Help! / Re: Fr1day artwork

Pretty sure it's Scavenger Of Souls, 873 or 875 or thereabouts.

a bad guy for a 30part story should NOT be a comedy character

So that's Judge Cal out the window, then. Which I think is what Ennis was really trying to channel, hence Helter Skelter.

I've re-watched it, but it's just not the same without lurching around the local golf course whilst looking through the red plastic packing film from a Peak Frean's Teatime Assortment the next day.

As quixotic jungle adventures go, that's a bit rubbish.

Bet you'd sniff haughtily at a remake of Fitzcarraldo if it involved some nutty new-age DJ wanting to hold a rave in the middle of the Amazon and having the locals haul his stage through the jungle on logs. (How long, Hollywood?)

For me, placing War Of The Worlds in modern America was like having Sherlock Holmes foiling Nazis. You can forgive it because it's still Holmes, but you want gaslit London and pea-soupers, not Herr Strudelkopf getting busted by G-Men in the lobby of the Hilton.

Prog / Re: Prog 1442: Slaine - Freedom or...

Yup, solid if pedestrian Dredd, Slaine ended well (cor, the storytelling doesn't half improve when there's actually a story to tell) and Shakara's definitely brought a bit of oomph back to the Prog, even if the sauciness is a bit too Dante-ish.

Things are looking up again!

Veering further on-topic, 2000AD artists (Bolland, Gibbons and Ewins below as examples, though there are also others) tend not to make very good sleeves, I reckon.

There is a happy exception though...

Mentioned this before but for me it's the cover of XTC's Go2 album from 1978. Designed to ensnare hapless record shop browsers it's a very jokey concept that was really novel for it's time, before post-modernism became all the rage. It cheekily carries on across the back of the sleeve in the same blatant manner and bland descriptive type, on across the insert and on to the disc's label and so on, eventually extending across the promotional material ("This is a POSTER, the purpose of which..." and "This is a BADGE..." etc.) A great touch is that on the back of the sleeve the track listing has a corner missing, meaning you can only properly find out what's on the record if you match up the corner found on the insert inside, which you could only see if you actually bought the bloody thing. The story goes that famed hippy/prog album sleeve design firm Hipgnosis did it as rainy day work (inbetween endless commissions for things like airbrushed dragons, male swimmers and cows backsides) and had this artwork just lying about in the fireplace, regarding it as the office joke since no-one (i.e. weird-beard muso's) would have it. Quirky Swindonian popsters XTC stumbled across it on a visit and pounced, buying it on the spot much to Hipgnosis' collective bemusement, after a fruitless day had been spent leafing through unsuitable "hey, we're New Wave we are" style artwork (you know the sort, flourescent dots and spiky writing and all that.) I liked it originally because reading it in the shop made me smile, being a cynical little bastard even then, and was doubly pleased when I realised it was a band I actually liked hearing on the radio. (On a sidenote: for the Canadian edition of this album the record company missed the point entirely by printing the title above the text, which probably says a lot about Canada but I'm not sure what.)

Or Saltcoats.

Megazine / Re: Meg 233... Buzz Off!

though I'm not a massive Doctor Who fan myself I 'd probably appreciate a potted history

Yeah, an article would be okay. (Only had a passing interest in the new series myself.) I liked the way the Sapphire & Steel one concentrated on the comic strip as well, with Ranson's input making it a lot more relevant to the Megazine, so a Who one would have to do that too with maybe John Ridgway chipping in etc.
