General / Do you hate Dredd?
07 May, 2009, 02:47:03 PM
I have this theory I keep expressing that Judge Dredd is crucial to 2000AD's success. Yes, there are lots of other great things going on, but without Dredd - and particularly Wagner Dredd - it would be a pale shadow of its former self.

On that note, a question occurred to me, looking at the issue from another direction. Are there any 2000ad fans out there who DON'T like the Judge Dredd strip? If so, what are your favourites?

I suspect this thread may need bumped up a few times, before it's abandoned.

Tumbleweed ahoy!

Yes, tremble... for my wife is up the duff again!

I'm thrilled to be able to say I'm going to be a dad for the second time. Shazia is due to give birth to a bouncing baby fish on November 17.

Rose came with us for the scan today and seemed to understand, a little, that she's going to be a big sister. She'll be a bossy one!

Now to redecorate, and find somewhere else for the giant wall of graphic novels...

I've had a bit of a slagging on the board for liking Teletext. It suits me very well, you see, to read the news in little four-paragraph stories.

Is anyone else determinedly old-fashioned with anything?

The amazing content of the Tarot comic is causing much hilarity here, and someone's reference to the Eye of Argon made me look it up and I've been laughing a lot!

Also, somebody recently mentioned the Star Wars Christmas special, which I dearly loved when Petemask inflicted - sorry -loaned it to me.

So, what wonderful pleasures are to be had from stuff that's utter shit? Are you a Diagnosis Murder fan?

What's so bad it's good?

Off Topic / Scotland's funniest dinosaur

Fellow Squaxx, I want to use this forum to praise and thank one of our own, the boarder known as Tiplodocus.

In his other guise as award-winning comedian Paul Glasswell, he did me proud last night at a big event that was very important to me.

This year I'm chairman of Perth Round Table, so I had to organise and lead our Burns supper, celebrating 250 years since Robert Burns was born. That included, among many other things, booking the after-dinner speakers, and Paul agreed to provide our toast to the lasses, despite being English and knowing very little about Robert Burns.

What he delivered was perfect - lots and lots of quick-fire jokes about why men are better than women. The response was huge. We had just short of 100 people there and everyone had a great time. Lots of people approached me afterwards to congratulate me on the event. This man is genuinely funny.

On a personal level, Paul helped to calm me down when I was getting pretty stressed about reciting To A Haggis, and in the end we had a brilliant night out. Strong drink was taken and today I feel a little bit delicate. Mr Tips moshing with one hand in the air is an image that will stay with me for a long time.

Thanks, Paul. I'm really grateful. You're one of the good guys.

So join me in raising a virtual glass in this toast to the dinosaur, to Scotland's bard and to a fine excuse to get utterly pished in January!

Lang may yer lums reek - wi' other fowk's coal!

General / FAO Buttonman: letter to Tharg query
19 October, 2008, 11:46:27 PM
Greetings, oh wise one! A colleague is seeking a letter he wrote to Tharg, way back when. It would be a pretty early prog, I would think. All I know is his name is David Henderson and he would have been from Dundee.

I know it's a challenge, but can you point me in the right direction? Also, would anyone have a scan?

Cheers

Books & Comics / Women comic creators

Re-reading the genius that is Grant Morrison's Doom Patrol at the weekend, I foolishly stumbled into looking at a page of the horror produced by Rachel Pollack.

I realise her gender isn't relevant to the fact she wrote a bloody awful comic, but it left me wondering: are there ANY decent artists or writers in comics who happen to be female?

A bit of a think took me to Melinda Gebbie and Angie Mills, both of whom have produced decent work. But it has to be admitted their work in comics has been, to some extent, influenced by the men in their lives.

I should stress here: I don't intend to be sexist. If I'd realised the left-handed were under-represented in comics, I'd be asking a question about them.

So... can any boarders suggest female comics professionals worthy of respect? While we're on the subject, can anyone suggest comics by women that I should look out for?

Hello, all.

I noticed this on eBay and think it deserves to go to a suitably-twisted individual, so I'm posting it here!

I don't know the seller butu I know the book well!

Chester Adams' Ed The Happy Clown is a brilliant, crazy, sick, hilarious graphic novel, so someone grab it!

Off Topic / Stuff you were proud to teach a child
27 April, 2008, 11:52:28 PM
Yesterday, Rose and I watched Doctor Who together, as lots of people do with their kids. (For the hundredth time, no, she wasn't named after Billie Piper's character!)

We'd been eating jelly babies and Rose - who's now two and getting better and better at saying complete sentences - loved them a lot!

I decided to teach her about the Doctor and within a few minutes I had her saying, "Doctoroo like jeh-babies!"

From now on, whenever I get a (rare) Saturday night off, I'll get a bag of jelly babies.

So, my question to you all is, what have you proudly taught your children?

Please forgive the thread title! I don't have the comic to hand and couldn't remember the tagline.

It's not the strongest cover, either. I'm a Steve Yeowell fan but this seems like a standard pose.

But there's a cracking end to Tempest, and a very effective start to Low Life. It's back to its dark roots, as Rob Williams says in the interview.

I also enjoyed the lead Dredd story, which is one of the best non-Wagner Dredds we've had in a while, IMO.

I haven't been thrilled by Bob the Galactic Bum, so I'm really looking forward to the start of Tank Girl.

Games / My wee Wii queries
21 April, 2008, 11:21:54 PM
Yes, I have one now. I feel like a caveman with a box of matches, so inexperienced am I, but I utterly love the tennis game on Wii Sports and I can't wait to get more stuff.

As I'm stuck at work with no chance to play it until tomorrow night, I thought I'd say hi to the other Wii people here and tap into the hive mind with my idiotic questions.

I know this is the best place on the web and you'll all be patient with me.

1) How do you play online? I've never done this with any gaming, ever. I take it I need to buy some other kit? Please forgive the stupidity of the question! I haven't read much of the instruction manual yet.

2) Can anyone recommend any decent entry-level games? I need something I can play while a two-year-old is in the room, so Resident Evil-style stuff might be a bad idea.
Does anyone have Mario Kart? I still have an old SNES set up in the spare room and maintain it is the best computer game ever created. Is it worth getting for the Wii?

3) Where should I go to buy games? Any tips on the cheapest place would be appreciated.

4) Finally, can I assume a British Wii is specific to the UK or Europe? I'm off to the States and Canada soon and thought about getting games (cheaper) over there. I bet Nintendo have that covered, though.

Thanks, in advance, for your help, folks!

Off Topic / Web-fu help - numbers and Christ
30 March, 2008, 11:36:10 PM
Can anyone point me to a website which would tell me how many days it has been - yes, days - since Christ was crucified?

An odd request, I know, but someone asked me and it's annoying me now.

I've had a go with Google but my web-fu has failed me.

I found this via the great comic cover homages link on the Ultimate Link Thread, but I think this one deserves a thread of its own.

Apparently, I'm most suited to date the Scarlet Witch. I'm a bit disappointed, as I prefer DC to Marvel and was hoping for Power Girl.

Anyway, lots of fun! Please post your top date here!
