I always wondered what star scan's really are in 2000ad, ever since i seen Mike McMahon's 80's Dredd star scan's start out life as as covers for the american comic book colour reprints.

So i thought they might be 1. over stock general covers.
2. professional artist (2000ad fans) submitting character paintings.
3. Actually commissioned for star scan.

none or all of the above?

what spured me to ask the question was Liam Sharps cool ABC Warriors Star Scan's lately, and i realised their had not been much in the lines of star scan's in a while in 2000ad.

Any one have any insider knowledge of how a star scan comes about?
