The answers a Yes, that would be fun. But I couldn't find your e-mail to reply. So I'm doing it here.

General / Train Tickets.
25 November, 2002, 04:13:10 AM
Just a quick reminder for anyone taking the choo choo to London that tickets are allready selling out.

I thought I'd be safe buying a ticket now but the train I wanted was sold out of cheap seats. It would have been an extra ?160 to make the journey when I wanted to.

So, unless you want to pay a fortune consider buying your tickets now.

Other Reviews / Get Karter!
22 November, 2002, 05:04:38 PM
I'll start off by saying that I was originally disappointed that the C.D.'s are going down to one every other month instead of monthly, but if it stops the delays that have been happening in the release of the C.D.'s then it's a good thing. But that isn't really anything to do with the actual C.D. has it?

I'll review it in two parts, the first part a general overview, and then a more SPOILER specific part, so be warned.

From the set-up in 'The Big Shot' and the cover blurb I'd got it into my head that this tale would be more of a gangster story than the family drama that it is. It's actually a relatively sleight story, but one with repurcussions for the characters involved.

It's a change of tone and style from earlier stories, slower and with less scenes. That works this time around because of the story they are telling but I wouldn't want to see too many C.D.'s like this. The link from 'The Big Shot' was appreciated but the tone is so different it was almost jarring, being a follow on from such a fun story, but that said I like the fact that links are being made between the C.D.'s, such as plot threads from 'The Killing Zone' being carried on here. Particularly nice is the fact that they are used in such a way that you don't need to have heard previous C.D.'s.

The regulat cast are fine, they're well in the swing of things by now. The performance I was most interested in though was bound to Trevor Littledale who plays Armitage. I wasn't expecting a John Thaw impersonation, but I'd assumed there'd be touches of Morse and Regan in the performance but it sounded a lot closer to Cary Grant than anyone else. Not a bad Armitage, but like Mark Gatis' Judge Death a valid interpretation, just not close to the way I'd imagined him to sound.

The thing that really grated for me was the score. As background mood setting it was fine, but for some reason when it was used to break scenes up I found it annoying. It also sounded like it was taken from the album 'Now that's what I call background music from a cheap Godfather rip-off movie #42' and make me think of anything but London. Bbut then what would? Chas and Dave play 'Run Dredd Run' in the background?

Overall I enjoyed 'Get Karter!' but would rather tales like this be the exception rather than the rule. And I'd be happy to hear Armitage in another adventure.

SPOILER SPECIFIC STUFF!

DEVONS DADDY LOOK AWAY NOW!

I find it hard to believe that the Judges hospital is bugged, but it's as good a way as any of recapping the dialogue from the end of 'T.B.S.'.

The revelations of Amy's family history are all well and good but wouldn't the Judges have found all this out when she tried to enroll at the academy, or do they not run checks? Now that events have come to an end with Amy I'm not sure whether we'll see her again. Hope so, but any appearance would have to build on the events or what would be the point of the whole C.D.

Oh, and the 'Big Finish Talks Back' section at the end was fun, but felt like a stop gap to lengten the C.D.s running time. At least we get to hear what da Bish sounds like.

Grief but I've gone on. Did anyone read this far? Why you fools, you've wastsed your precious life. You'll never get the time you wasted reading this back!

General / Returning soon...
19 November, 2002, 06:01:25 PM
This weeks comics revealed some strips that are returning. Interesting news to me.

Atavar II - A real surprise. Neither loved nor loathed the first one, but was certainly not expecting a sequal. Could go either way, but it should at least be interesting to see where it can go from here.

Red Seas - The subtitle of the story running now should have been a clue that it might be considered for return. Very glad that it's coming back, because I'm liking it a lot.

Bendatti Vendetta - Returning next summer. This hasn't grabbed me, but as the first tale is a scene setter it'll be interesting to see more, as we know the set up now. Reading the complete tale might make me keener to see more.

Young Middenface - Glad this is back, really enjoyed this tale. Where this tale goes next will be fun to see. Hope the art team is kept on.

And am I alone in thinking that more 'Scarlet Traces' would be nice, but unlikely?

General / Warning! May contain Death!
16 November, 2002, 03:13:19 PM
Got a little jiffy bag in the post this morning. Rightly assumed that it would be the Death key-ring that was offered with the subscription. What I didn't take into consideration was just how pointy it would be.

Stuffed my hand in to get it and pulled it out quickly. It had bitten me! There were two pin-pricks of blood on my index finger where the key-ring had got me. So a warning on the package might have been helpfull -

BEWARE DEATH! MAY BE HAZARDOUS TO HEALTH!

And I'm disappointed to see it's not the size of the photo in the advert.

Prog / 1317
11 November, 2002, 11:39:03 PM
New Prog.

Cover - like the losse art on the strip, but as a cover it's not quite right. Very little colour range either. Nice to see the series artist draw a cover though.

Dredd - Okay, but nothing special. Interesting to see Dredd in an official role for a change. This is obviously a part of the ongoing Orlock story. Interesting to see how this ties in.

Red Seas - I like this a lot. Are the crew all dead? How did Dancer escape? The Erebus stuff was a surprising twist.

Asylum - Still not hooked, but the cliff hanger was a good one. Art and story are fine, though.

