I'm writing this on Saturday, but I too have had a hell of a week. Spent the whole thing looking for work to supplement my meagre student income, without success.

Ah, that would explain it. And peace reigns across the board.
BUT FOR HOW LONG?

Seems to have disappeared... Possibly this is a contribution to World Peace.

So, to sum up, by "godawful underground comics", I mean "those of the underground comics which are godawful" as opposed to "all comics of the underground genre are awful".

Sorry, what I meant by citing "Superman, Sandman, Tank Girl, Ghost World and all those godawful ironic underground comics" was that people tend to assume that because you read some comics, you must read all of them. Which is wrong, because within comics there are so many genres. It's a bit like saying that if you like Citizen Kane then you must like Revenge of the Nerds 4, because they're both movies.
As it happens, I do like Tank Girl and have no problem with Neil Gaiman. I'm not a fan of superhero comics and found Ghost World quite dull. What I meant by "godawful underground comics" was these ones that are knock-offs of people like Daniel Clowes and really aren't as clever or funny as they think people ought to think they are. They tend to be self-consciously wacky and ironic and are so mired in cliche that they're almost self-parodies.
Rant over.

What gets me about the perception of comics in Britain is that there tends to be no distinction between comic genres. So people assume that if you like 2000AD, then you must therefore like  Superman, Sandman, Tank Girl, Ghost World and all those godawful ironic underground comics.

"And does anyone know if the man who used to wear the 'end is nigh' sandwich board still parades up and down Oxford Street?"
I believe he has passed on, but apparently his board is in the Museum of London.

Help! / Re: Judge Dredd Index

What I think would be good would be some sort of Dreddverse encyclopedia for the benefit of new readers. It would basically detail the characters, locations and events up to now. I think they did release something similar a few years back, but a lot's happened since then.

Sir, where grammar is neglected, can anarchy be far behind?

I'd love a story that just straightens everything out. Like, are ABC Warriors, Invasion! and what-have-you part of Dredd continuity or what?
I have my own ideas about the origins of the Dreddverse. They involve a fake ID, a time machine and George W. Bush...

Although the idea of a Stront adventure in America does sound good.

Thing is, there's at least three different versions of Dredd's future, once you factor in Red Razors, Strontium Dog and ABC Warriors/Nemesis. Plus, if Satanus is the son of Old One-Eye, then that means 'Flesh' is also Dredd's future and aaaaaaaaaaarrrrghhh....

General / Re: So which one do you prefer?......
19 June, 2003, 09:01:17 AM
I think I actually prefer the Meg at the moment, but only because of specific stories (i.e. Devlin Waugh, Black Siddha). In terms of overall content, I think 2000AD is stronger.

I know Robert Rankin put a time-travelling sprout named Barry in his book 'Armageddon: The Musical'. It lived in Elvis's head. Another pointless point there.
Oh, and it occurs to me that The Mess is a liquid character, thus meaning that I have foiled my own challenge. Blast.
