Sensible point... how could a director who has made so many good films make a film as bad as Zardoz?

Reckon the reason's a combination of the fallout from Space Odyssey and being give a blank cheque after Deliverance.

I love 60's/70's sci-fi films, the more arty farty the better, and wouldn't mind seeing either again. (Seconds is on next week, a largely abysmal film worth watching only for the spooky titles and the "twist" ending.)

Fuzzy memory. I remember the nature photography was impressive, following the ants around. The rest was probably arse, Nigel Davenport shouting a lot and stuff.

There was one vivid bit where these metal spheres pop up and spray the area with luminous poison to kill the ants, but one of them picks a bit up with his mandibles and trots off to the queen. He dies en-route so another one comes along and the ants do a sort of suicide relay race to get this stuff to the queen. She eats a bit and starts birthing luminous ants or something.
