Over all I think I'm enjoying this season more than 2 but not as much as 1.

I wouldn't have expected it from the comments on the board, but I'm finding 3 to be a massive improvement over 2.

The "Science" of 42 was cobblers, but it always is really, other than hought tthat I thought it was pretty good - doing an episode in semi-real time helped make it pretty punchy and pacey. The solution for accidentally released escape pods being a big lever on the outside of the ship was a bit crap though.

Your're in for a bit of a treat next week, i think.

Well, CBC has just started showing them - I'm about an episode ahead of you as they just showed the Shakespeare one. So far it's not been great (thought the Runaway Bride one was dire), but has been way better than the worst bits of 2.

I quite like the lack of Rose, thouigh of course it's a sure bet he'll be moaning on about her each and every episode. And Martha is pretty fun.

It's what happens when you combine a VRML chatroom with stupendous amounts of media-hype. Avoid.

Rogue may have actually been ahead of the curve on that one, but there was a definate vogue for characters going to cyberspace and fighting cartoon sharks for a while. That seemed to be the comicbook understanding of what cyberpunk was "all about". Even John Constantine, over at DC, was in a going-to-cyberspace-and-fighting-cartoon-sharks type story.

I'm pretty certain that Starship Troopers has been mentioned as an influence for The V.C.s, and even if that's not the case it certainly seems to rip off big chunks of it.

And Alan Moore swiped the accelerated combat time stuff from The Forever War for Halo Jones Book III.

ALso anyone who likes whimsical fantasy of the Tales Of Teleguth kind should totally check out Jack Vance or Clark Ashton Smith.

Early 2000ad definately had a leaning towards 70s SF writing - Alfred Bester and Robert Zelazny would have been big influences - The Cursed Earth being essentially a rip-off of Damnation Ally. I'd guess Harlan Ellison and John Brunner had a bit of an impact as well.

2000ads pretty much remained firmly entrenched in 70s style SF. Every so often someone tries to drag it forwards to the 80s and Cyperpunk it up a bit but the results are usually fucking awful. TBH the concerns of most modern SF writers these dyas are so esoteric and non-visual that I can't really see them making good comics material. Still, Warren Ellis and Grant Morrison take a crack at that kind of thing every so often in their work.
