The two that spring to mind are Return of the Taxidermist and Chopper: Song of the Surfer.

Judge Death: Young Death - Boyhood of a Superfiend and My Name is Death are worth a read, though both feature Dredd.

The book Judge Anderson: The Psi Files 01 is well worth getting, and the further Anderson solo stories up to Satan are pretty much all great.

The story of my defrocking is closely relating to my defrocking. No refereeing took place however.

You should definitely submit to the fanzines. I don't think any of them are bad choices. They're a good way to hone your writing skills and potentially attract attention to yourself. See: Al Ewing, Simon Spurrier.

Have a back-up plan.
