Off Topic / Tell a crap joke thread
10 September, 2010, 02:33:19 PM
(Quiet day at the office hence another thread)

After the genius that was the "Have a shout" thead.  I thought I would submit this thread for ya'll approval.  Tell a crap joke thread (once again forgive me if this has been done recently- couldn't see anything in my quick search through most recent pages)

I'll get the ball rolling:

A wig and a turd go into a bar.  The wig orders two beers from the barman.  The barman says to the wig: "I'm not serving you!"
"Why not?" The wig replies.
"Well, you're off your head and ya mate's steaming!"

Ba-doom pish...

Help! / What is this sci-fi comic series called?
10 September, 2010, 12:52:38 PM
After writing about my first Dredd experiences in another thread it sparked off a different memory:

I used to have a comic called Spike! (kinda of a Dennis the Meanace rip-off from what I remember).  There was a sci-fi series in the comic (which thinking about it would likely have been a reprint from elsewhere) which I'd like to find out more about (you'll have to forgive my hazy memory for a lack of any detail).

The story was the typical "one man from Earth" kinda thing and I can't remember his name.  He was thr typical big jawed hero type.  There were two stories I remember.  One concerning a large space entity, which I THINK was probably called the Star-Beast (?).  Mankind was constructing a laser/bomb that was the only thing capable of killing it.  The last panel I remember reading of it was a space ship facing off against the thing (which in my mind's eye looks v much like the creature in the side of the old Space Invaders cabinet).  I didn't have the next issue so never found out how it ended.

The second story wasn't nearly as interesting in my eyes but concerned a group of aliens called the Krell who (once again in my mind's eye) looked like Doctor Who's Sontarans.

Anyone know what I'm talking about and point me in the right direction?

Help me Obi-wan keforum, you're my only help...

General / The first Dredd story you remember reading?
10 September, 2010, 12:33:18 PM
Forgive me if this has been done before.  Only been a board member for a short while, but thought I'd indulge in a little nostalgia trip...

Many years ago at junior school we used to have a pile of comics (usual Dandy and Beano, Eagle and some 2000ad)  They were comics people had at home that we were encouraged to bring in to share with the rest of the class (I had felt compelled to bring in some of my collection of Spike! comic, but I digress). We were allowed to read them during wet dinner (when we had to stay inside due to the rain) or weekly reading time.

The Dredd story I remember most clearly was one I read on one such occasion about a deadly gameshow that no-one was allowed to win.  Dredd is tracking down the host of the show and in an attempt to escape the host throws an axe and upon hitting the bullseye on a target above JD's head releases a mechanical bull.  It was the final scenes that have stayed with me throughout the years: The "prize" of one ton of flesh eating maggots being dropped on the host.

I recently got Dredd Case files 6 and found the story in there (knew it had to be in one of them, and was looking forward to the surprise of rediscovering it).  Turned out to be called The Game Show Game.

It was probably not my first exposure to Dredd and 2000ad but for some reason the story has stuck with me throughout the years.  The thing that really struck me in the re-read was how much of it I remembered.  Even down to the final panels showing the host's maggot crawling skeleton (though oddly my mind's eye had reversed the image)and Dredd's last comment of not wanting his prize for winning the show.

The story certainly isn't cited as being classic Dredd (at least I've not read any commentary on it) and I can't say why it stayed with me and made such an impression on my young mind, but for sentimental reasons, it'll always stay as one of my own favourites.

So, anyone else care to share their own first Dredd story?

Osprey Publishing, well known for their military history books are releasing something a little different...

Hoping it's up to the usual high standards they release all their books with.  I've also read that it is going to be the start of a new series that they will be releasing over time (I can only assume vampires and werewolves will be incoming).

The book itself is hidden away on the Osprey site but for those of you with an appetite for the undead here is a link:

I've already placed my order, should look good next to Zombie Survival Guide et al...

(dammit I can't seem to get the hang of properly embedding pictures into my posts so you'll all just have to make sure with the attachment below-)

So, just read the prog and rather than posting this in the prog review thought it might help to have a thread for consolidated ideas as to where this story is going.  I for one wasn't expecting those those 3 words- to be continued...

My immediate thoughts were if this is a two (or indeed more) parter, will we being seeing this first part of the story as the "life" side of the story with johnny being brought back, will we be seeing reasons for Johnny having to be killed off again? Will the next part to be the "death" side?  The story is called the Life and Death of Johnny Alpha after all...

Books & Comics / Warren Ellis' Freakangels
20 August, 2010, 07:54:30 PM
Recently picked up the first trade of this one and was a bit underwhelmed by it.  It felt a little like spying on some emo-kids wet dream - a group of kids with purple eyes hanging around in a gang trying to be a bit weird, whilst not talking about the big nasty thing they did that ended civilisation.

The local comic shop has got vols 2,3 and 4 so it must be vaguely successful.  Is it worth sticking with?

Games / LIMBO on Xbox Arcade
05 August, 2010, 11:48:33 PM
I know it's been around for a couple of weeks but downloaded a copy of it today.

Great game.  Eerie, odd, creepy and at times disturbing (I jump everytime I get caught in a bear trap).  Reminds me very much of old school Prince of Persia (the original 2d sideways scroller- not the time bothering, free running tw@ he's become now) crossed with Amiga classic Another World and finally a bit of Ico thrown in.

The puzzles seem pitched at the right level.  Not so easy that you solve them on the first attempt, not so difficult as to make you wanna tear your hair out.  Just difficult enough that you feel rather clever when you do work them out.

The only thing that does trouble me is it seems possibly a little short and maybe isn't too much replay beyond playing again for "the experience"...

General / What happened to The Megacity Frendz?
05 August, 2010, 07:14:07 PM
Like others on the board I used to be a big twoth reader and then kinda fell outta love with it. I'm back from the my time in the wilderness now(and wondering why I ever left in the first place) and I've managed to reverse my collection from current to Prog 2008.

The big story when I fell away was the touted as the 2nd robot war instigated by the Megacity Frendz.  The Frendz were quite the underworld organisation (based on the Mafia from what I recall) had fingers in many pies and had gone as far as to replace the Judges Lawgivers with their own, which were designed to explode and kill or maim the Judge holding it when they received a command from the Frendz. (which they did at the start of the story-line).

I read the whole of the story, which if I'm honest was a little disappointing. (I don't think it helped that it was partially crossed over with the Meg and a companion story involving DeMarco as a P.I.)It seemed to get reseolved a little too easily from what I recall- one moment everyone had their backs against the wall, the next it was back to business as usual.

Anyway  it would seem from the current(ish) progs I've been reading that there is no reference to the Frendz.  Are they still about?  If not what happened to them?

Welcome to the board / Wotcha!
02 August, 2010, 04:46:25 PM
Been lurking for a while and thought it was time to say hello and introduce myself:

I'm sure my tale is full of the usual stuff, used to read Twoth a looong while ago (I can remember it being in the school pile of comics (we each were allowed one comic each to read with our bottle of school milk) before a teacher looked through them and they "got lost" (probably due to Shako))

Rediscovered it many years later and the inevitable birds and booze then became more important.  However picked up a copy on a whim a few months back (beginning of The Talented Mayor Ambrose story)  and have since been trawling ebay and Forbidden Planets for back issues and Trade Paperbacks.

Gotta say rediscovering Twoth is like finding an old friend (cliched but true).  The think I love about the comic most?  It seems to have grown up with me.  Language is a little fruitier (which is no bad thing) violence is still there and it still has that slightly illicit feeling it did all those years ago...

So anyway - Hello!
