I'm not sure whether it's Jungs sincronicity or whether it's God using co-incidence to speak to me but I've been thinking a lot about Frank Sidebottom lately.

A wikipedia search started by my interest in the Ruby Ridge seige led me to his Wiki entry. A request on MySpace led me to discovering his MySpace page. I pointed out the Oh Blimey Big Band mosaic by the door at Afflecks Palace to Nicky yesterday and commented on how odd it was that he used to present items on Granade Reports. Then I bought a Jon Ronson book and he tells the best annecdote about him ever.

So here it is.

The Best Frank Sidebottom Annecdote Ever.

Frank and his big band were supporting Gary Glitter on tour and were told they couldn't touch the hydraulic stage and couldn't sing any Gary Glitter songs.

Naturally Frank rose onto the stage on the platform singing 'Do you wanna be in my gang?' until he noticed Garys roadies barging through the audience. He legged it. They gave chase. Frank took the headpiece off and threw it through a door. The roadies got closer. He shrugged off his jacket and looked back. The roadies were nearly on him. He hurtled round a corner and slithered out of his suit pants, and ran on in just his underwear. Then he began to lose wind and the roadies caught up. He felt there hands on his shoulders and heard them snarl "Oy! You! Come here!". He turned to face them.

"Did you see where Frank Sidebottom went?" One asked.

Couple of suggestions, meant well, based on boarders comments and my own musings.

For a start there are a couple of biogs that people would like to see in more detail. Massimo Belardinelli and Ron Smith spring to mind. If we right them, will you print them Jonathon? Robby, Rufus, if you've not killfiled me and can read this, can you help here?

Secondly, in terms of supplimentary material there are no doubt lots of convention sketches that would be worth including and I'll muster up my hoard.

Just look at the Dante ones for instance...

General / Amazons cult authors
05 November, 2006, 07:52:52 AM
Whilst idly cliking links after trying to find another copy of the excellent anthology 'The Conan Doyle Stories' I clicked on the 'cult authors' link.

First up on the list is J.D.Salinger, and then there were all the usual suspects. Humter S. Thompson? Check! Douglas Coupland? Check! Irvine Welsh, J.G.Ballard, Brett Easton Ellis? Check, check, check! But there, before Ayn Rand and Jack Kerouac were a couple of names I wasn't expecting to see.

John Wagner and Alan Grant. Volume 5 of the Casefiles to be exact.

Now I'm not saying they don't deserve to be on the list, they should indeed, just that it was a surprise to see that book nestled alongside One flew over the cuckoos nest and The Catcher in the Rye.

Anyway, nowt much to say just thought I'd point it out. Rather tickled me after a nightshift to see them there. I quite like the idea of some psuedy intellectual buying it on a whim when browsing for Delta of Venus and reading The Apocalypse War without knowing what to expect.

Oh, and here's an expert from the review
"The subject of Nuclear war is handled maturely, creatively & with Dredd's typical black, ironic & very British humour that came to typify the series & make it truly stand out."

Fopp! in Manchester has the Complete Future Shocks for £9 as opposed to £12.99. I know there's a branch in London and presumably others so it might be worth checking it out. Get one for yourself and one for a kid this Christmas.

They have reduced price BPRD and Hellboy books as well as Loveless and Preacher. Go look.

General / Scriptshop script writing cabaret competition
02 November, 2006, 03:05:26 PM
Scriptshop are a Leigh, Lancashire, based group of writers who meet weekly to share newly written scripts, workshop them, and offer critiques, advice and support.

Scriptshop have recently recieved lottery fund money to organise a series of workshops and caberets for the performance of new short play scripts. An open submission policy will choose the scripts which are to be publicly performed by proffesional actors.

Scriptshop are looking for 10 minute scripts featuring no more than 2 actors (2 female, 1 male). If you have want to enter the competition you also have the opportunity to take part in workshops leading up to the performances. The workshops and performances will take place around the Wigan Metropolitan Borough.

