Film & TV / Re: Rentaghost.

I am slightly too young to remember the Mumford era, so it was all Claypole, all the time for me, hence my fondness for the prancing little chap. Something about Rentaghost felt gleefully anarchic to me at the time, so it will always hold a special place in my affections. I also love the fact that Dobbin's 'actors' were also the Myrka in 'Warriors of the Deep'! Besides, it also had one of the best theme tunes to a children's tv programme - "An apparition quipped from deep inside a crypt... ring Rentaghost!'

Enough of this unfeasible anti-Rentaghost chatter! Rentaghost was bloody wonderful, and if you don't agree I'm sending in my pantomime horse to leave hoofmarks all over you rotters.

It even had Biggins in it! What more do you want?  :)

As ever, cheers for all the kind words about my advent stuff, folks. I came close to making it a triptych with a 'Miracle On 34th Parallel' one, which would have featured Alternate Maximan cuddling Zenith, but decided not to hog the thread!

I was half-expecting the added line "People thought he had a police horse in the car but it was Camilla.." Or was that what you meant?  :)

Are you saying Dredd keeps
some random bloke's brain
in there?  Because that would be weird.

Naw, I'm saying that when Danny, Mac and Tommy open the box they see an inflatable bum and a false moustache. "It is, isn't it? I think I might understand..."  :)

This thread works just as well (better?) if you imagine the question is 'What's in Kano's Black Box?'

Amazing stuff, Dave Hedmark, love it! Right then... for my bit of the advent calendar, I would like to present... 2000AD at the Xmas Movies! Featuring a science-fiction double-feature...

and

Coloured in with the wee pad on my laptop and an out of date bootleg copy of PaintShopPro!
Rejected ideas: It's a Waughnderful Life, Nightmare Before Necropolismas, Santa Claus Conquers The Betelgeusians, Fred 2L Claus and sundry others. And while I'm here... fellow festive forumites, though I have only been around here a few months, you have made me feel very welcome and helped rekindle my love of all things zarjaz! Many thanks, and as Eddie and Richie from 'Bottom' would say... 'MERRY BLOODY CHRISTMAS!'

Announcements / Re: RIP John Hicklenton

Of all the original art I have owned or seen, never has there been a bigger contrast between what it looks like published and what it looks like 'in the flesh' as with Hicklenton. I liked his mad, twisted creations when I was younger, and used to try and draw warped-looking depictions of Torquemada in his style (but obviously without his talent or knowledge of anatomy!) but I won't pretend he was someone I'd have said was one of my absolute favourites. But recently, I got some of his original Nemesis pages, and was genuinely blown away. Those of us who collect original art know the thrill of seeing the additional level of detail in the original pieces... with the Hicklenton pages, the level of detail was truly astonishing. It is really striking just how much was lost in the transition to the printed pages. Up until that point, I'd have said I thought he was a great artist. After that... he pretty much rose to the status of genius in my eyes.

Hello, good evening and welcome. Congratulations on your immaculate taste - as a genuine new reader (as opposed to a lapsed returner like me) what made you pick up your first prog?

He's physically five years older than he is chronologically. Although then you've got to factor in the post-Necropolis rejuve job which probably knocked a decade back off again.

He draws some of the most amazing, panoramic city-scapes I've ever seen. I'd love to live in one them.  :)

Books & Comics / Re: The Goon: An Irish Wake.

I actually completely forgot about Goon Noir. The banned issue was released, but in a special wrapping and not actually as an issue of 'The Goon' (even though Goon and Frankie are in it.) The 'metal band' crossover, however, is actually a crossover with the cartoon Metalocalypse (I forgot about this too.)

Nae bother, mate... for the most part, the earlier Goon stories are basically self-contained but eventually the continuity starts becoming more important (Vol 4 maybe?) The earlier stories mostly involve Goon's nemesis, the Zombie Priest and his minions, but there are quite a few stories centred around Goon's sometime-friend, sometime-foe Dr. Heironymous Alloy, the golden scientist, who gets a lot of the best lines. I get the impression Powell started to realise Alloy was dominating the strip, so he is mostly written out by Vol. 4.
