Film & TV / Re: Doctor Who/2000ad Connection.....

Oooh, now I wouldn't say they were the absolute best. Among the very best, without doubt, but some of the 8th and 5th Doctor strips challenge them for the crown.

To counter that argument Run, don't walk!, to your nearest comic shoppe when it comes out. Frobisher, The Doctor, Ridgeway? Classic.

Suggestions / Re: No Title

It's been done before, way back in the Armoured Gideon days. Led to a Ridgeway Stronty, I believe.

I'd be interested to see what John Smith would do with Stronty. He's written decent Dredd and Rogue Troopers, geting the characters right and putting them in Smithy style weird situations. Lets see Johnny and Wulf step into the Spot-Shatterlight.

Film & TV / This can't possible fail..

Hands up everyone who liked Spaced. Right, good. Now who thought it needed to be more American? Oh.

Here's what Variety had to say about the upcoming traumatastic convert.

"Fox has locked its orbit on "Spaced," a U.K. comedy being retooled for American auds.
Net has given a put pilot order to the project, originally created by the "Shaun of the Dead" and "Hot Fuzz" team of Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright (as well as Jessica Stevenson). "Will & Grace" alum Adam Barr is set to adapt the show for the U.S.

"Spaced" revolves around a young man and woman (played by Pegg and Stevenson in the U.K. version) who pose as a couple in order to rent a cheap apartment. They're soon surrounded by colorful neighbors and eventually begin a flirtation.

The single-camera comedy is particularly known in Britain for its frenzied use of pop culture references -- particularly when it comes to sci-fi, horror, comicbooks and videogames.

Wonderland Sound and Vision is behind the project, as well as Warner Bros. TV (where Wonderland is based) and Granada, which holds format rights. Wonderland TV prexy Peter Johnson first discovered the show while talking to someone at a comicbook store; as a "Shaun of the Dead" fan, he quickly looked to seal the rights.

Wonderland's McG and Granada's Robert Green will exec produce alongside Barr; the extent of Pegg's and Wright's involvement is still unclear. But Johnson likens the effort to NBC's adaptation of Ricky Gervais' and Stephen Merchant's "The Office" for the U.S., with Greg Daniels in charge.

"Spaced" has been nominated for a BAFTA and an Intl. Emmy Award, among other honors. Channel 4 aired seven episodes of season one in 1999 and another seven segs of a second season in 2001.

Barr's other credits include "The New Adventures of Old Christine" and "Desperate Housewives." "

And here's what Edgar Wright had to say...

"The interesting part of that is, no-one has been in touch with me at all. Haven't deigned to get in contact. So my involvement is indeed very unclear.

P.S. I can confirm too, that Simon was never contacted either. I don't really want to get involved at all, but it infuriates me that they would a) never bother to get in touch but still b) splash me and Simon's names all over the trade announcements and infer that we're involved in the same way Ricky & Steve were with The Office.

Also, it's worth stressing that I will not be profiting from this reversion, nor do they have to get permission from me to make it.

One more thing...

I'm calling for everyone to refer to the U.S. version of Spaced as "McSpaced" from now on.

I can't think of a better distillation of the whole idea."

There's a tale from an annual involving four people trapped on a hostile planet without food who fight to the death for a vegetable they find that shook me as a kid in one of my rare childhood contacts with 2k.

Almaranda also disturbed me for all sorts of reasons much later.

Recently the Ewing (?) and Reardon 'Scene of the Crime' tale was magnificent.

Apologies for the tone of the title thread, it was hard to think of something not too silly and not too po-faced.

A mate and I were looking for new hobbies recently. They had to be easy, typically British, and not too populist. Because we're both snobs. Sealed Knot reconstruction was considered but I snubbed that on the grounds that it sounded scary and dangerous.

The following report confirms my suspicions and reminds us all of the danger of having someones eye out. Just thought I put it up to get responses from the boarders that do this sort of thing. Is this common?

The cover is pretty much a stock pose thang, similar to a Best of 2k (it had the V.C.s and some Dredd in) but to my eyes Boos use of colours makes it less flat and static, there's a warmth and reality in it that really works for me.

Turns out I could have gone to Manchester and back in the time it took for the post to turn up at my folks. Still probably meant I didn't spend money I can't afford.

I'm hoping Savage has at least another three books in it. I know it wsa talked about as a four book story but with the first three collected as one tale it'd be interesting for it to carry on with a new artist on board. It's all very well defeating the invader but rebuilding? Lots of room for Pat to explore the real world in this parallel.

Dredd rolls along, the Kitty revelation wasn't a surprise but the details were. Momentum should carry us to Christmas.

Dante feels like it's never been away and is a strong addition to the mix.

I'm really enjoying Sin Dex even more for all the stories coming together and moving the status quo along. If you can do that. You know what I mean.

FS, well written, nicely drawn. Nothing shockingly new but a tale told well is always welcome.

Button Man feels like a telly show that has continued after a lead actor has become unnavailable or unwilling to do much. I'm enjoying it and, oddly, for all that the art is more stylised it feels more 'real world' than previous books. Very odd.

Books & Comics / Re: Thrill Power

And the nice people at Travelling Man Leeds have been shipping me comics and graphic novels free of charge for a while now and there's never been a problem. When an order includes half a dozen Showcase Presents books that's a mighty weight and price and effort and appreciate it enough to pass that on.

A mate of mine is a bit of an actor on the side - you can spot him in the Tennant Casanova - and he was in something or another with Vinnie Jones. Sharing stories of embarassing moments Vinnie admitted to telling a joke with the punchline "Don't ask me, I'm the effing poofter they were looking for" on the set of X-men 3 and then wondering why Ian McKellen didn't laugh very much. Apparantly no-one had told Vinnie that McK was gay.

Film & TV / Dredd artist on Eggheads.
24 October, 2007, 06:35:38 PM
Anyone with a cable box that repeats old telly might, or might not, be able to watch tonights Eggheads in which Dredd artist and Roxy Music tribute saxophonist Lee Sullivan failed to do very well at all.

If you're interested in that sort of thing.

General / T-shirts at play - reduced again.
24 October, 2007, 03:48:22 PM
I'd have bumped up the old thread but the sites still playing funny biggers so I can't. Ne'ertheless the sale at Play continues apace and the t's are down to 4.99.

That said a lot of them have sold out of XL, or at least a lot of the ones I wanted. Since XL isn't that large in these shirts you might want to think twice before settling for a medium. Unless you're Dan Kelly, or Wils.

They have an Anthrax/Dredd shirt as well. For those that want one.
