Yeah, the distance is getting longer. Science is outstripping the screenwriters. It could be a case of the latest scientific ideas becoming harder to translate into film, which might explain why more movies now are being based on comics, where the imagery is richer. Still goes to show how lazy the movie makers are, though.

BTW, the film was "No Blade Of Grass" and had a theme tune by whistling Roger Whitaker. (I hope they get Rolf Harris doing the theme of the next Matrix film...)

Have sci-fi movies ever been ahead of literature?

Speaking of Tom Cruise murdering the classics, rumours abound that the chipmunk-faced twat fancies remaking "Death Race 2000". Judging by the cold reception that the "Rollerball" remake got I hope the pimply little git takes the hint.

What next? I mean, can you imagine Val Kilmer in a remake of "The Island Of Dr. Moreau" or Marky Mark in "Planet Of The Apes"? Oh, hang on...

It's only a matter of time before we see Vanilla Ice in "Soylent Green".

"Minority Report" was a book by Philip K. Dick, I'm afraid. (Other movie adaptions of his stuff include Blade Runner and Total Recall.)

"Sin City" was quite good. I liked it so much I got the next volume "A Dame To Kill For" which was reasonably good. Everything else after that was self-indulgent bollocks. What a let down.

Then there was THAT proposed Megazine 10th anniversary cover.

It ain't Miller time.

I've had a nasty suspicion that the whole reason young Judge Rico being introduced was for this...

Dredd & Rico have an epic adventure (possibly with the youngster reverting to type, like Kraken) and it all ends with Dredd's body getting smashed and Rico left a vegetable.

Justice Department use Dredd's old brain in Rico's body.

The Twin Towers were destroyed in the 1978 Annual, as Whitey's brother Welch sought revenge for what happened to Whitey in Prog 2. Shocking in hindsight, but there you go.

I've no idea about Gerry Finley-Day, I'm afraid. The last rumour I heard about Steve Bissette was what he actually gave up was self-publishing comics (possibly not comics altogether) and now works in a video shop.

I agree/disagree with your comparison, PVS. I've always rated Redondo alongside the artists you mentioned and it's nothing to do with hindsight or what was cool at the time.

Redondo's problem was he got offered a lot of rubbish (with a few notable "Time Twisters" excepted) in his time on 2000AD. He made the early stuff work, though. While he had something to prove.

One of the early strips he did was the MACH 1 story "The Planet Killers", with a big punch-up on a space shuttle. This had really good and extremely evil artwork for such a piss-poor story. (You'd swear the villain, Tex, was getting a hard-on as he throttled MACH 1, possibly echoing the editorial staffs sentiments). But by the end of the awful "Return To Armageddon" he ran out of steam and had Nemesis Book II to start.

There were a couple of problems with Nemesis Book II. Redondo gamely stepped in at short notice when Kevin O'Neill fell behind and went off to prepare for Book III instead. Redondo did a good rush-job in such a short time. Besides, Nemesis was Kevin O'Neill's baby art wise, you couldn't imagine anyone else drawing it. It took the mighty Bryan Talbot to stamp that idea out, but only after Redondo cleared the way.

Unfortunately, todays newer readers may only be able to judge Redondo by his reappearance on a lacklustre "Missionary Man" not that long ago and the reprint of Nemesis Book II. I say he deserves a new original strip in 2000AD.
