing out the specific ways in which the video that was linked-to crosses lines - but it does. I just don't want to get bogged down in specifics because I think that's exactly the sort of debate that would probably result in flames and thread locks - given past experience on the board.)

Hi Jade - sorry to hear that you're cold! I was once living in Halls of Residence and because my mum's an emotion-vampire that struggles with acute jealousy, I had decided not to visit her that Christmas. I did, though, still have a demented sense of loyalty, and so had also refused an offer to spend Christmas with my dad - because I knew she'd hate that and make noises about it. So, I stayed in the Halls. You weren't supposed to, though, so they'd turned the heating off to save money. So I was wrapped up in all my clothes, breath steaming, watching shit on the tele and all alone with nobody to talk to. I'd told myself beforehand that it wouldn't be so bad - but it was fucking shit. So, I'm sorry to hear you're cold.

Not that you asked for any help - but I'm sorry as well that my empathy probably isn't any.

The fourth strand might be the survivors from Transpolar, who were planning to nuke Justice Department when we last saw them (in prog 2230).

I'm a bit behind in my prog-reading but had been catching onto a few "needs a re-read" type commments regarding The Fall of Deadworld, so I thought I'd put my money where other people's mouths were and went back and re-read the entire saga.

The re-read helped bring all those disparate elements together into a cohesive whole - but I've been a fan of the story all along. On a week-by-week, I could see how it could be difficult, because there are lots of characters, and sometimes you get drip-fed their names, even - or, to put it another way, the storytelling forces us to pay attention.

This episode had a great piece of 2000 AD in it, though (see pic below), and it's a bit sad that folk are so down on it when there's so much fun to be had. Ava Eastwood is this dimension's Dredd (although, given her extra-judicial liaison with Leigh, she's also a bit Rico-esque) - so her fishing out the Sov commander and then eliminating her is entirely in-character.

Summary: definitely enjoyed the re-read, and great to see this back in the prog.

I spat my tea at this bit:

I missed that one! (No wonder George can't write another Game of Thrones book - too much continuity spaghetti to unravel.)

Does Deadworld in the printed prog also have no title, credit card etc?

The Dredd was really good - but I have some nit-picks:

1. "AFTER MAYBE POISONED ME" is an inadvertent garden path sentence because it's not abundantly clear that "MAYBE" is a name without context, which doesn't necessarily kick-in until after the first scan. Not a huge deal, but maybe Maybe would be easier to contextualize if the M was emboldened.

2. "TOOK DOMINO AND HER TEAM A WHILE TRACK HIM DOWN" - missing "TO".

3. "THE LAST I SAW OF GRAVES WAS ON TITAN BEFORE THE SOVS ARRIVED" - the Sovs didn't arrive on Titan, they arrived on Enceladus. Rob must know that, so this must have been a storytelling choice, but it grates a bit.
