Wake? The ones you've pictured are all correct IMHO except

544 and 570 both look like being by Mark Farmer only, but not positive (Mike Collins might know?) Certainly neither are by Paul Marshall.

862 is deffo Kev Hopgood.

Also, the unknowns not pictured here - 863 is Finn by Jim Elston, and 892 is Brigand Doom by Dave D'Antiquis.

The Prog 555-558 scans are by Garry Leach, as is the cover of Prog 561.

He also did illustrations for the text stories in the early Dredd annuals, namely Mad Tooth's Run, Desperadoes Of The Cursed Earth and A Day In The Death Of Joe Meg.

Are there any shocking plot twists left?

Well... let's just say that some of the classics weren't entirely original. *cough* The Pioneer *cough*

How can they be bettered?
Any recently that've rocked people's worlds in the same way?

Reckon it's pretty fair to say the one-off's stopped being classics after Prog 500 or so, but there's been some really good ones since, now I think. Sometimes nearly plotless but with great visuals; Plastic Surgeon (Prog 567) didn't have much of a story but there was this great art by Glenn Fabry, with a demented robotic operating table (resembling Elvis!) chopping soldiers up, and Feast Of Skin (Prog 1163) had these space pirates attacking a catlike race's statues, that had a predictable twist but still bizarre throughout. There's good spoofs as well; This Island East Dulwich (Prog 799); We Come In Peace (Prog 792) where a "cute" alien wipes everyone out with measles, and He Met The Moonmen (Prog 627) was a spot-on parody of commie bashing Marvel comics. And there's always spooky ones; Even Death May Die (Prog 841), where the autistic guy gets comforted by his carer as Lovecraft's dark gods turn up, and Imaginary Friend (Progs 998-999) was downright creepy, especially the depictions of greys befriending children throughout history.

So it's not been all that bad.

That'd be..

Bait (Prog 511) Alex Stewart / A. Haddersley

One classic FS bit I love was in They Sweep The Spaceways in Prog 219 by Alan Moore & Garry Leach. This godlike CEO with a moses style beard leans over and says to his kid "Some day all this will be yours, son.", and the kid looks just him, beard and all.

potato bounty hunter = T.C. Spudd's First Case (Prog 316) Alan Grant / Jim Eldridge

stupid mammal! = Class 0f '65 (Prog 382) Alan Hebden / Jesus Redondo

One Christmas During Eternity (Prog 271) Alan Moore / Redondo

(Tip for wannabe scriptdroids, change your name to Alan.)

Blimey, far too many to mention offhand. If anyone wants help with synopses and tracking the titles / prog numbers down I'll happily help.

Chopper is just taking the baby hostage to create a diversion isn't he?

I thought it was a doll.

Prog / Prog 1387

Excellent prog characterised by ace final panels.

Dredd - laugh out loud brilliance.

Savage - What a comeback. I had no probs reading this at all, dialogue, bolds, politics, whatever, you could nitpick like that on any strip in this prog. Heh - "I work for the gas board!" - classic. (Re: funkers. What Tharg should have done is print FLICKERS and kept everyone happy.)

A.H.A.B. - Sorry, waited for the Ishmael ref and cringed when it turned up, but extra oil for Elson on that last page.

Low Life - Flinty bliss. Those effects backgrounds are awful but the characters make this - great designs and group dialogue.

Chopper - Jug's demise and Chop's bitterness was a bit heavy, might be in for a bit of a miseryfest here.

Still early days for the continuing strips, really. Wait and see how they pan out.
