Yes.. but to hit earth with their asteriods, even with their link with the brain bug they would have to have started their attack thousands of years ago.. long before mankinds agressive colonisation of space even started.

Hmm. That's something I hadn't considered. There is no easy explanation for this. Maybe... a wormhole? Precognition? Clutching at straws here...

And heres a thought... why didn'd the humans just fuckin nuke the bug planet from orbit... no need what so ever for hand do hand combat.

Well maybe their nuclear technology isn't that much more advanced than our own. It would take a massive ammount of explosive power to wipe out all life on a planet, and would also make it completely uninhapitable.

Just shit... or am I thinking too much??

No, but clearly I'm not thinking nearly enough. I still think that it isn't really relevant though.

There is some interesting discussion of these topics here: http://www.nitpickers.com/movies/nitpick.cgi?np=2126, and here: http://www.nitpickers.com/movies/nitpick.cgi?np=925

Clarence Bodicker is just a bad ass out for personal gain... why where the bugs attacking earth and how could they pridict the trajectory of the rocks they were throwing?

This is all inferred but I think the bugs were re-directing asteroids towards Earth in response to mankinds aggressive colonisation of space.

As to how they figured out the trajectory, I'm going to say that they were able to make complex calculations by dint of their link with the super-intelligent "brain bug". It's a feeble explanation, but at least I tried.

Interestingly I really enjoyed Starship Troopers despite the fact that it was possibly the least accurate adaptation of all time. Does that make me a hypocrite, I wonder?

Who cares. I still want to see Dredd face off against Krong in the new movie. They could do it in stop-motion to save money! Also starring: Kevin O'Neill as himself!

PROG 2011

Entirely composed of series I don't like! Apart from Dredd, of course.

Here's my crude mockery of a review.

Dredd: That visor looks suspiciously dark... It's like The Pit all over again. 4/10

Shakara: Free Henry Flint! 3/10

Sláine:
Well, Nest looked pretty hot. 3/10

Letters Page: The star letter praises Age of the Wolf! Tharg threatens us with another series! ARGH! 1/10

Rogue Trooper: An authentic retro experience. I finally know how you eldsters felt, back in the day. 4/10

Ampney Crucis Investigates: Jeepers! You couldn't have given the man some crayons a bit sooner? 3/10

Cadet Anderson: NO dark visors, but I can tell what you're up to... This was surprisingly good. 5/10

Necrophim: If the intent of this strip was to illustrate what it would be like be living in hell, then, mission accomplished. 2/10

Kingdom: I never liked this. You did. But you also thought the I.T. Crowd was "super-hilarious", and you thought that Michelle from Accounts was "totally into you". So you'll excuse me if I tend to disregard your opinions. 3/10

Overall: Just barely 4/10. I tend to judge the progs very harshly, but if I'm still bying (and reading) them then I guess I can't dislike them that much. Or maybe I'm just waiting for John Wagner to come back and make everything right again. Who knows?

On a side-note, I found it unfortunately ironic that Tharg (rightly) admonished someone on the letters page for the ridiculous claim that Dredd is all about serial killers trying to obtain human skin, while in the same issue we have a strip, set in Dredd's world , which is about a serial killer who is trying to obtain human skin.

Yeah, but whose fault is that?

Wagner just did the best he could with the hand he was dealt.

The film version should have been EXACTLY the same as the comic.

I'm truly dismayed by peoples comments on this thread. "If it was exactly like the comic it would be silly", well maybe you were rolling your eyes and laughing ironically as you read the wacky antics of Dredd, but personally, I was glued to the page, entranced by the action, excitement, and - yes - comedy of the stories. The idea that films operate in some rarefied domain over "childish" comics is complete horseshit.

If an idea is good, make a film that fits the idea, don't warp the idea to fit the "requirements" of a film. "A Walter Coffee machine"?! I want to see a robot vending machine with a lisp, crying oil onto Dredd's boots while he pretends to be a robot with plasti-skin. And I want to see him travel into the Cursed Earth and get some fucking tinned corn from the Jolly Green Giant.

But who cares what I think?

I just felt I had to say - you are all wrong. The Big Meg is a great story, and a fitting farewell (maybe) to a wonderful character.

I never knew S.B. Davis and Clint Langley did so many covers...

I'm one of the few people who actually enjoyed the second film. It was a little confused, but there was some great imagery and ideas, and the action was exciting.

The third one was so bad I couldn't actually bring myself to watch it all the way through. Dull, boring nonsense.

Excellent stuff there Ade (well obviously).

If I may be so bold as to venture a criticism: I think that Dredd should be shown firing his lawgiver at the end of page 1. Otherwise it feels like there's a scene missing between page 1 and page 2.

Obviously there's no criticising the actual art. This is exceptional stuff, as always. I love the level of detail here, the unusual "camera angles", and use of light and shadow.

Give this man a mega-epic to draw!

So you reckon the post-necropolis rejuve was primarily cosmetic?

I think so. The only reason given for the rejuve is that the Chief Judge wants Dredd to look normal again. They might also have repaired some tissue damage etc, but I dont see that as being the same as reversing the aging process.

As far as I know, the only way to reverse the aging process in Dredd's world is to use Stookie, which is highly illegal.

I think the idea is that, due to better quality medical care in the future, people are living longer and are staying in better shape, and this applies to Dredd too.
