On the subject of gun-nuttery, its worth catching Michael Moores documentary "Bowling For Columbine", an investigation into just why the hell it is that Americans shoot each other so much more than anyone else. Asides from a few of Moores over theatrical doorstoping routines, which always fall flat for me, its a masterpeice of documentary filmmaking, and it it goes a few places you wouldn't expect it to.

You're right, you're right. And I do so want to become nothing less than the scojo of gun-nuttery.

Except, of course, the guys who come swinging in through the window are carrying HK MP5s instead...

I see... So that bloke with the big gun is just doing an enthusiastic air punch?

Very Billy Idol :-)

probably a bit to gung-ho for most of you but i guess that arthur will appreciate the link.

Heh. I've already sent a snarky email pointing out that its way too bulky to go swinging through windows with.

Off Topic / Biowire

Those I mentioned it to will be pleased to, though now I have to limp around in sandals to accommodate the bandage.

I was under a general aesthetic for the procedure, but The doctor described the offending nail as "being like barbed wire" when he cut it out. Later he described the fragments of nail as "like fishhooks".

...which makes me think that somehow the biowire that rogue keeps running into would be all the more disgusting if it was made from toenail material.

What? No moral complexity? You've got an alien hunter, who thinks he's been doing GOOD, but actually the place he works at kills aliens rather than looking after them so actually his been BAD. And then he finds out the priest who runs the place, who should be GOOD, is, in a move that is totally unprecedented throughout the history of 2000ad, is actually BAD. I mean, how much moral complexity do you want? And its called ASYLUM, and there's various contentious issues revolving around Asylum seekers in the real world right now, though obviously it does very little to explore that besides the title...

Ahh...

I'm being hard on the poor thing. The first couple of issues of set-up worked quite well, and the odd scene has been very well executed. Of course since then we've had about three issues of fighting and poor that do nothing much to move the plot on, and the scope of it seems quite limited and, given that this is 2000ad, the themes that it nods at (just barely) are all very well trodden. So its no classic, but it?s a hell of a lot better than, say , Killer or Bison.

And the art is, as I've said, very very nice.

Personally I'm not that fussed, though it does seem a little infantile. The turning-inside-out thing was quite cool though, but doesn't make up for this being such a nothing story. Throw it back in the alien-pit, I say.

hee hee hee i don't know theres something nemesisy going on in asylum

Hmm... Its basically the escape from the alien pit from Nemesis Book 1, only without the cool setting, the epic fight, any real characterisation or anything worth reading it for...

Nice art though.

Durham Red

I wouldn't describe her as a strong feamle character, as such. Shes more of a pair of tits with a gun.

Killing Time was amazing.

The scariest thing 2000AD's ever published.

Any chance of a collected edition?

Hmm... those that are interested may be able to hunt down further hints, suggetsions and feedback about pitchfest in the archives of the Scriptdroids yahoo group. I might have a hunt through it myslef and see if theres anything worth reposting here.

My main suggestions would be (1) Don't do anything too "clever" or "complex", the point of your pitch should be fairly self explanatory (2) Write down your pitch and practice reading it out repeatedly.

What would 2000ad look like if it had started now?

It wouldn't. It'd be a cheap and exploitative playstation game instead.
