Prog / Re: Prog 2004: Road Dogs!

Still enjoying three out of five.

Rogue Trooper is the best of the bunch, and IMO the best Rogue strip since Cinnabar. The character work on TG is exemplary writing, and PJ is clearly having a great time. Love that opening page.

Savage, though light on original text, is still tremendously sinister. The art makes this great, and the tone of the storytelling is spot on.

Strong Dredd strip, too. I feel happy that Henry Flint exists in a world that just lost Steve Dillon.

My attention span may have locked me out of the other two strips. My fault for reading the prog after a busy night at work. I'll try to get back to them sometime, especially Counterfeit Girl, because I've enjoyed other work by these crazy creators.

I remember cola-flavoured ET biscuits!

I also really want a Breakaway, and several others mentioned here. This is going to cost me a fortune in the British store.

When I was 15, I won a competition in 2000 AD. It was that one where you had to apply to be a judge. I was a runner-up.

But I never got the prize, due to some sort of admin error. Months later my mum, who was acutely aware of how much it meant to me to have some small contact with this comic, rang them up and asked what had happened. They apologised, and said they'd send a book with "something extra" in it.

When it arrived, it was a Rogue Trooper book. One of the Titan ones, collecting The Hit. Because he'd been in the office visiting, they'd had Steve Dillon sign it. He wrote "cheers and stuff". I cannot begin to express how much that little thing meant to me at a difficult time in my life.

I loved Steve Dillon's art, then and now, and from the very first panel I saw. I can't believe what has happened. I never met the man, but I'm grieving.

Thanks, Steve, for everything. Cheers and stuff.

I don't really like Star Wars, but my son, who is nearly seven, is obsessed with it. Thus makes me very proud. Similarly, my daughter has an intense Harry Potter interest. She's 10, and an utter gem. She also likes early Robohunter.

My two little geeks make me proud.

My brief comments: excellent Rogue, great Savage and good Dredd. The others aren't my thing.

But i think i recall a post rest a while back...even so....need to chat more!
I wouldn't worry about it. I'm pushing on for 9K in a similar period and I'd be amazed of more than 5% had any meaningful content.

While my words ooze wisdom and intelligence.

Don't worry, Auxlen. We're happy to have you. I recognized your name and I don't know who half of these new people are.  :D

(And ads only pay off when you sell them in sufficient volume to meet the cost of sales staff, plus a profit. Otherwise, just rely on other revenue.)

I'm loving that Traitor General story. He has motivation! Wow! My favourite thing in the prog.

Also Savage keeps my attention, partly because I like this sort of b&w line art, and partly because, like the soundtrack, it's sinister.

I was a bit puzzled by the Dredd story (why does a cloak make a uniformed judge undercover, when they all wear outfits designed to anonymise them?) but I'm going with the flow. General applause for keeping these plot threads running through several stories.

You know what works? Useful stuff. There's only so much shelf-space in the world, so I've kind of lost what little interest I had in statues and the like.

But I do love my Judge Death cushion, and my Dalek salt and Tardis pepper. Fun items that geek up a house, just a little, while serving another purpose.

Food for thought?

Hmmm. I think somebody needs to lay that on top of a real map. Please?

Because I'm wondering if Toronto is The Pit...

I kind of wished we'd had a continuation of Garth Ennis' Virgin Comics series.

Me too. This was really good.

I just binged my way to the end of Luke Cage. Supercool stuff.

It had some silly moments (
acid bath surgery and the weirdly lucky celebrity encounter
spring to mind), but they were pretty minor. The whole thing was a treat, especially the way the
"discredited superhero hunted by the police" trope (Spider-man: threat or menace?)
was folded into commentary about the way African-Americans are treated by law enforcement.

And the music was amazing.

I can't wait to see Cage again.
