On Bullshit By Henry Frankfurt claims:

Quote"the bullshitter is faking things", but that "this does not necessarily mean he gets them wrong". While liars need to know the truth to better conceal it, bullshitters, interested solely in advancing their own agendas, have no use for the truth. Thus, Frankfurt claims, "...bullshit is a greater enemy of the truth than lies are"

What use is the high end of physics for example, to us now?

There's an apocryphal story that once upon a time William Gladstone asked Michael Faraday what the practical value of electricity, to which Faraday replied 'One day sir, you may tax it'

science is belief system as it requires you to believe things beyond your own empirical and rationality - a certain amount is taking other peoples word for things - this is an appeal to authority - this is a fallacy - fallacies are not valid argument forms. Of course the difference is that it is much easier to turn scientific beliefs into valid knowledge.

I'm sorry I end up yapping in any thread I join x

Your mouth is full of wrong. The appeal to authority is a fallacy employed by the popular press to cover science stories. They use phrases such as 'Scientists have said...' or 'research has shown...' and '...according to Professor Smarty Pants who is the expert the field of something esoteric and complicatey.'.

I'm not saying these scientists don't have valid opinions, but they're just that. Opinions. And it doesn't matter what 'research has shown' if you don't explain what the research was, how it was carried out and all that other technical stuff the popular press never bothers with because they're also appealing to emotion, and as we all know, hand-wringing about health/technological/cultural/religious implications is more interesting than dry statistics and boring methodologies.*

The public at large is shockingly mis-informed about science, and that is because the public accepts the appeals to both authority and emotion presented to them by the press. In proper, valid comprehensive scientific theories, the evidence, the data, the experimental methods used to obtain both of these, are the arguements, not the conclusions of the people that try and interpret them.

What's the motto of the Royal Society?

You know them, they're those people that put on cracking science lectures for kids every Christmas.

Their Motto is:

Nullius in verba

Take nobody's word for it

*run-on sentences are the hallmark of a good rant

You could start a new thread exclusively about Stupid Things Sports Pundits Have Actually Said on TV.

Mick McCarthy produced a peach during a recent cup tie. 0-0 at half time, Mick McCarthy is aske; if you were the manager, what would you be telling your team in the dressing room?

Mick McCarthy replies (in his authoritive Yorkshireman accent):

'Just keep playing Football'

This man has been allowed to manage both multimillionaire and international clubs.
