General / The February Competition!
02 February, 2003, 05:42:11 AM
And another competiton begins...

This time you have to pair up two 2000 A.D characters that you think would be the ideal couple and explain why you think they are a match made in heaven.

The answer the judge decides his or her favourite will win a signed print, donated by Jock, and either a copy of Prog 1280 signed by Simon Fraser, Steve Yeowell, other artists and John Wagner or a piece of original Mike Collins art from the Daily Star Dredd.

The winner will be announced on Valentines Day, giving us all an excuse not to go out. Why would you want to spend time with a lover when you could sit in waiting to see who won?

Post your entires as replies to this thread.
Have fun, keep it clean.

General / Letters, Pray?
15 January, 2003, 03:33:17 PM
I'm enjoying reading the old progs I just bought and one reason is for the letters. So far I've found Wake's autobiography, P.V.S. disguised as a monk, Oddboy praising 'Killer', and in one prog Si and Logan being sarcastic about Slaine.

So if you've had a letter printed let me know where so I can flick straight to it.

Cheers.

This truth we, the message board irregulars, hold to be self evident -

We want a collected edition of David Bishops 'Thrill Power Overload' series from the Megazine. Extended if possible. We are willing to buy it as and when you make it available.

Signed
David X. Brunt.

(Come on people, add your names under this. Don't make me look any dumber than my hair-cut already does.)

Very pleased to find the latest Meg in amongst all the threatening letters this morning. New Meg and the day off work? Nice. What with breaks only to make more cups of tea it's taken me two hours to get through the latest issue, and it was well worth it. Good issue.

Dredd - Nice to see more from your man Rennie. Another good script, one that we'll hopefully see elements of in future issues. And another reference to Gil Gerrard... Gordons interview was fun to read as well, especially his list of annoyances.

FireStarter - Not what I was expecting, and the art isn't as bad as the previews implied. Pleasantly surprised by this one. Nice vista of the Meg as well.

Devlin - Always a pleasure to see the Vaticans finest back in action. More set up but it looks like this one will be fun. Dev's rematch with the man who made him what he is should be interesting.

GOLD! Slaine - Not read this before, looks like it'll be good, but whether my interest will stretch 6 months is another matter...

Darkies Mob - Interesting stuff. This seems the best use of 'Gold' to me, stuff by familiar creators that won't be found in back issues.

T.P.O. - Covering a period that I've been waiting for, with some interesting stuff, particularly regarding Sin Dex.

Family - Good stuff, especially the art. Prefer this over Bendatti any day.

Black Sidhe - Perhaps too early to judge, but a nice opening episode (though proof positive that no-one can write about an asian family without mentioning arranged marriages). Nice art, I think with more episodes under its belt this could be good.

Sin Dex - They've finally made it into the Meg. Just what you were all waiting for. Well, I liked it.

Ooookay. Apart from the Collected edition and the stories after Prog 2002 I hadn't read any Dante until a fortnight ago. Even then I'd only read the first few. Tonight I gorged myself on a goodly chunk, and I have to say I'm loving this strip.

As I read more and more Nikolai endeared himself to me more and more. He's crept up behind and overtaken Johnny Alpha in the second favourite character stakes.

Signs are that they are going to start releasing collections in the 'Rain Dogs' style. If they do this will be one of the few strips I'd be prepared to buy even though I have the progs.

So here we go. Masses of big, red, shiney Spoilers.

Nikolai Dante/Romanov Dynasty - Impressive how the strip starts off running. The work that's gone into developing the ideas really pays dividends. I could see right away why this strip was recommisioned. From the moment Dmitri tells Dante how he was conceived I was rooting for him to be defeated.

Russias Greatest Love Machine - Yeah, follow the revelation that the lead is a product of rape with a sex comedy. The only mis-step in the series so far.

Gentleman Thief - Good stuff. Nice little romp, with a satisfying ending.

The Full Dante - Another odd one parter. And did no-one really notice that the wrong sibling had been drawn?

Moscow Duellists - Now that's better. Extremely funny, with some great moments. It also serves to introduce Dantes world and set up future plot moments. Nice ending with Jenna starting to see more to Dante. Frasers really getting into the swing of it now, the arts great.

Gulag Apocalyptic - Not really keen on this one. The art didn't seem to suit, and the story didn't seem to grow out of the characters or the set up. Still, it might link in later.

Trouble with Arbatovs/Cruel Brittania - Much better. Perhaps the one offs feel more fitting with Fraser on board?