There will be three performances and we are looking to perform 12 different scripts at each of the cabarets so there are 36 chances to get your work acted before an audience.

The first workshop will take place in Leigh on December the 9th 2006, contact me for details if you wish to attend. The first cabaret is going to take place at the start of 2007 and the scripts submitted for the first cabaret have to be recieved by December 27th.

The first caberet will have the theme 'haunted' (with the theme for the second cabaret to be 'Life Sentence') so if you have an idea for a short play on that theme that fulfills the loose criteria then please submit it to
SCRIPT SHOP,
PO BOX 115,
LEIGH,
WN7 2WU.

The scripts will be chosen by an adjudicating panel comprising a dramaturge, the performance director, and a member of scriptshop. Feedback will be provided so an S.A.E. would be appreciated.

Off Topic / Womens boots related advice needed
28 October, 2006, 09:25:25 PM
Howdo. I am, it's fair to say, not bad at buying pressies as long as I take advice from experts. It doesn't take much effort to listen out for hints and then go and ask people for advice based on those hints. So...people of the board advise me.

My girlfriend likes shoes. She particularly likes Victorian size boots. She likes rock music and punky fashions. She's a UK size 8. I have not much money. Where's the best place online for me to look for boots, how much money should I be spending to get a decent pair, what sort is particularly nice.

Help me out here people.

Help! / Two requests
22 October, 2006, 03:51:38 PM
Firstly does anyone have a copy of the 'Seasonal Food Guide' from Yesterdays (21/10/06) Grauniad that they don't want? I'll pay postage.

Also, and this is a bigger favour, could anyone colour this image and remove the dedication from the top. It's for something I'm thinking of making, and whoever does it will get one too.

Sorry, cheers, thanks.http://myspace-540.vo.llnwd.net/00730/04/51/730761540_l.jpg">

Off Topic / The calender of the trivial.
19 October, 2006, 11:23:31 PM
The ilogical follow up to the 'fictional character/birthday sharing thread'.

In an overambitious attempt at creating something useless I suggest we try to find a weird fact or piece of stupid trivia connected to each day of the year. I suspect no-one else will have a crack, and any of us that do will get bored quickly and not reach February but we'll see what happens -

1st January - 1927 - Turkey adopted the Gregorian calendar. In Turkey that year December 18, 1926 was  immediately followed by January 1, 1927 to facilitate the change over. Must have pissed off the Christmas Card makers of Turkey...

Megazine / Meg 251 - Fiend or Foe.
16 October, 2006, 04:27:44 PM
Cover - I should like this but...I don't. I don't like the golem desing and it's too dark. I always enjoy covers taht allow other artists to interpret the characters and I reckong Cam Kennedy could have scored a classic with the list of ingredients.

Intro - Right on. Although Matt agreeing with Tharg is no real surprise.

Dredd - The bees knees, the cats whiskers AND the dogs bollocks. I really enjoyed this episode. Don't care if it's three or three hundred parts long, this is a classic.

Fiends - just sort of is. Still Da Bishs best script to date. After Soul Sisters.

Siddhe - I enjoy the strip but this has been going on forever.

D'issy interview? Oooooh.

General / Ah! That's who Dante reminds me of.
30 September, 2006, 05:11:30 PM
Suddenly realised this morning who Dante, as drawn by John Burns reminds me of.

Nikolai Dante - http://www.execulink.com/~kbrannen/photof05.gif">
#120
Cover - Meh. My eyes slipped off it without noticing it.

Ooooh. Line up change. Effective. Chiarascuros first episode was equally effective. Interesting set up, lets see what follows.

Dante - Still glad he's back. Great last page. Suddenly 6 weeks feels like a long time.

Stone Island - This is the way the thrill ends, not with a bang but a whimper. Disappointed with this and not really fussed if we see it again. I'd like more Intercepter though. The first Edginton script I've not loved.

Dredd - Now that's a mutant. Masterful storytelling. I await twists and turns with interest.
