Help! / Viral EEEVIL
21 March, 2005, 02:36:46 AM
Hi all.  Useless luddite seeks help again.

It seems my computer has a virus/trojan/whatever.

Every time I start up Internet Explorer I get a cute little message from McAfee Virusscan saying it's found a "BDD-Backdoor Trojan" (there's a euphamism waiting to be exploited there, Wils) and has deleted it.  But then it's there the next time I start IE again (in fact, the next time there are 2, then 3, then 4 and so on... up until I reboot, at which point we go back to 1 and it all starts again).

Infuriatingly, this nasty little critter has changed my homepage to a rather bland "About:Blank" and jiggered about with my favourites.

I've updated and run Spybot, Pest-Patrol and McAfeee scans several times - deleting the various adware guff that gets seived-up in the process.  And yet I'm still getting this motherfucking "virus found" warning, and no matter how many times I reset my homepage it's always back to (Siiigh) About:Blank when I start IE.

So.  Is my computer trying to tell me something, or can someone help me out?

Please remember to speak English, and not Techlish.

Many thanks in advance!

Help! / OT - Technophobe seeks MP3/Mobile help.
18 March, 2005, 07:35:31 PM
Hi.

So, the situation is: I know nothing about anything.

I just got a snazzy new mobile which, I'm told, can play MP3s, use them as ringtones, yadda yadda.  All very exciting.

But, I haven't the first clue how to download MP3s (best websites?  I'd rather not have to pay a whacking great fee for it too, if possible...) or how to transfer them to this new mobuloid.

It seems I can set up an email account through the phone, so I guess one way to do it would be to send emails to the phone with MP3 attachments.  Is that plausible?

Any thoughts very welcome,

My second begged-favour of the day.

I'm after someone with access to a decent colour scanner, a full recent-prog collection, and enough spare time to do me 30 seperate A4 scans.  I know this is dead cheeky, but my scanner just conked out on me (it was never much good anyway) and I'm after some visual reference stuff.

I can't really think of any costs it would feasible for me to offer to pay for, but anyone willing to give it a crack would certainly be eligible for a) Beer and b) the perhaps-maybe-potential-one-day naming of a City Block/Character/Vehicle/Weapon after them.  Or something.

Anyone?

Cheers,

-si.

Help! / Anyone got a spare Prog 1357?
09 March, 2005, 12:22:36 AM
Hey folks.  If any of you happen to have a spare Prog Number 1357 (Frazer's funktastic "From Grace" cover), I'd be willing to fork out for it, with additional IOU BEER privelidges.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Not sure if anyone's posted this yet, so here you go.

I think it looks rather good, personally.  Oh, and it sorts out the extra-head conundrum rather well...

Off Topic / Hunter S. Thompson bites the dust.

Inevitable that it'd happen eventually, I suppose, but still a crying shame:

Hunter S. Thompson appears to have shot himself dead.

Bugger.

Just wondering if anyone knew, off the top of their head, what became of the High Priest of the Simping Movement?  I have a vague memory of him shutting himself away in a bombproof bunker (with his invisible chihuahua) prior to the second robot war (The Doomsday Scenario) - has he ever emerged or is he still tucked up in there?

So... just watched the first episode of this new series "exclusive to Sky 1", and I'm confused.  Either it's the most appallingly made, badly written and just generally fuckawful thing I've ever seen, or it's the opening episode of a series laden with interesting concepts and loads of potential, which is hamstrung by the need to churn out a lot of information in very little time, as well as inserting the rudiments of a story.

Thoughts...?

This is probably old news, but it's been confirmed (I now discover) that a 4 hour Farscape miniseries is being made to tie-up all the dangly bits left by the sudden cancellation after series 4.  Frankly it turned to tosh halfway through series 3, so I don't really know what's going on, but it looks as though they're going back to brass tacks for this.  Could be quite funky.

General / Comics Awards
10 June, 2004, 10:12:59 PM
Hate to publicise something solely for my own benefit but - meh, whaddafug, no one else will:  The typed-up version of the comics awards were slightly (but significantly, for yours-truly) wrong.

Dom Reardon very deservingly won the 'best new talent' category.

I, me me me *me*, came second.