Past Imperfect - A British tale. Nice. For a comic that has always been proud of it's uniquely British point of view it's odd that American History has been the focus of the first three. We have a rich and interesting history in Britain, let's see some more. Nice punch-line, great art.

Sin Dex - Good stuff. Glad to find out the reason for the whack, looks like things are coming to a head.

Good prog over all.

General / The Best of Judge Dredd - Volumes 1 and 2.
07 November, 2002, 07:54:23 PM
D.C. brought out a range of 'Best of' collections for various characters. I know we had the mags but never a book of the 'Best of' Dredd. To avoid the problem of mixing colour and black and white they could be divided into two books.

Any suggestions for stories that would have to be included in a Greatest Hits compilation?

To start the ball rolling I'd recommend 'Umpty Candy' for Vol. 1 and 'Blood and Duty' for Vol 2.

General / Hotel in London.
07 November, 2002, 02:33:49 AM
I have been recommended a hotel in London by family members so have booked a room for my visit to Dreddcon.

It's the GROVE HILL HOTEL, Woodford Green, London.
It's near a station, half an hour from central London.
Rooms from ?33 to ?45 a night.

Just thought I'd put this up in case anyone else was looking for somewhere.

News / My evil plan of the day.
30 October, 2002, 09:06:37 PM
Today I am forcing Puppies to read 'Return to Verdus!'.

Evil enough you might think. But yesterday I let them read 'Verdus' and they are expecting something of that standard!

Bwa-ha-ha-ha!!!! Nothing in the world can stop me now!!

'Verdus'. Isn't it great. Isn't it one of the most perfect examples of a collaboration between writer and artist in the history of comics? The ingenuity and imagination put into each design of each robot, the memorable characters, the playful narrative voice, the plot strong enough to sustain 22 episodes, the thrills, the wit, the humour, the wonder, the bravery to allow dark and threatening aspects of the story to exist side by side with the light and frivolous, the clear connection to that particular brand of literature exemplified by Rector Swifts book known as 'Gullivers Travels' and Lewis Carrolls 'Alices Adventures in Wonderland', the fact that it's a perfect strip to be read by kids and grown-ups alike.

Quite simply one of the best things 2K has ever produced. Among the very, very finest works that John Wagner and Ian Gibson have produced (and considering their back-catalogue that is not light praise...). Why isn't this in a collected edition yet? Why isn't there a copy in every library in the land? Why isn't this on the national curriculum?

General / 1315
28 October, 2002, 05:07:57 PM
Hmmm. Subscription was due to start next week, and the envelope says 1316 on it... Still never mind. Got my Prog early. Like that a lot.

Dredd - After stalling last week (nothing much happened in the last episode) the story picks up again. Looks interesting, I think I can see where it's going to go in the last part but trust in Wagner to put some surprises in.

Red Seas. Another strip turning up a notch. The Zombie onslaught is here. Some ingenious methods used to fight the Zombies off, which was nice. The art was by Steve Yeowell. Get used to me saying this for the rest of the run, but he is one of the very best comic artists going...

Asylum - Not particularly taken with this (not that I dislike it either), but this weeks episode was fun. Nice use of art to tell parts of the story.

Future Twister - Packed a lot of story into 5 pages, told it well. Nice twist, perhaps obscured by unclear art on what should have been a very clear panel to make things obvious. Liked it though.

Sin Dex - Finally converted to the art work. Didn't see what people were raving about until this week. I really liked the story too. Very funny in places. Read it twice in fact.

Cover - Not so keen, but it's okay. Not very eye catching though.

News / Christmas Reprint change shocker!
28 October, 2002, 03:28:08 PM
Apparantly due to legal problems they won't be able to print 'Fiends of the Eastern Frontier' so are going to use the 50 pages to re-print Sinister Dexter in 'Deaky Poobar, we barely knew ya!'.

Twice.

General / Glimmer Rats.
24 October, 2002, 12:21:45 AM
Read the majority of the collected edition. Stil not sure how I feel about it. The art is...different. Some times I really like it, sometimes it's off-putting. The story is fine - very similar to Bad Company - but fine enough. It seems, if anything, too short and could have been done being stretched over two runs, a welcome to hell series, and one where they go after the ear guy. But at least there's a strong forward momentum for the plot.

The thing is I've never heard the expression 'Rats chance in hell'. I've heard 'Snowballs chance in hell'. So why isn't it called 'Glimmer Snowballs'?

Hiya, anybody know where the Stronty Story in that special comes from? It's not listed by the special in question. I'm assuming it's from Starlord but I could be wrong.

General / The October Winner.
14 October, 2002, 05:32:42 AM
I'll announce this a little early because I'm working tomorrow. In the end it was too hard for me to judge, so I asked UKdane to do it instead. He thought long and hard and chose a fitting winner.

So, the winner is...
damnandblast for his Dredd Ditty.

When the clapping has died down come and choose your prize from the following -
1) Nikolai Dante - The Romanov Dynasty Collection.
2) A limited edition Bison action figure.
3) A Sternhammer silencer.

e-mail me your choice and adress and I'll get it off to you as soon as I can. Congratulations!

Hiya, anyone going to the convention tomorrow (Manchester University, Oxford Road - 11 A.M., ?3.50, Alan Grant, John Smith, Carl Critchlow...) if you fancy saying hi ask the guys on the Milennium Comics stall to point me out to you. I'll be the overweight one with a bad hair-cut and carrying lot's of comics.
