I assumed Cal was his surname. I imagine his first name was something lengthy and exotic, like Hieronymous, or inappropriately normal, like Steve. Steve Cal, Chief Judge.

I don't think Dredd's being white is integral to the character.  So why not depict him as black?

In another medium, fair enough, no problem with that at all. In a rebooted alternate-timeline comic - well, it'd seem a bit contrived and pointless, but all right. Kill him off and make Judge Giant the star of the strip? Go for it. But if you're looking for the regular Joe to spontaneously undergo a Lois Lane "I am Curious (Black!)" style transformation...nah, I'll pass.

Surely most of the best Dredd supporting characters are women or non-white? (I appreciate this is sometimes only to make them visually dissimilar to Dredd.) Nonetheless, given that context, I'm not sure it matters so much if artists mostly tend to default to white blokes for random background judges.

See, I start with the second-favourite and then employ the system detailed above. I need a good aperitif.

Blimey! Saw that and immediately tried to press a 'like' button that the forum doesn't have.

On the other hand, when introduced, Brufen has a hexagonal badge that says Tek in a black circle, worn centrally. Both shoulder pads are non-eagle.

So Kano finishes and its as good as I remember. Why its not more highy regarded I simply don't know, its wonderful. Now I will accept that its not Bad Company 2 or Bad Company wonderful, but its damned close.

Not as strong as BC1 or 2 'cos:

1: It feels a bit superfluous. The story concluded as perfectly and definitively as possible at the end of the Krool Heart, and while the Kano story is fine as a coda, it can't have the same weight. Kano and Danny are defined by their relationship to each other and to the Krool. No Krool, no Danny (who are now the same thing anyway) means Milligan has to redefine Kano, and the result is interesting, but not as potent. (Even Kano realises this - look where he's going at the end.)

2: Art's not on the same level as 1 and 2. Again, it's good, but nowhere near as good. 'Scream Blue Murder' is a great cover though.

I do like the story, but I love BC1&2. Passionately.

Other Reviews / Re: The Vigilant

Read this today. Art's good, script is... well, I can see what Furman was aiming for, but I don't think it quite works. When Marvel and DC do this sort of infinite crisis crossover, they're reliant on pre-existing knowledge of a shared universe - depending on their vintage, the readers might not know all the featured characters, but they know enough of them to be invested in the story. Most of the characters in The Vigilant (or The Forgotten, as Dr Sin seems to think the comic is called) haven't seen print in at least thirty years. They needed to be much fewer in number and much more strongly established within the story itself, rather than just their introductory bio. I could have seen either Blake Edmonds or the Leopard From Lime Street (probably more so the latter) as good focal point characters to give readers an in-roads into events - I feel the story needs more of an anchor.

Purgatory is better than Inferno, because it doesn't feature Judge Dredd, and therefore he can't be written out of character.

I've got a guilty soft spot for Purgatory - it is crass, puerile, derivative and unpleasant, but it succeeds in its aims and, like all of Millar's work, tells a story well. (The story may be stupid, or riddled with lapses in logic, but he tells it well.)

I'm trying to recall a post-apocalytpic series i think ran from the late 80's into the 90's, or maybe it was just reruns, about a holy knights order.

Sounds like Knights of God:

Though 'The Satanist' is not a great story, "I need to get to know her now." is a great moment.

Wagner's interest in Rico lasted about as long as his interest in Giant. If he was still writing Dredd, he'd have got bored of Beeny by now, too.

I think you're probably generally right on this, though significant moments for Rico in Tour of Duty and even right at the end of Day of Chaos suggest Wagner was probably interested enough in the character to return to him occasionally.

I feel like Wagner may have lost interest in Giant round about the same time Rico was introduced: to a certain extent, Rico supplanted him as Dredd's 'heir'.

'Giant' is in Case Files 20. Not sure about 'Prodigal' off the top of my head.