The Great Game - Now this is fantastic. Laugh out loud funny, decent plot, and wonderful moments for the character. But it was pretty obvious that Eloise was doomed as soon as she was introduced.

Octobriana Seduction - Again funny, and Viktor is an intriguing character.

Masque of Dante/Moveable Feast/Tour of Duty - Good stories all, good way to meet the siblings. Liked the return of the Countess, and the church in M.F.

Cadre Infernale - Another one I really liked. Dante's moral reaction to the situations were fascinating, to me at least. There's something really creepy about the masks (especially when the msked revellers refuse to help the terrified woman) and the set up, nicely Hammer Gothic.

The Hunting Party - Possibly everyones favourite Sinister Dexter story. Liked Dantes deliberatley missing the animals he was supposed to be hunting. Says a lot about his character.

Fists of Fury - Another Arbatov. About time too. Basically one long fight scene, but the ending progresses the ongoing story well.

Last Dance of the Trans-Siberians - A brave thing to try, to tell a dance story in a static medium, but one that they pull of well. Really enjoyed this one. Charlie Adlard has drawn a few Dante strips by now, and has one of the best takes of the characters.

Cruel Seas - Dante once again stands up for the under-dog. What would be a story we've seen before is changed by the presence of Katarina Dante. Fascinating to meet her, and to see her reaction to the man Dante has become. Oh, and John Burns is great on this strip. He's an artist that I don't often think suits 'other peoples' characters, but he's perfect here.

Requiem for Lost Love - Dante punishes himself on the first anniversary of Eloise's death. A gentle story, with the sort of soppy ending that wouldn't have worked if Dante hadn't grown into a well rounded character.

I'm just saddened that I'm running out of Dante to read, but interested to see how the war will change things, and how they'll get to where I came in - Return of the Gentleman Thief.

Hmmm. Long review that. Doubt anyone has managed to get this far...

Yay. New Prog. I've missed these little fellas.

Cover - Looks as good as it did in the Prog 2003. Nice one.

Dredd - Lots of cast members introduced and a bit of forward motion. Looking good.

Cabalistics - Looking good. The cast are gathered together and the situation is delineated a bit more. And always nice to see Nicholas Courtney.

Slaine - Getting a bit silly, but still good. The art holds but I'm hoping he doesn't warp too much in this tale, as I don't like the way it's realised here. Why does Slaine get it's own credits box?

Sinister Dexter - Different type of story in the familiar style. Looks like it should be fun, but I don't think it's going to win over anyone that's gone off them.

Nikolai Dante - Hard to comment on this one but a nice opening part, will be interesting to see where this one goes.

Weather - Bitterly cold.

Anyway he's due to do a meet and greet at the Grosvenor Museum, Chester on Saturday 15th February. Noon onwards, ?3 a pop.

I'm hoping to go.

'All Creatures Great and Small' is on sale now. There was some confusion as to when it was coming out, so if you were looking for it late January it might well have sold out by then.

24 December, 2002, 12:31:03 AM
The editorial comment this week was 'TIME TO CHOOSE BETWEEN MEN AND FISH'. Obviously the struggle to returnt this board to a democracy is big news in the highlands and islands.

Also there was a headline 'BUDGIE WOULDN'T PLAY JOCKS GAME'. Having found Jock to be a thoroughly nice bloke at the con can I extend commiserations to him at the fact that his fun was spoiled by a winged kill-joy.

Classifieds / Zenith - Titan Books 1-5.
09 December, 2002, 01:50:22 AM
Howdo. Can't be bothered flogging these on E-Bay, so if anyone want's to make me an offer for the set then now's the chance.

1-3 are in good condition.
4-5 are in okay condition, not great but not falling apart either.

I don't want to split them, mainly because I've had an offer of ?50 for the set, but I'd rather sell it to a fan rather than a comic shop. If you're going to Dredd-con or Shed-con then I'll bring them down, which should save a bit of postage.

Oh, and if you want a description of the condition ask that nice 'Something Fishy' next time you bump into him.

General / SoWhat do they look like?
28 November, 2002, 06:22:26 AM
For no real reason I've always imagined that Gerry Finley-Day looks like Micheal Palin.

Research has proven that Si Spurrier looks like Will Young.

And I imagine that Dave Bishop looks like his photo in 'Comics International' but older.

So what do you imagine that the writers and artists of 2k look like? Or fellow board members for that matter.