Thank you.

Help! / Help! Strontium Dog knowledge required!
06 May, 2004, 10:38:37 PM
Apologies for this, folks - I've tried scouring the net but resources are few and time is tight.  I have one or two SD questions with which I'd be insanely grateful for any help.

Questions:

1) What year did the nuclear war (which caused all the Strontium-90 stuff) happen?  (and who caused/ended it?)

2) What year did Johnny meet Wulf?

3) What year did Wulf die?

Thanks in advance!

Okay, so this sort of thing is totally reprehensible when someone else does it - using up valuable board space with a list of their grubby castoffs in the hopes that some dimwitted cretin will be prepared to shell out.  However, this is a totally different situation because... um... because...

--no, I have no excuse.  I'm doing this in the hopes that some dimwitted cretin will be prepared to shell out for some of this.  One or two of the items are 2000AD/comic related and the others are arty in a fantasy/sci-fi sort of way.  I'm moving house and am consequently getting rid of everything I own.  It's a sad reflection of my wordly property that this little clutch is pretty much all I could find that might actually earn some money.  Oh, and this is my first selling-on-ebay experience so (lame excuse) I'm posting these to find out whether the, er, links work.  Yeah, that's it.  Hey ho:

Sorry for the lateness of this.  Went to the pub last night and whilst the little lady was in the loo I had a flick through one of the papers left lying around.  Found a nice big double-page spread all about Mr Moore.  Lots of interesting facts, but for the sake of brevity three standouts are:

1)  There's an exhibition of All Things Mooreish at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Charleroi, including original artwork from V for Vendetta, Watchmen and the unpublished third chapter of 'Big Numbers'.

2)  'Lost Girls', Moore's tribute to 'literary pornography' in which Dorothy (Wizard of Oz), Alice (~ in Wonderland) and Wendy (Peter Pan) meet and... er.... enjoy themselves... will be published in December.

3)  David "I wrote the X-Men Film" Hayter has written a 'Watchmen' screenplay, which goes into production in Prague later this year.  Following the From Hell/LXG debacles, Moore has decided that he can't keep telling himself a bad movie is no reflection upon a good book, and has severed all ties with the works being filmed.  Since he has none of the rights to Watchmen, he's simply disassociated himself from it and told the producers to share the money out amongst the artists.

On a personal note, I wonder whether a man who wrote a screenplay in which mutants-with-problems overcome prejudice and hardship to become True American Heroes, is really the best man to be writing a screenplay based upon a graphic novel which is so relentlessly critical of those very things?  Ho hum.  Time will tell.

General / Border of the Month!
04 February, 2004, 07:50:53 PM
I nominate the pleasantly geometrical borders seperating Egypt from Libya and Sudan.  They have everything a good border needs: a little pathos, an understated flourish at their northern shores, a modicum of common sense, etc etc.

Egypt has the sort of border that doesn't take things too seriously, doesn't react in undignified outrage when anyone dares to question their validity, and doesn't give a fig if the odd sand dune or wobbly dried-up stream drifts back-or-forth once in a while.

Egypt's border: I salute you.

Fucking hell!

David Icke, who has made a reputation with his highbrow (read: ridiculous) conspiracy theories about giant amphibians and orwellian fascist states, was just taking part in an interview with a slightly perplexed Phillip Schofield and Fern Brittain on 'This Morning'!  Every appearance by the Icke-meister on UK TV is of course to be applauded, but.... jeeee-zus.... which dappy research assistant seriously thought that *he* would benefit from the appearance, or that 'this morning' viewers were going to be interested in his new book.

It was televisual gold, I tell you.  Phillip Schofield saying "So... hang on... you're saying that the 9/11 disaster was caused by Big Lizards?" is something I won't forget in a hurry.

Mad as a sack of stoats.

General / PS2 Suggestions

Okay folks, need your help.  I quite fancy getting myself a new PS2 game - haven't bought one in about a year, been waaaay too busy (still am, but fuck it).  I'm looking for ideas - any and all considered.

Punch-em-up Tekken style things are probably a no-no, as are straight and boring racing games that don't have, say, weapons and unfeasible powerups.

Other than that: what's hot, what's not?
